REDUCING A COMMON MANGO SPOILAGE IN WESTERN TANZANIA
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
we are still a small scale enterprise, but for the last two years we have been buying and selling raw mangoes from farmers to middlemen and also to direct users, currently the middlemen are the one who can afford to transfer lager volumes of mangoes to other places, therefore this middlemen have been reducing our profit and also farmer's profit due to lack of enough capital, throughout all that, as an enterprise we have managed to provide a reliable market to a few number of farmer and we have at least increased our income and the income of few farmers, some few farmers have managed to buy bicycles for their uses. If we will manage to expand this project many farmers will have increased income hence regional and national economy will be improved. This project will also help in environmental conservation, as in this days mango trees have been cut down for the purpose of getting firewood and charcoal for cooking, this happens due to the fact that there is less profit on having mango trees to farmers as there is no market of mangoes, this project will provide the market to the farmers, then it will give profit to farmers, hence no mango tree will be cut down, and more mango trees is planned to be planted, we are sure this project will help on environmental conservation. Also during the mango season, as mangoes are so many, spoiled everywhere in the community, results into diseases outbreak i.e. diarrhea,This results into a sound numbers deaths, this project will result into the end of diarrhea caused by spoilage in western Tanzania,as spoilage will be reduced and most of the mangoes will reach the consumers, The project will also ensure the availability of vitamin A throughout the year,as mango is a good source of vitamin A,
Sustainability and future plans
This idea addresses to help small holder farmers to monitor their mango trees from flowering stage, this is by managing mango flowers to avoid excessive falling of mango flowers, extension services will be provided to the formed small groups of farmers, also insecticides will be provided to the small groups to apply to their mango trees with the promise to buy their mango and compensate the cost of pesticides from their mangoes From this plan we are sure to control the quality of mangoes produced and we will increase the production, also the number of mango trees is large enough to make us confident, currently at least every household owns a minimum of five mango tree, and as the team of the project are the natives of western Tanzania, therefore we are used to our environment and we have decided to stand together against this problem, currently our source of finance is just from our own pocket,we have received no support from any institution or government, thou the problem is worth to announce, we have accessed the problem and as local champions we have decided to face it confidently, we are currently buying and selling, but when we will get the machine we will expand the project and start processing by drying the mango into dried mango slices in the first place, and our vision is to have a larger processing industry producing mango juice and other possible products, we will be linking our product to all cities in the country and the international market, we will occupy a larger share of employment and hence reduce unemployment, we are confident with our plans due to our development plans of planting new mango trees, monitoring flowers, controlling pro-spoilage of the fruit and the good number of mango tree currently available.
