Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development

Mama Africa Foundation Trust (MAFT) has conducted an assessment and noted the following impacts of the social enterprise; Reduced cases of school absenteeism and dropouts among adolescents school going girls due to poor menstrual hygiene management. The washable pads has a life span of up to five years. This also reduces and addresses the challenge of waste management services and landfills as compared to disposable sanitary pads which also contain chemicals and are not biodegradable hence, polluting the environment, contrary to the washable pads which are made of cloth and are environmental friendly.  Through awareness campaigns, there have been reduced cases of child marriages and obstetric fistula and maternal deaths among the young women who get married early after dropping out from school. In addition the impact to sustainable development is that zero new HIV infections are reduced since the girls are encouraged to delay their sexual debut. Many girls who dropped out of school are encouraged to go back to school by targeting parents who have responded positively and are more careful how they treat a girl child for instance in cases of financial challenges as in the past a girl child was never preferred over a boy to go to school at the expense of the boy. Many communities are responding positively to (menstruate green Campain) by accepting the switch from disposable sanitary pads to reusable sanitary products so to protect the environment. We have trained Traditional and religious leaders, Mother groups,to education their communities on the need and why we should protect the environment through reusable sanitary towels and diapers. we have identified 300 marginalized girls across the country who are the beneficiaries of the Dignity project, our goal is to be able to reach out to 500,000 Marginalized girls a year and 5,000,00 women in a year nationalwide

Sustainability and future plans

Your profile as an entrepreneur

Natasha Annie Tonthola is a 29 year old Malawian innovator & Activist been nominated and shortlisted as one of the five finalists in the youth Activist category, because of her efforts to liberate a girl child and protecting the environment through her dignite project which she has been implementing since 2012, by the Nelson Mandela &Graca Machel Civicus Award for piloting and implementing a project to design, manufacture and freely distribute sanitary pads to girls to keep them in school hence fighting early and child marriages. She was motivated by the fact that there are approximately over 4 million school going girls between the ages of 6 20 in Malawi. Of these, 40% do not go to school for one week per month while they are menstruating, which is 3 months in a year, and this makes them fall behind in class and sometimes even drop out of school altogether. The reason for this is that they have no means to acquire sanitary wear. She holds a diploma in HIV/AIDS and Nutrition, a Diploma in Community Development, a diploma in Fashion designing, diploma in cosmetology, a certificate in HIV Testing & and Counseling (HTC)  and a certificate in T.V presentation. 2013 Natasha was elected good will ambassador for Kachere Rehabilitation Center, a national framework which supports and cares for people living with physical disabilities because of her efforts which advocates for inclusiveness and equal rights. 2013 to currently Natasha campaigns for girl rights; she conducted 80 Primary school outreach programmes to sensitive girls against early marriages, school dropout, drug and substance abuse, how to cope with adolescent age, career talks  and HIV /AIDS. In this activity she involved the traditional leaders, parents and teachers. Eighty thousand girls were reached. 2012 to currently Natasha is implementing a project to keep girls in school, she designed underwear and reusable ,

Please read this BBC article if you haven't done so already. Natasha's story is amazing and humbling. In the 21st century, no girl should have to stay away from school because of her period. I hope that Natasha will receive the support that her fantastic initiative deserves.

GREAT PROJECT
they say if u educate a girl u have educated the entire community..over 62 million girls across the globe are not in school and most of them are victims of child bribes.

let girls learn is a great initiative which firs lady Michelle Obama is championing.
PROJECT DIGNITY is doing the same and most importantly the project fights climate change
game changer.

August 31, 2016 15:57

THIS IS SUCH A GREAT INNOVATION
i remember what struggle i went through during this time in my life..
i eventually dropped out of school because my parents could not afford fees and sanitary wear for me
they got me married, to an older man who was three times my age...this was child marriage and i was exploited in every angle.

keeping girls in school is the most important thing to do if we must achieve gender equality, equal opportunities and 50/50 campaign..this project will promote just that... i'am a victim and survivor
let girls learn

This is a great project Natasha, you are a model to fellow women, u did not just design the Reusable washable Diapers and Reusable Napkins.
you are using this wonderful Eco-friendly products to liberate a girl child especially in Education..but while the project is doing all this it is also protecting our Environment from disposable sanitary products that are polluting the environment due to harmful chemicals found in them like Dioxin..these products do not biodegrade while Natasha's products are biodegradable

we have the alternatives now ladies lets bleed green and raise our babies green
this project is a game changer for sure!

August 28, 2016 02:39

I AGREE
with my fellow friends this is a great project, girls do lag behind because of school absenteeism, eventually they drop out of school, Menstruation and lack of appropriate sanitary wear is a key reason why most girls dropout of school in in the sub-Saharan region.

if we have to win this battle..we have to make sure we fill all the barriers that makes a girl child to drop out of school. this project is great because it will help raise awareness and involve boys and men in breaking the silence, taboos and myths surrounding menstruation.

the project being promoted at a Regional level will educate millions of girls and also promote Environmental sustainability as Natasha's innovations are Biodegradable and Eco-friendly.

Game changer

The fact that you are a woman , and you come up with these two innovations ,AMAZES me

you will need all the support to market your products on a very higher scale and i know that the challenge you will have will be Financial support, this is a major problem that we are facing in Africa, great ideas an project don't go far because of luck of financial muscle

it will be a pity if this great project wont go beyond borders. i see potential in this project.
its really a break through to our environmental sustainability in as far as fighting climate change is concerned and promoting gender equality.

the projects tackles almost all the 17 Sustainable Development Goals 2030

Menstruation is one of the hidden factors that gets Marginalized girls in problems globally. Because of the taboos and myths surrounding it it's never discussed
when girls drop out of school they get sexually exploited
victims of child and early marriages
they become at risk of sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS.and more... This project replicated it will help protect, educate our girls. but the most important thing is the BLEEDING GREEN. Our environment will be protected if this project can be supported and reach out to million of women and girls

Dear Tasha, I hope you win. You inspire me and thousands more. This project truly resonates with me. I know exactly what it feels to be a girl and without proper sanitary pads. You are scared to stand up knowing your school uniform has been stained with blood. Total embarrassment and undignified. I am glad you project aims to relieve the girls from this shame they live with every month. We all know having periods is a natural process so should not shame any girl. I am glad again you are giving these girls their confidence back that this is normal lets maintain dignity. Thank you and wish you all the luck in this world. LMM

Hi, I like your action on adolescent sexual and reproductive health campaign, especially as you think toward real product, beyond advocacy talk.

I want to suggest, if possible for you to recruit some of the older (15-19 year) adolescents girls and boy to volunteer in the production of the reusable sanitary product. at least after closing hour from school they can help out and earn a living.
this strategy can reduce your program cost and reshape your hybrid business model.

This is a great initiative, i know gals from rural areas who have dropped out of school due to lack of sanitary wear.

This is a hidden factor as talks surrounding menstruation is considered as a taboo. so girls become Victims and silence

It is a hidden fact but most girls are dropping out of school due to lack of sanitary pads.
It is also environmental friendly....

Natasha your doing great, keeping girls in school ,its amazing am proud of you .

June 2, 2016 15:12

Wow.. Natasha we seem to share similarities been in the sanitary industry. I love what you are doing and hope to learn more about it. No company does that in Nigeria.., Eteicon through partnerships with you can explore this Market Segment (Young Girls and Adolescents) also for low income families which make up about 70% of the over 160 Million Nigerian Population.
Good luck to you dearie in the competition cheers.
