Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development

The Kinshaga Food Products and Companies is a spinoff company under SUGECO with five months but has managed to develop five products; (1) Dried Pineapple Rings and the branding product, (2) Dried Pineapple Chunks (3) Pineapple Biscuits (4) Atta Pineapple Biscuits and (5) Pineapple Brown Breads. This steps make the company among the list of small health snacks providers in Morogoro and nearby regions such as Dar-es Salaam and Dodoma as well as in Arusha and Kilimanjaro. This is due to the fact that there is no any chemical and/or preservative applied to any product, that leads to improving nutritional statuses hence good health and zero hunger. Apart from that, company is focusing to be the leading company in providing employment opportunities to graduates, youth and women in the region. Though it has provided 2 chances up to now and contracted a pack designer for the company when needed. This to one way or another reduce poverty. Modern Pineapple Organic training to be proved to local farmer will increase yields that will automatically facilitate trading activities hence economic growth as well as industrial development. This will go part and parcel with drip irrigation in greenhouse farming which will reduce the clearing of land for farm fields the thing that will help them as farmers to copy with climatic condition as well as reducing impacts to climatic distortion. This will have addressed to several sustainable development goals.

Sustainability and future plans

Kinshaga Food Products and Companies for a meantime is under proprietorship kind of business but strategically is looking up for business partners who will fit to the organization and foster the achievement of company's vision and mission. The company is financed by the founder and is still nurtured by SUGECO as an incubator in terms of production facilities but the plans is to get a place where a company will stand by itself and seek loan from financial institutions to run the activities. The company is planning to open more branches to close farmers areas to ensure easy availability of raw materials and also reduce some of costs to easy production activities and also provide employment opportunities to various places in Tanzania especially to rural areas.

Your profile as an entrepreneur

My name is Elia Wiston Kinshaga, a Tanzanian young man born on 16/01/1989 at Musoma in Mara. In 1992 my father died which lead to shift to Kilimanjaro. I started my Primary Education in 1998-2004 at Kilimanjaro Primary School, Secondary education in 2004-2008 at Kiboriloni Secondary School, in 2009-2011 for Advanced Secondary Education at Majengo Secondary School all in Moshi Municipality. I joined my first degree at Sokoine University of Agriculture from 2011-2014 whereby had been pursuing the Bachelor Degree of Rural Development. In July 2012 during the first year's holiday, I started to volunteer at fruits and vegetable processing project called SOLARTUNDA project which was under the University (Sokoine University of Agriculture). While volunteering at the project, I got the chance to be included to the project's program to train in entrepreneurship skills and development. After the training I started to sell some of the project's processed products and there is where my passion to engage in entrepreneurship began. The entrepreneurship skills I acquired made me stop selling project's products due to time management and start cooking and selling food at my own bedding room (I rented a room off campus during my undergraduate). The project went well and I expanded and opened a local wooden restaurant at our street and continued to offer food services to students and other street dwellers and I ran the project till I completed my undergraduate. In August 2014, I volunteered at SOLARTUNDA project and learned a lot on how to become a good and great processor in future as my career. In July 2015 I came up with an idea to engage in pineapple processing and in order to become much aware about business I joined Masters of Business administration by November 2015 and while studying I started the firm by January 2016.

June 29, 2016 19:43

Hello Tisa, its real Tanzania has many places that grow pineapples like Geita, Kagera, Kigoma, Morogoro, Njombe and Pwani-Bagamoyo to mention only few. The great challenge is to get the raw material throughout the year as we all know many pineapple growers in our country depend on seasons. So that is a great challenge. We hope to copy with that after few years to come by start the training program that will enable the availability of pineapples throughout the year for our factory.

June 27, 2016 16:20

Elia what is your next stage?

June 27, 2016 16:16

Thanks for a nice question Yohana. For a mean time we purchase our pineapples from Solartunda Project under Sokoine University of Agriculture, but for precautions, have started to monitor two farms in Geita where they have organic pineapples too. So its out hope that by next year we will be able to monitor two farms of about 5 acres each. This will enable us as a small company to get more than 30,000 raw pineapples as 1 acre gives out at least 1,000 raw pineapples.

Yohana Chilunda

June 27, 2016 13:39

Elia at this initial stage of your company how do you ensure the raw materials that you use from local farmers are of high quality to meet the desirable food standards which you aim at?
