Beekeeping demonstration project
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
One longstroch bee hive produces an average of 50-55kg of honey per year with only few inputs required after establishment.in Tanzania one kg of honey costs 2.28 USD.therefore 200 Longstroch hives can generates at least 25,000 USD per year(1usd=2193tshs). For this reasons beekeeping has enormous potential to increase the income of local people and hence reducing poverty. Given the projected benefits and costs only 4-5 beehives would pay for its establishment costs and more in the first year, while acquiring very little maintenance and ongoing labour required after establishment of the hives ,therefore beekeeping is an extremely cost effective agricultural activities. The project will be established on community land and a core of 60 local people will be trained fully in beekeeping and will also be supported in establishing their projects. This will ensure that the local community are given free access to a system of support and mentoring throughout the establishment of their own hives. This will have benefits in augmented income, greater daily sustenance of their families and the ability to generate substantial savings in making wax based products needed for a subsistence life style.
Sustainability and future plans
The projects will be highly evaluated and monitored weekly by the facilitators by visiting the site and looking its progress, whereby the report will be given weekly and monthly on the progress of the project. After six months of monitoring, the facilitator will asses the project .The assessment will look at financial benefits, achievements against goals and reporting, then continuing with another phase of the projects The group members of the community are determined and have the will to be trained and transfer the knowledge and skills. There is high and enough market for honey and supported by the government of Tanzania so this will ensure sustainable development of the community through beekeeping business, since the area has a conducive environment for bees to live and quite rich in water and trees for nectar collection. Therefore after the external funding expires, the project will continue funding its activities through selling of honey and propolis. From the locally income generated, the project will be able to facilitate the implementation and purchasing recording equipments such as computer, and having the buildings as the centre and make up honey and candle wax processing plant and a motor-vehicle pickups for distributing the products.
