Explain your idea in details:

Business idea is to produce, processes and formulate cheap and quality fish feed out of Duckweed (Lemna minor). Duckweed is a monocotyledon species of green floating flowering plant of the Lemnaceae family, the plant grow in different tropical climates and has high concentration of trace minerals and pigments especially xanthophylls, beta carotene, the proximate composition is crude protein 24- 45%, crude lipid 3-7%, crude fiber 5.16%, carbohydrate 14.1-43.6% , ash 12-27% by dry weight respectively, duckweed has high growth rate and can easily be produced in concrete tanks and cemented artificial ponds, the crude protein in duckweed responds to the nutrients contents of growing media up to 45%,duckweed has nutritional profile same as Soy beans and fish meal which are commonly used as a source of protein in fish feed. in one acre we can produce 30 tonnes of duckweed per year but through applying unique organic fertilizing method is anticipated to increase duckweeds growth rate from 30 tons/acre/year to 75 tons/acre /year which is enough to replace the use of soy bean and fish meal without disturbing ecosystem. we will use sensors controlled by a mobile application to measure the concentrations of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) needed to promote plant growth and maintain Nutrition content.Farming of Duckweed will take place in artificial ponds by using technology which will ensure maximum production and quality Duckweed in term of nutritional contents, then dried and processed into duckweed meal and mix with other ingredient to formulate quality fish feed which are in pellet form and floating.

Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development

1.For several decades fish meal and Soy bean meal have been used as the main source of protein in fish feeds however its expensive and competitive, protein sources alone cost 50% than other Ingredients. my idea focus on reduction in production cost by reducing the cost of fish feed by replacing soy bean and fish meal by Duckweed. duckweed is easy to produce in artificial ponds, and are harvested after five days then will be dried by sun light or drying machine, then process into duckweed powder then it will be used as protein source. In formulation of fish feed will be mixed with other ingredients like premix, cassava flour to make fish feed which will be cheap. The current price is 2200 Tanzania shilling per 1kg we expect to sale at 1650 per 1kg which is affordable,2. Reducing dependence on globally traded commodities(fish meal and soybeans meal), by 20% by June 20193. Increase in fish production due low cost of fish feed to tackle sharply declined of wild fish,Increase in per capital income to the community. 4. Food security through production of increase nutrition quality of fish flesh for human consumption -specifically increase level of mega 3 fatty acids with ant-oxidant vitamin and solve the disease associated with lack of proper nutrients to under 5 children 5. Environmental conservation because we replacing the fish meal which its availability contributed to unsustainable exploitation of natural water bodies.

Hello fellow passenger,You might have heard the famous song "What I've done" by Linkin park. The lyrics have been beautifully carved by the late singer Chester Bennington. The song covers the ways in which our so called development has helped only a handful of the upper society members, whereas people are still living in poverty. We have a great platform here which is urging super brains from around the world to come together and collaborate with their ideas and help make this world a better place to live in. You have been a part of this community and I congratulate you on your effort that you have put in.Thanks once again and all the best for the futureRegards, Team GreenSpace

Thanks Daniel The idea of using this alternative is to Lower fish farmer production cost, macrophytes can produce any animal feeds, take an example azzolla has been used to feed chicken and duck and increase number of eggs, this was done in Philippine, it my target that to produce other animal feeds using novel ingredients that are available in local environment we did a lot of trial on fish that why we are starting with fish but as our research expand we plan to produce feed for other animals, but every feed will be specified since animal need different levels of nutritional content Thank you

Hi Otaigo,Thanks for your response, that seems to be a great strategies. By the way, do you think the same ingredients can be used to produce animal feed? that could be interesting to explore.Awesome concept and wishing you great success!Daniel

August 30, 2017 09:31

Hello Daniel Thank you for your comment and question I segmented market as wholesalers are scattered all over the country, and in project area there is fish farmers Which are one of our target market, for starting we will use wholesale as our larges sales but in near future we plan to have fish feed store to the region where there is encouraging number of fish farmers in which the targeted region are already identified So our sales will focus in both, and exactly number of sales will be determined after one year of project operation. But currently the wholesale market have high demand since they supply fish feed to other region.

August 30, 2017 09:21

Hi Otaigo,I have an interesting concept and thanks for the details provided. I had comment on the customer segments you are targeting. Between fish farmers and fish feed whole sellers, which of these do you think can have substantial return on your sales? On the whole sales, does it mean you will not have your own outlets shops for your feed?Wishing you all the best!Cheers!

August 30, 2017 08:21

Dear KajolThank you for your encouraging comment, appreciated Your idea of education, it's possible to be implemented, developing prototype will help you to no what real customers want so that you can provide services that people we be willing to pay. What you suppose to do, Write down problem facing Education system you want to work on, then group the problem which resemble together, after that find the opportunity in both problems. Take an example of ICT education to the Rural area, some country like Tanzania students especially in rural areas they can not access the ICT education And this could be challenging 1. Infrastructure 2. budget 3. Lack of skilled personel All this can be problem but what If you, then what if you come up with the Idea of '' community ICT centre '' where students from different schools can meet and study ICT'' this jus example always when you have a lot problem. You want to address try to break down into simple and manageable way and try to find more than solutions do address the problem, we believe our services will be developed with end users also go to the end user for example ICT education ask students, parents, teacher if that solution, Is well if not go back improve your design and turn back and back and back until the user say okay, then you can ask willing to pay, who much consumers willing to pay and how much your willing to accept, in this case you can know what to produce with what qualityI request you to learn about '' design thinking method '' It's powerful tool that solve complex problem in innovative wayKeep In touch Wish you all the best

Hello AnitaI would like to respond on your question based on challenges during the Implementation of business idea One will be Failure to produce desired volume of alternatives Novel indigenous non conventional feed ingredients such us Duckweed (Lemna minor) as implemented in my idea, as demand our quality fish feed increase , but this Can be mitigated through trying another type of organic manure due to fact that maximum production of Novel indigenous non conventional feed ingredients such us Duckweed (Lemna minor) depends on the quality of organic manure used to fertilize water. This unique fertilizing method is anticipated to increase duckweeds growth rate from 30 tons/acre/year to 75 tons/acre /year. and also increase production capacity of raw Materials.second My business May face new entrants competitors who supply the same product but this can be mitigated through diversification of the products, like producing other animal feed using the same ingredients, flexibility in production i.e. changing the technology use and lowering the cost of production by eliminating unnecessary cost so as to sell at reasonable price, This are key challenges but all can be mitigated I am business strategist, any Challenge is an opportunity "always when I saw challenge I saw Chances to save the world" If you want to know more kindly ask keep in Touch

August 25, 2017 10:50

Hi Mr. OtaigoThanks for your good explanation,Yes I have knowledge of animal feed, am pursuing Bachelor of Veterinary medicine at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA)You made a very interesting research.Your efforts are long lasting, Congralatulation for good progressI wish you best of luck as the competition is approaching to an end.Let's share our strength and experience.Uledi Kimbavala"Zero hunger is possible"

August 25, 2017 10:35

Hello Otaigo! As your idea supports and promotes sustainable agriculture, and tends to improve the economy of the society. What are the challenges do you believe you may encounter during it's implementation?Thank you.

August 25, 2017 10:19

Dear UlediThank you for your question seems you know much about animal feed production, happy to have you here, your question basically focus on how much fish feed fish farmer can use to produce a certain number of fish and how long ? first of all will depend on farm management and type of species. Basically depend on fish farmer's targeted market or Client, if he target large scale market that need fish for processing, that means he will need fish with large size hence it will take time and huge feed, as the current practice it take 1. 48Kg of fish feed to produce 1kg of farmed tilapia or catfish. This is easy to calculate depend on the number of fingerings of fish stock farmer want. And if fish farmer focus on local market in community level such us food vendors for our fish feed it will take five-six month to make fish to attain table size at a minimum production cost."I search and develop Local appropriate solution to Local Challenge"Keep in Touch

Mr.Otaigo ElishaNow I can see how profitable is this idea, thank you for your good elaboration beyond the doubt. Now how much feed for how long must I use this feed, am saying this because of many farmers have adopted to non intensive care systems of fish production.. How is feeding regime say I have about 500 fish, how much should I buy andand for how long will the feed be consumed.I hope to hear from you.Best regards

Dear UlediThank you for your constructive comment and such technical questions, As your questions base on " Feed Conversion Ratio" (FCR) , Duckweed is alternatives Novel indigenous non conventional feed ingredients, we are not only using Duckweed (Lemna minor) I fish feed production " as i have already explained in my idea " we will mix with other ingredients to make quality fish feed, Duckweed is used only as inclusion source of protein as fish meal and soy bean meal are expensive and competitive, but from many feed trial we did using Duckweed as protein sources with inclusion of 30%, CFR seems to be in acceptable range of 1.5-2.0 so its suitable as alternative protein source for fish. CFR can vary widely on type of animal and production process, but fish are more efficient to converting feed into food for human. based on the current practice it take 1. 48Kg of fish feed to produce 1kg of farmed tilapia or catfish. This will enable fish farmers to significantly increase their profit margin while keeping their cost low. Best Luck to your "Zero Hunger Idea"

Mr.Otaigo Elisha. In this Nobel idea of yours there solutions to both scarcity of animal source protein over the growing population and to environmental conservation. My concern is how is feed consumption rate for duckweed feeds, say the farmers can buy [email protected] Tshs. I want to check how the farmer can make profit at large scale farming or at small scale. After feed consumption ratio of this feed then we can maximize the profit by increase the level of production. Without exactly undergrounding consumption I failed to get the cost of fish after using your product from seedlings to harvesting of fish.I have gone through your idea line by line and discovered that you're the one the World was waiting to Go green.I hope to hear from you.Best of luck.Uledi Kimbavala"Zero hunger is possible"

Hello GerlThank you for your Comment and question The environmental impact assessment will be dealt before the commencement of the project. The measures related to environmental conservation will be observed. In establishing the project the environmental aspect will be considered. Bio-security is the term used to describe as an overall strategy or succession of measures employed to exclude infectious diseases from a production site. A comprehensive bio-security program will be consideredThank you

August 23, 2017 07:51

Dear KerlThank you for your questionThe fish farmer was depending on unsustainable fish feed and some time make feed by themselves which is low quality and limit the growth rate of fish and use a lot of fish feed while no increase in weight and reduce their turnover but after did research on problem facing fish farming in Tanzania through using design thinking method what is behind the research is high cost of fish feed ,limited availability of quality fish feed from this point we know exactly what fish farmer and fish feed wholesalers need because we have started with the end user of our product and the good news is farmer know exactly what they need and some agree to start fish feed trial on their farm but also we will advertise our product through social media.also after introducing our product we will prepare sensitization seminar were fish farmers, investors and extension officers will be invited this is to disseminate information and advertise our product.

Dear Anita MbahThank you for your comment and questionThe first line of my business will be production of low cost and quality fish feed, in future we plan to have fish farming project, although our enterprise will construct and ,manage few ponds for demonstration and fish feed trials, we intend to continue to do research on different novel indigenous non-conventional feed ingredients such us Aquatic macrophytes which have a potential rich source of nutrients for aquafeed and Floating macrophytes Azolla spp. duckweeds (Lemna, Spirodela, Wolffia) and water fern Salvinia spp, the all concept is to replace the use of fish meal ad soy bean which are expensive and unsustainable. Thanks in Advance

August 15, 2017 07:42

Hello Otaigo!Your idea is a nice one as it tends to minimize the cost for already existing fish meals by making the duckweed meal with high nutrient available. I admire your drive for innovation as this will go a long way to helping farmers.Do you have in mind of starting up fishery, as part of your idea?Best to Luck!

Otaigo Elisha

August 8, 2017 13:54

Dear Katlego Sito Thank you for your Comment The major challenges facing aquaculture industry in Tanzania is the high cost of production associated with fish feeds. Protein alone represents 50% of this cost. Much research has focused on finding for replacement of fish meal partial replacement has been achieved. However no dramatic break thought has been reported and share of fish meal and fish oil used in aquaculture is increasing.. Fish meal is the major source of protein in aquaculture feeds because it is the good source of essential amino acids, fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins, However it Expensive. That why I come up with idea to lower production cost through formulation of new cost-effective feeds based on indigenous, locally produced and sustainable ingredients that can deliver health benefits to fish and, especially, farmers and local populations consuming the farmed products.

Otaigo Elisha

August 8, 2017 13:44

Hi DanielThank you for your comment and Question,My Business is for social Enterprise that means I will will be earning profit while giving something to my community especially fish farmers that why I come up with idea to lower production cost through formulation of new cost-effective feeds based on indigenous, locally produced and sustainable ingredients that can deliver health benefits to fish and, especially, farmers and local populations consuming the farmed products, This will ensure health benefit to consumers who consume the farmed fish.In term of surviving during employ cut prices to gain an industry share and profit later strategy, This is due to the fact that using novel indigenous non-conventional feed ingredients is already cost-effective,for instance to produce one Kg of Soy Bean is cost-ful than producing one Kg of Duckweed that are used as main source of protein in fish feed formulation, So the whole idea is selling fish feed at reasonable price. In my analysis I can sell one Kg of fish feed at 1650 Tanzania Shilling while the current market price is 2500-3000 Tanzania Shilling

August 8, 2017 13:16

Hi Elisha, Congratulations on your idea, its very innovative.I'm already thinking on how to get this product down here in Nigeria.I seriously would love to partner with you so as to enlarge your reach. The price of fish feed here is very high and thats the major limitation to fish farming in Nigeria.I see that your product would be highly needed here especially for its quality and cost effectiveness. Hope to hear from you soon.Kindest regards,Seth

August 7, 2017 12:40

Hi OtaigoYour idea is really interesting and you seem to have done your research very well.I salute.if you can cut the production costs, your goal of providing reasonable price will be easily reached.good luckI need your input on my idea if you can.thank you

August 7, 2017 00:47

Hi Otaigo Elisha,This is an interesting idea and worthy pursuing. The idea appears to fit well with the resource poor fish farmers willing to use the concentrates in their production.Out of interest, how is the fish market in Tanzania especially the consumers preference on the type and quality of fish? and how do you intend to survive the period when you are planning to employ cut prices to gain an industry share and profit later (by adjusting the price?) what about doing a required pricing from the beginning based on your product preferred profit margin and focus on economies of scale. All the best!

For one of the best IDEAS, this wins the category. I am really impressed to see an applicable and economic viable idea like this put in place. Its a pride to see my fellow TANZANIA trying to work hard on implementing this idea. Though I have been voting for your idea Mr. Otaigo but unfortunately the past few weeks I have been unable to access the voting box. Is this a game played to this idea or whats the implication coz I can see now you have dropped from first place?I advise you strongly to make a serious follow-up with the organizers on this problem. We believe this idea can win the category if we voters can get a fair access to the voting box. For God sake its one vote per day and still no access of the voting box, this is very discouraging. All in all wishing you all the best Mr. Otaigo.

Its a nice idea as fish is the most preferrable food and most recommeded one.2 simple comments1. Can you show source of capita (whether its a personal or you will attract some potential investors)2. How will you change consumer behavior of consuming fish especially like tilapia where consumers have perception of high level food i.e. for riches. This is to ensure more supply of fishes thus more production of duckweek as your idea states

Kombe Mtt

July 11, 2017 22:28

I\'m trying to vote for week now I haven\'t access to vote. What the problem behind this?? If is the technical issues must be solved very fast because we are in completion. All in all the aidea was very nice and applicable.

Patricia

July 11, 2017 21:29

@Louison Mbombo I am surprised that votes for some other idea are flowing-in as if the problem of voting box is not systemic to all the ideas but just some... Seriously, this impares the fairness of the competion. I wish the technical support team for this site could advise on what is going on. Otherwise to most of us it is like there is blockage of all the roads except some one or two roads. This idea used to be the leading by votes but now it is static with this vote-box not available while some other idea's votes are flowing....

July 11, 2017 16:12

Dear Patricia ,this problem it not only to the idea of Mr . Otaigo , i m facing the same problem with my voters , the bouton for vote it become rarely accessible.Voting it becomes a miracle .I m receiving feedback from the public and i m só sad

Patricia

July 11, 2017 13:07

This idea is very good, given the impact it will have to society should it be adopted. The voting button is rarely accessible!!! Even 5 days go by without the votting box being available... How can this idea win, if winning is by people voting for it?!? Kindly look into this and advise. If there is a technical challenge that causes such to voters please set it to appear on the page to advise whenever the voting box is not available. Otherwise this is a serious challenge and shortfall to this competition, that should be addressed immedeately and looked into when assessing. It makes the competion loose its fairness.

July 11, 2017 12:52

Mr. OtaigoYou have one of the best ideas are there. This will stimulate fish farmers to produce more as you have tried to solve one of the most challenges facing fish industry in the country. Big up. Though I can not vote for this idea, the voting box have disappeared for almost a week now do something about this so that we can vote. All the best

I have gone through this idea, it's real interesting to look for easy and best solution in fish feeding. I enjoy eating, but when it comes to fish aaah this is something else and recently I have been travelling around 1250km to go where I can have best fresh fish. So developing understanding in this industry maybe would serve my day. But unlucky I can't vote for this idea, I have tried all of known browesers still I have failed. I wish I had that chance, whoever has that chance please vote for it.Thanks so much Mr Otaigo, just keep going we want such kind of people who are looking to change the world.

Dear Mr. Otaigo your Critical Thinker This Idea is brilliant that aim to increase the availability of a less expensive protein source for low-income tropical fish farmers to utilize in their fish diets which it aims to increase food security in developing countries. This idea is related to social enterprise where by you will make money and farmer also will make money this win-win idea. Well done Mr.Wish you all the best

June 27, 2017 07:30

Dear Bonita and sheherThank you for Comments and view. The idea of using macrophytes like Duckweed it's economically viable and it's easy to get culture in local environment and it grows faster than other terrestrial plants and less competitive than other feed stuffs. we also use simple technology in all process the idea behind is reduce production cost which hinder development of fish farming. Thank you

June 26, 2017 16:13

All the best Mr. Ontaigo! Your idea can be a boon especially for the marginalized fish farmers not just in Tanzania, but even in other developing counties like mine. I love how this idea can make multiple impact in environment, food security, improving nutrition status, promoting local resources, ultimately contributing to achieve sustainable development goals.

June 23, 2017 19:37

June 23, 2017 08:52

Hi. BrightThank you for your inputs, the plant is not very popular solution due to the lack of information about the nutrients composition of the plant, farming techniques, the absence of marketable product from duckweed also many people consider it is invasive plant in rice paddies and water bodies, in my side i see the potentiality of duckweed as we already did research about it and trial.

Bright

June 23, 2017 08:08

I like your response seems you have more information and research on it . Actually I know one farm in Philippines they are using duckweed in fish feeding although it cost nothing I don't know why is it not very popular solution.

Otaigo Elisha

June 23, 2017 08:04

Hi BrightMany thank for your contribution to my Idea , the following are in response to your questionThe maximum capacity of duckweed production per month under optimal conditions can reach 1-2.5tons per acre but it can be doubled depends on the space and type of fertilizers used to fertilize water. The current price of fish feed made by fish meal and fish oil which are locally available in limited supply is 1.5-2USD per kg, duckweed meal is not common in my place it is a new technology but i can sell fish feed made from duckweed at a price of 1.125USD per kg, I'm sure i can win the market and make profitDuckweed has showed good results when feed to terrestrial animals such as pig, cow, chicken and duck, it has showed the increase in number of eggs to the chicken and ducks when feed duckweed meal, i see this is another great opportunity for this business of duckweed farming so it is the area to work on it and not only fish.

Bright

June 23, 2017 07:57

Hello Mr. Otaigo Brilliant idea I have a couple questions for you: You mention that you are able to up-scale production of the duckweed, would you be able to estimate your current maximum capacity per month?Do you also have an approximate cost per kilogram for the duckweed meal and how this compares to other raw materials available locally to you? Finally I notice that your image information has images of fish and pallet feed - have you also investigated terrestrial animal production as a market for the duckweed meal? Many thanks

Otaigo Elisha

June 23, 2017 05:12

Thank you again HajiCurrently where doing research on azzolla spp from single genus family azzollaceae the idea is the same to replace the use of fish meal and soy bean, we still have a lot to do with macrophytes such as algae which have high level of mega 3 fatty acid which i highly needed to human body. Also duckweed has many uses that at the time we have appropriate technology we will extract other product from Duckweed Scientists view duckweed as:A natural wastewater treatment option: This fast growing aquatic plant grows in clean or brackish water. The plant feeds on nitrogen and phosphate organic pollutants, the very stuff treatment plants remove from wastewater. An inexpensive, eco-friendly source of ethanol: Unlike corn, duckweed requires minimal human-made energy to grow and doesnt deplete the human food supply. A cleaner fuel - While duckweed-produced ethanol, like other plant-based fuels, releases some carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, the plant also absorbs CO2 as it grows. A sustainable organic direct-application fertilizer - In soil or aquaponics farming, this organic fertilizer makes the soil or water nutrient rich, transforms unhealthy soil or water, and corrects nutrient imbalances.hence the Project will support the fundamental research on feasibility and implementation of this new technology, and to explore its potential to change the living conditions of people in Tanzania.

Otaigo Elisha

June 23, 2017 05:00

Hi, Haji. thank you for your encouragement and questions will respond your inquire as follows 1. How will you ensure the availability of duckweed all over the yearYes i would like to ensure you that we can produced enough duckweed all over the year, in one acre of land we can produce 30 tonnes per year but by applying unique fertilizing method is anticipated to increase duckweeds growth rate from 30 tons/acre/year to 75 tons/acre /year, but in future as our project expand we will train youth and form groups that will be producing duckweed and sell to us but the group will be monitored with our extension officers in order to maintain the quality and volume of duckweed. 2. Did you do any Trial for Fish to know the protein content? Or quality of the feedYes we did a lot of trials it Is well known in nutritional trial which can be negatively affected by feed inadequate problems and an expected loses of experimental animals through disease / infection.Food formulation will be based on standard nutrition principle and designed to satisfy known nutrient requirement. No major feed related problem likely to require a trial to be terminated as anticipated. As always fish feed trial in fish feed trial careful designed, appropriate replication and appropriate biodiversity prescribe that complete failure of a trial is generally unlike scenario in the less intensive system. Team and its partner involve in fish feed formulation are highly experienced.

Haji

June 23, 2017 04:31

Mr. Otaigo also think other Microphytes that have high nutrition profile in order to have high range of obtain raw material for fish feed formulation. As I know duckweed has a lot unique product that are obtained from it did you plan to extract more product like ethanol or starch from duckweed? I real love this idea , which focus on social entreprize, you make money while reducing local farmer production it\'s environmental friendly, practical and implementable from my point of View.

Haji

June 23, 2017 04:13

Hi OtaigoYour brilliant folk Guy . this idea is brilliant as fish farmer encounter high cost of production due to high price of fish feed and low quality fish feed. This project is highly needed to Tanzania and even East Africa. Real see the bright future for fish farmer if this project implemented.I have two question 1. How will you ensure the availability of duckweed all over the year 2. Did you do any Trial for Fish to know the protein content? Or quality of the feedOtherwise wish you all the best

Thank you Aseel abuhamdaI love you brilliant advice, "use sensors controlled by a mobile application to measure the concentrations of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) needed to promote plant growth. And based on the results, you will know what to add more or what is in excess and needs dilution. This is to ensure optimum growing conditions" i visited the website you provided this idea will be included in my project is real and practical, you made me to think broadly on how i will maintain the quality of duckweed(Lemna minor) while increasing quantity of duckweed, Thank you Very much

Otaigo Elisha

June 20, 2017 07:38

Thank you Andeshi for you contributions and advice Its true that Due to the shortage of fish there is a new trend that fish is mainly consumed by better class of the community. However Tanzanians eat on average only 8kg of fish per year less than half the international average of 17Kg. The increasing gap in fish supply and demand in turn increases the price of fish. This significantly reduces fish consumption particularly by the poor community or society that threatens their food security. Around third of the children under five are deficiency in iron and vitamin A contributing to stunting , while about third of women between 15-49 years are deficient in iron, Vitamin A and Iodine this is real situation in the ground, in your second question was basically on productivity volume of the fish feed we will start in targeted area with high number of fish farmers and we will scale up and open fish feed store to entire fish farmers economic zones in Tanzania. Also in case of productivity volume of duckweed may failure to meet targeted volume Can be mitigated through trying another type of organic manure due to fact that maximum production of duckweed depends on the quality of organic manure used to fertilize water. This is to ensure that project is viable, profitable and implementable .

Andeshi Andeshi

June 20, 2017 05:45

This idea is brilliant. for long time we Tanzania are facing problems with nutrients because fish in the market is very expensive. Fish is defined as suitable for the rich people while the poor or marginalised people are enstranged. The successfulness of this project will contribute abundantly in lowering the price of this vital product where even the penury may affort. My concern is..how will you make these fish nutrients available to the bulk of the country including villages..because in villages most of people are vulnerable to infectious diseases as a result from food nutrients to nurture the health which contributes amazingly in stimulating economic growth.

Sorry the link is not direct. Despite copy pasting it. In the search bar type "Agritech" and read the innovation. It has more explanation on using technology to develop your idea.Best of luck!

Hey there Mr.Otaiga! A very nice and interesting idea.. I would like to help by using technology to develop your idea. For example, use sensors controlled by a mobile application to measure the concentrations of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) needed to promote plant growth. And based on the results, you will know what to add more or what is in excess and needs dilution. This is to ensure optimum growing conditions. You can read more here https://www.wamda.com/memakersge/2017/02/agritech-sprouts-lebanon Best of luck and would enjoy reading your advices to my idea ;)

Pleasure! May all entrepreneurs get this idea for better and sustainable development. However I would propose this idea to be put into two languages for the case of Tanzanian context. Generally the idea is "making profit by less costs ''.

May 15, 2017 20:00

Great idea! Keep elaborating it so as to make people aware. And Just think about the context of Tanzania, are they adapting modern fishing? . That will enable you to know your market.

Thank you all for your comments and constructive adviseI Would like to explain more on market strategy that i propose because beginning from idea is to lower fish feed price in order to tackle sharply declining fish from wild. The major challenges facing fish farming in Tanzania is the high cost of production associated with fish feeds. Protein alone represents 50% of this cost; Fish meal is the major source of protein in aquaculture feeds because it is the good source of essential amino acids, fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins but its competitive and expensive that poor local farmers can not afford even they availability of quality feed is limited also with high price so my idea basically is to replace the use of fish meal and soy bean by producing fish feed using alternative feed is cheap by compared to current fish feed price, for example in Tanzania fish feed goes up to 2000 Tanzania Shilling per kg, while by using duckweed i can produce by 1450 Tanzania Shilling this is from my estimate, that why i adopted that model although it flexible and subjected to change depending on business environment and Market to put it clearly this is social enterprise, where i ensure win-win strategy between my enterprise and fish farmers and communitybut also my Pricing strategy that also will be used to make sure we success in the market Prices of my products will be planned according to the level of incurred costs and comparing with the market price (competitors prices) as well basing into other pricing strategies that will provide profit to the business basing on customer psychology, skimming and out going rate of the product. kindly visit my page for more information about alternative feeds and get to know wanders of duckweed https://web.facebook.com/novalfishfeedingredients/?skip_nax_wizard=true&_rdc=1&_rdr this is some addition information about duckweed WHATS SO GREAT ABOUT DUCKWEEDScientists view duckweed as:A natural wastewater treatment option: This fast growing aquatic plant grows in clean or brackish water. The plant feeds on nitrogen and phosphate organic pollutants, the very stuff treatment plants remove from wastewater. The worlds greenest feedstock: Fast growing, high in protein content and dietary minerals, and easily harvested, the plant is cultivated as a feed supplement for chicken, livestock, and farmed fish, and is ideal for use in developing countries. A sustainable organic direct-application fertilizer - In soil or aquaponics farming, this organic fertilizer makes the soil or water nutrient rich, transforms unhealthy soil or water, and corrects nutrient imbalances.your advice a highly welcomed.thank you

Wow this is very interesting I'm definitely going to share your idea with fish farmers in my country. This is really innovative and I am certain your project would be profitable as you have presented a cheaper solution of the same quality. Brilliant!

April 8, 2017 22:03

Agree with everyone that this is a very well constructed project idea. I had similar thoughts that Daniel Obua Ocari. My main concern would be market preferences and how to market it but I see that you have addressed (at least in a theoretical way) that gap :)

April 8, 2017 16:10

This is an amazing idea and fits the model of social enterprise, where you are making money but at the same time giving something to the society to benefit the society. The business model is amazing and definitely it is sustainable.Amazing! Keep up the good work.

April 6, 2017 09:45

Mr. Elisha, I have read through your feedback, and Yes!-It entails the in-depth situational analysis that you are trying to address. I think the other challenge that we might be facing in general is that our "YCEC" portal does not avail us with a portion that would have otherwise enabled us to explain the "The problem statement" to our Ideas.Otherwise, Best regards!

April 5, 2017 18:18

Thank you Mr. Daniel for your Constructive advice i promise to work on it, ICT will be one of our marketing channel, also i will work on marketing strategy part as you advice in third question let me tackle the second question where my idea was originated. In recent years in Tanzania there is decrease in capture fisheries from natural water bodies due to climatic change, environmental pollution and over fishing .Due to the shortage of fish there is a new trend that fish is mainly consumed by better class of the community. However Tanzanians eat on average only 8kg of fish per year less than half the international average of 17Kg. The increasing gap in fish supply and demand in turn increases the price of fish. This significantly reduces fish consumption particularly by the poor community or society that threatens their food security. Around third of the children under five are deficiency in iron and vitamin A contributing to stunting , while about third of women between 15-49 years are deficient in iron, Vitamin A and Iodine. The current rise of fish price has resulted into booming of fish farming in many part of Tanzania. in Tanzania we have scarce of 400,000 tonnes of fish per year. in this case most of fish farmers are investing heavily in fish farming like in Arusha, Songea, Morogoro but they face the challenge of high cost of production associated with fish feed and most of fish feed are formulated by using Soy bean and fish meal which is competitive and unsustainable, the idea behind is to lower fish feed through using duckweed as alternative fish feed, duckweed meal are organically produced by using Chicken and other organic manure. So i can say the demand of fish feed in Tanzania is high, on other hand currently we are testing the use of chicken trash as source of protein if proved to do well in term of growth and weight then will be other alternative fish feed, for more information kindly visit my page https://web.facebook.com/novalfishfeedingredients/about/?tab=page_info&_rdr I sincerely thank you for your advice

April 5, 2017 14:44

Mr, Otaigo, I am grossly impressed with the value proposition that your project idea has to offer the community if Tanzania, especially those in Arusha, However, my advise to you is that would you kindly make your delivery and distribution to be more ICT based.Secondly, How will the project counter the market challenge in Tanzania, Given the fact that in Africa, many consumers of Fish, chicken, meat and pork are more inclined to consuming end products that come from organic production. For example, In Uganda, the majority population prefer to consume fish that are directly caught from Lake Victoria as opposed to "Fish Ponds"- this has stalled the penetration of artificial fish growers from penetrating the market.Thirdly, In your idea, i read through and flt like your Business model is not coming out strongly and yet, that one particular portion is key to your project sustainability.Overall, Its an absolutely great idea, great pitching.

April 1, 2017 14:25

Thank [email protected], Actually i have started feed test and it doing very well, and i have developed a full proposal for this new idea, it my hope that i will accomplish what i started no matter what, Fish farmer are suffering from high cost of production associated with fish feed my idea is to lower fish feed price and be affordable to poor local farmers, hence boost fish production,

April 1, 2017 01:44

This is going to be a nice project sir. I will just advice that as you get more insight and revelation on this idea, you should commit them to writing sir.As per the high cost of production, it is expected that a new a idea/project would suffer some losses but that should not stop you from visualising your idea sir.

March 30, 2017 05:37

I am focusing using alternative fish feed raw material called duckweed (Lemna minor) that have high Nutritional contents less competitive, easy to produce than other terrestrial plant material and available in local environment and use simple technology. The Novelity This Idea1. The idea is novel as the ingredients will be used for feed preparation are locally available and less competitive to other user2. Reduction in production cost by reducing the cost of fish feed3. Reducing dependence on globally traded commodities (fish meal , fish oil, soybeans meal, vegetable oil)4. Production of increasing nutritional quality of fish for human consumption specifically increase the levels of mega 3 fatty acid and with ant-oxidant Vitamin

March 30, 2017 05:35

The general idea become from my design thinking method, After using design thinking method i come up with three opportunity area1. How might we produce fish feed that optimize economic benefit to farmers and reduce environmental impact?2. How might we produce high quality fish feed that use alternative to manner protein and lipids to reduce terrestrial ingredients?3. How might we produce high quality fish feed that ensure high quality consumer product with correct nutritional profile?from the above opportunity area we developed the prototype that was tested to farmers, all the idea behind is searching for alternative, low cost and sustainable fish feed.

March 30, 2017 05:29

Why not replacing duckweed as alternative fish feed?Due to the increase in world population there need for high production of fish to supplement the catch from the wild and source of commercial aquaculture operation depend mainly on availability of suitable diet which provide required nutrients for optimal growth at minimum cost. the scarcity and animal protein supplements particularly fish meal has increased interest to seek alternative protein source for feeding in aquaculture.through my research on problem on fish farming the major problem is high cost of production associated with fish feed which count more than 50% of the total cost, I believe that as fish farmer get right fish feed at right time we can boost fish production and play my part in fish farming value chain as fish feed producer searching for alternative fish feed is my core mission i know next generation need something that also conserve environment.

March 30, 2017 03:47

Very interesting. My parents were catfish farmers over the last decade in Nigeria. It's a very profitable business but it requires lots of attention and investments primarily in food, ie. fish feeds. In Lagos, most fish feeds are imported from Holland and are generally quite expensive but they're also very high quality and great for the fish. Efforts like yours can bring more self-sufficiency to Indonesian fish farmers, enabling them to source food locally, thereby reducing their expenditure, raising their profits and also dropping the prices of fish on the market. Well done.
