Explain your idea in details:

The Refugee Assimilation Initiative gives focus to appropriate placement of refugees based on social, cultural, and economic considerations, as well as aiding them throughout the integration/assimilation process. Refugees internationally experience the disconnect between themselves and the native population of the country, caused by vast differences in culture. This disconnect leads to anti-refugee sentiment in many countries. Easing the experience of refugees involves locating cultural hubs in which refugees would be well suited and welcomed. Cultural hubs may include a dense population of a certain ethnic group within one part of a city, or a high percentage of a certain ethnic group within a suburb; the relocation process will also consider foster families. In order to further integrate these refugees, the initiative plans to address refugees occupational levels when determining locations. Refugees can have a positive benefit to the economy if they are located to areas which offer them job opportunities. Not all refugees are lower skilled workers. Rather, some percentage of them are higher skilled workers, relatively young, and are more well-educated, allowing them to benefit greatly to their country of migration. Along with appropriate placement, the initiative proposes a nonprofit program to ease the experience of refugees after settlement. Methods for this program include working with local governments to send volunteers to work with refugees, volunteers teaching refugees about cultural/societal norms of that country, language help, religious help, sports/recreational activities, support groups (i.e. trauma), aid centers, temporary housing, etc. This initiatives long term goal is creating an easily adoptable multifaceted refugee program, through which national governments could handle their specific refugee crises more efficiently. The hope is to create a network between government entities and NGOs.

Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development

As citizens of this world, it is our duty to assist in ensuring the safety of the innocent refugees coming from war torn countries. The Refugee Assimilation Initiative assists in providing a home for refugees where they can integrate easily and be productive members of society. The prospective outcome of the initiative is a more connected society and less anti-refugee sentiment. Specifically, Our Refugee Assimilation initiative, along with technical assistance, will research relocation areas that will be suited best for the refugees integration process. The refugees will be aided by not only our program, but also the community to which they have moved into. Additionally, through interacting with local governments, the initiative would be able to provide orientation training on a city-by-city level. The initiative seeks to have a lasting beneficial impact on the refugees of this world, especially considering the pressing issue it has grown into in the modern age. Targets organized consecutively would be the following: securing the legal documentation and authorization for a nonprofit, networking in order to interact with existing NGOs and government entities, establishing a base office to conduct operations, creating a team involved the the research and implementation of the initiative, execution, and the eventual construction of aid centers. Success would be determined through responsiveness of NGOs and government bodies, large public support, noticeable improvement in refugee productivity and mentality, and sustainable cash inflow through fundraisers, donations, etc.

Plans for implementation and sustainability

The Refugee Assimilation Initiative would operate as 501(c)(4) non profit, as it is organization not organized for profit and operated exclusively to promote social welfare. For funding, the following sources will provide money towards starting our initiative: investor funding, loans, grants, and philanthropist lending. In order to reach Syrian refugees, the program will get into contact with national governments and other NGOs. Multiple NGOs exist that address the actual relocation process, and the initiative can work with them to research appropriate homes for the refugees. Once in the country, the initiative will work with local governments to address the refugees in specific areas. To gain public recognition, fundraisers and public events will be held, in which those interested in the initiative will be engaged. Brochures and pamphlets will be given to refugees, along with seminars conducted by volunteers, in order to introduce our initiative to the refugees. Hopefully the cultural hubs which we identify will be of great assistance to the refugees, along with our aid. Services will primarily be marketed on the town/county level, as we can address refugees in a specific area, and offer more one-to-one assistance, as opposed to trying to conduct the initiative on a national level. Through working on a more regional level,  governments may eventually adopt the initiative, a more sustainable solution to the refugee crisis.

Your profile

I am very hardworking, and I would put my utmost interests into the business in order to see it succeed. Coming from an immigrant parents, I understand the difficulties involved in assimilation, and I can empathize with the struggles faced by the refugees. As a founder, I hope my affability and determination will contribute to our businesss success. Growing up in the 2000's, I have witnessed global issues through the news, and over time, I have developed my own feelings on these issues. Upon entering high school, I found Model UN, a medium through which I could debate these issues with my peers, and express my ideas. I have received multiple Best Delegate awards through Model UN, and it is something I will continue to take part in. In recent years, I began to hear more and more about the refugees crisis, and through seeing imagery and interviews, I could empathize with this population. As the 15 year old son of Indian immigrants in America, I understand the isolation that my parents experienced when arriving in America. Immigrants are burden not only with the legal documentation and economic considerations of moving to a new country, but they also must face the social shift that is required in assimilation. Growing up, I saw my parents go through this shift, whether it be through changing speech patterns or behavior. What did not change, however, was our family's connection to our roots and culture. In the US, my state, and my county, I have received recognition and awards (state semi finalists, 2nd place in a national competition, 1st place in a county-wide college competition) for the concept of this Refugee Assimilation Initiative, which demonstrates the necessity and interest in addressing the crisis in such a way as I have created.

Hello fellow passenger,

You might have heard the famous song "What I've done" by Linkin park. The lyrics have been beautifully carved by the late singer Chester Bennington. The song covers the ways in which our so called development has helped only a handful of the upper society members, whereas people are still living in poverty.

We have a great platform here which is urging super brains from around the world to come together and collaborate with their ideas and help make this world a better place to live in. You have been a part of this community and I congratulate you on your effort that you have put in.

Thanks once again and all the best for the future

Comrades,
In this fight for a sustainable future, what we need is innovation; something which is not necessarily new, but which makes us look at things from a different angle.

I believe this is one of the major motives of this community which we are a part of. Taking one step together hand in hand towards our goal is the only way we can achieve it.

So I wish you the very best in this endeavour of yours and hope to see you together in the new tomorrow

Hello,
Being a part of India's well-known Entrepreneurship Cell of the most prestigious engineering college in India, I have interacted with many startup enthusiasts, have got to know how they think and what are some qualities that set them apart from the ones who are not able to see their idea through. Reading through your idea, I have realised that your idea has that spark which can help it become a successful venture. Coupled with its aim to help the society achieve its goals sustainably, your idea can be something quite helpful for the same.

But before it's implementation, you need to do a "premortem" check on how it can fail. This would prepare you for any uncalled-for circumstances and help you prepare for them accordingly.

Lastly, I would like you to have a look at our idea, GreenSpace, and share your views about the same.

Regards,
Team GreenSpace.

I would really appreciate if you could go through my idea as well(follow this link https://www.entrepreneurship-campus.org/ideas/12/5961/comments). Our idea deals with covering an otherwise unused rooftop of a building with green plants, and using that space for a multitude of activities. Hi Aakash,

I came across this job site from the Phlippines which does assessments for certain skills: https://www.kalibrr.com/online-assessments. Perhaps you could consider that as one way for providing evidence of job skills. Of course it can't cover high-level professional skills but it could be a start.

Hope that helps!

April 23, 2017 00:57

Hi Aakash,

I assume you are planning to implement this within your own community? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Are there any local NGOs or groups working with refugees? Would what you are doing complement their existing work?

Yes, documentation is tricky. Depending on the situation they are coming from, perhaps you could contact their former employers for references.

Just throwing out some ideas!

Cheers
Yoke

April 22, 2017 14:54

Thank you for the comment! In terms of organizations that address refugee's occupational level, one idea could be to get into contact with the UNHCR, who document the individual refugee cases. As asylum seekers, refugees can find jobs internationally, but a large part of this is whether or not a country is a signatory of the the Geneva Refugee Convention. A large portion of developed countries are signatories, however, so that hopefully is not an issue.

In terms of learnings about refugee occupational levels, one method I proposed was surveys and interaction with refugees to see what prior jobs they have held. An important obstacle I will have to consider is the fact that refugees may not have documentation to prove their job holding nor much legal papers.

April 22, 2017 01:10

Hi Aakash,

I think it's great that you are working on the integration of refugees - it's one of the most important issues of today.

I'm curious to find out which authorities and organisations you will be partnering in order to support the job placement process.

ALso, what methods will you use to assess their occupational levels? Will you be assessing their CV, for example? I imagine that they will not have their educational certificates with them.

Thanks!

Cheers
Yoke
