Production of livestock (chickens and fishes) as well as feeds for livestock
Explain your idea in details:
Chickens: it is basically buying a day old chicks from the hatchery rearing them for about 5 to 12 weeks before selling them off. The process of rearing is quite technical and sensitive, as a result adequate knowledge is required to see one through without recording huge amount of loss/casualties to the birds. Adequate knowledge about what type of feed they require at different stages, vaccines and how to administer them, what signs to look out for on possible illness and so on. For fishes we do the hatching our selves, hatching involves taking sperm from a male fish and mixing it with the egg of a female fish to fertilise the egg after 24 hours the eggs will hatch, you'll have a day old fishes.all this take place inside a jar usually referred to as the nursery while after hatching the fishes are usually transferred to an incubator. Handling or caring for a day old fishes is quite technical, more technical than handling chickens, any minor infection can result in casualties, sometimes loosing the whole fishes. The beauty of this once they are up to one month old the chances of making it to maturity is higher and unlike chickens where you need vaccines all the fishes need is just food and clean water. Producing chicken feed for sale and consumption, this process involves mixing common ingredient like maize, soya beans, wheat, fish and bone meal in certain quantity depending what category of birds you rear for example: layers i.e. birds that are reared for egg production alone need to consume feeds that have more protein and bone meal so as to harden the shell of the eggs they produce. Feeds are off 3 types they are layers match, growers, starter, finisher etc.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Sustainable agriculture is the only major way of achieving food security anywhere in the world, poultry farming is very lucrative in Nigeria because there is a ban on imported poultry product which creates a deficit, according the poultry association of Nigeria president ayoola odutan local demand for frozen products is over two million metric tonnes per annum, and local farmers are only able to produce three hundred thousand metric tonnes per annum, every stage or process of rearing this chicken is sustainable, all the waste product are either bio degradable or are useful in other aspect of life... e.g. foul shit can be used as manure for plant,
Plans for implementation and sustainability
for now we only rear birds for festive seasons like Christmas, new year and easter, usually rear 200 birds or less during this period, the activities involve are feeding the birds, cleaning the pen,i.e. Removing foul shit, vaccinating as at when due, and producing the feeds, I am also planning to go into feeds production for sale.. i.e. mixing foul feeds not for my birds alone to sell to other farmers too, sometimes we also require solar powered lamp for the chicks to be able to feed during the night
I was born on February 9th 1987, I am 30 years old which makes me eligible for this competition, my mum is a farmer, it was from her I learnt everything about poultry farming, from cleaning the poultry to feeding, vaccinating, including hatching fishes and taking care of them
