Explain your idea in details:
Rahnumai believes that higher education is a right that must be available to all, regardless of their gender or socioeconomic class. It strives to address the problem of accessibility to higher education for students in remote or underprivileged areas in the form of an online platform. The main objective of this online portal is to save the time and costs students have to bear to travel to access higher education institutes in cities and save them the hassle of waiting in long lines at the bank just to gain access to submit the application fee. This is especially significant for female students who are unable to travel to other cities alone due to social barriers to their mobility. Therefore, Rahnumai aims to contribute in increasing the applicants, especially female applicants, in higher education institutes which may result in higher enrollment. Rahnumais online platform consists of three main components: (1) Online Universal Application Portal, (2) Universities Database and (3) Educational Search Engine. Students sign up to the portal by completing their basic personal and educational profiles. Once signed in, the students select the universities they want to apply to using the Universities Database and Educational Search Engine. There is no limit to the number of applications made to different universities and the portal displays deadline reminders at regular intervals. Once the student has submitted the application on our portal, we complete application process. This involves submitting a hard copy of the students application to the university on behalf of the student. We charge a service fee for this process. In order to gain traction for the online platform, Rahnumai has conducted 11 successful information sessions in 8 institutes, reaching out to more than 2500 students. We have also secured 60 student ambassadors to help us in our efforts to secure applications.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
According to Higher Education Commission (2014-2015), 1.3 million students enroll in higher studies programs every year and this is still one of the lowest enrollment ratios in the Asia region according to UNESCOs report on Higher Education (2014). This creates a huge potential for an initiative that is oriented towards increasing higher education enrolment especially for students from remote areas and females. Our target is to bridge the gap between expected higher education enrollment for the age cohort (17 to 24 years) and the current numbers. Our pilot project indicated that students were willing to enroll but the process was too difficult and there was a lack of information about the variety of universities and programs they could apply for in higher studies. This ultimately affects the diversity of workforce in Pakistan which is largely oriented towards medicine and engineering. For this project, we approached 42 students of 1 academy and catered to their 234 applications for 11 well-known universities. Out of the 42 students, 39 were enrolled in the higher studies programs indicating a success rate of 92%. We charged each applicant at PKR 400 per application and generated PKR 300,000 as the revenue and 100,000 in profit in just 2 weeks, assuring us that our business model was sustainable. The key measures that we use to measure our success are: The number of students enrolled through our program, The number of females enrolled through our program, The profit made per application cycle (to ensure sustainability of program), The diversity of programs our students applied for in universities. Initially we are focusing only on signing up students on the portal but at a later stage, we aim to get universities to register on our portal and use it as part of their official application process.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
Initially we are following a B2C model, focusing only on signing up students on the portal. At a later stage we will build up a B2B model as well which includes getting universities to register on our portal and use it officially as part of their application process. Our revenue stream will be based on the fee we charge to: 1) students for applications processing, 2) universities for applications, marketing (including social media, SEO, seminars and print media), and Web services. Apart from this, we will generate our revenue from advertisements as well. Future sources of funding include charging young professionals for a CV builder incorporated into the website. In 5 years we are aiming to become a one-stop solution for our youth. We envision ourselves as a large scale organization having more than 300 employees, facilitating youth with career counseling, having a universal application portal with an educational search engine and an online educational store. We also see ourselves expanding our application to the job market by including a CV builder. By that time we will have the Big Data to organize research and make analytics based decisions. Through this information, we will try to improve our educational structure and provide consultancy to government and non-government organizations.
