There is Off-seasonal hunger in community caused by selling all the harvests during harvesting season at low price to the middlemen traders due to dependence on single livelihood activity.This problem cause seasonal hunger,poor nutrition and poverty at a community level.I need One milling machine,One animal feed mixer and an area of about 5 hectors for store and piggery units to invest in value chain addition on maize produced at large amount around more than 10 villages at Mvomero District Morogoro region in Tanzania. OBJECTIVES: 1.ZERO HUNGER (SDG.1) To solve the Challenge of Off-seasonal hunger in my community and turn this challenge into an opportunity by ensuring food produced in particular area is circulating within the community being added its value chain.2. NO POVERTY (SDG.2) Open new opportunity and employment to young people to engage in Chicken production and pork business and diversify their livelihood activities through value chain addition on agricultural products. ACTIVITIES: 1.Buying maize especially during harvesting season at a price slightly higher than trader because am not transporting them far 2.Production,packaging and selling maize flour 3.Production, packaging and selling improved feeds for pigs and chicken Production. 20kg of maize sold for 3-4$ in July but 20kg maize flour is sold for 14-16$ in February. INNOVATION:Price set up of maize to be slightly higher than those who transport the maize to win the competition,Production of quality maize flour,proper packaging in different quantities from 5kg,10kg,15kg and 20kg bags to conquer both economic status, Improved Animal feeds to be packed in daily intake directed monthly package basing on age groups of Pigs to attract customers,Starting small but multiple quality butchers for Pork and increase advertisement with the slogan"WE CONSUME OUR OWN FARM PRODUCTS TO THEIR MAXIMUM
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The main expected impacts of my idea includes. 1.To solve Challenge of Offseasonal hunger by addition of value chain in maize produced and usually sold for low price at community level by processing them into maize flour and improved animal feeds. 2. Reduction of poverty by diversification of livelihood activities of many young people at the located area to engage in Pork Business and Chicken production and make good use of the grain's byproducts and any animal feeds available to create more employment opportunity by opening small but multiple Piggery units and butchers using improved feeds from my Milling Station.3.Open more employment opportunity and bring step forward towards industrial development in my country. 4. Solve nutritional problem especially to Children by increase in Flock size of Chicken at Community level. TARGETS: About 347562 population of people in Mvomero Ward,Masikati Ward and Hembeti Ward(Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics) with mixture of Maasai tribes who are cattle keepers hence will be great customers of maize flour,Young people engaging in maize production where low price of maize is the main challenge,more than 100 employments will be created as business goes on .Food supply to local institutions like schools, and other institutional centers around. EVALUATION OF SUCCESS: Living standard improvement of the people direct and indirect involved in the business,Number of employment created,Increase in production of Pigs,Chickens and maize and their consumption at particular area.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
BUSINESS MODEL: Financial analysis; 20kg of maize cost 3$-4$ in Harvesting season (July - August) but 20kg of mize flour cost ranges 14$-18$ during Off-season (January -April) at rural areas lets take 60kg of maize during harvesting season for only 10$ after processing can produce 40 kg of maize flour for 30$ and 20kg of un improved maize bran for 1.5 $. Net difference (30$+1.5$)-10$=21.5$ that means from 10$ to 31.5$ if you multiply the investment by 100 times measn from 1000$ to 3150$ within 5 mouths. futher expansion of investment by 1000 times means from 10,000$ to 31,500$ within 5 months,There are more indirect products, Pig and Chicken products. Fixed cost fund of 15,909$ (35 Millions Tanzanian Shillings) as Seed Capital is required for fixed assets to invest in value chain addition to make that big difference, Pigs kept only for 8 months at 90kg body weight and then slaughtered replaced by Piglets especially during Off-season to minimize cosuption per number of Pigs. The profit will be used to Open more employment like quality butchers and expand the project to cover multiple regions in the Country to make sure that maize are utilized to their maximum sweetness and food supply to the Community is constant at reasonable costs. COLLABORATORS: Professional Young people such as lawyer, an Engineer and an Accountant, Youth Organizations engaged in maize production and Chicken production within local communities,Maize producers, Government and Non government Community development Organizations,Pig producers and specialists,local institutions like school,prisons and educational centers as my costumers of maize flour,Packaging specialists,Financial institutions like banks,mobile networks and radio stations for advertisement,.Resources available includes electricity,People especially with culture of using maize flour as staple food and less restrictions to Pork and chicken products.
Am self motivated,focused and courageous enough to take part in problems solving in my community and get involved in National and international issues turning the world's challenges into opportunities by applying potential ideas invested in my generation. -Currently am a Student pursuing Bachelor degree in Veterinary Medicine (BVM) at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) third year now from October 2014 expecting to graduate 2019 -Currently am Information Officer of Tanzania Veterinary Students Association (TVSA) -Am a Co-Founder of Tanzania Institutional Economic Development Foundation (TIEDF) with the aim of motivation and mobilization of Youth to engage in value chain addition in Farm products and Revolution in the use of Technology in my community to solve Community Challenges including unemployment and Off seasonal hunger. WORKING EXPERIENCE: August 2016 to October 2016 POSITION: Project Manager at DR. Masawe's Broiler Project worth 2272 $ As specialist in feed evaluation and nutrients requrement analysis of Chicken from day 1 old chicks to 4 weeks of age,and disease control by strictly bio security approach with high efficiency of low mortality rate of 0.03% and an average weight gain of 49g/day by the second week from hatchery. I have been exposed and involved in Busness buying farm products (maize, Beans and Irish potatoes) as middlemen where I discovered a hidden Opportunity in Value chain addition in farm products at local community level.
