Explain your idea in details:
Living in a metropolis like Mumbai in India, we felt that there's a lack of places where one can spend some quality time with nature. Trees are being cut down to make way for new roads and residential projects for the unending influx of people from all over the country. Lack of time is also a major reason for such a disconnect with nature. Such a need is what prompted us to get to this idea: GreenSpace. The major objective of the plan is to rent rooftops in major cities in search of alternate areas for recreational activities which promote sustainability and let people of different age groups get what they look for. This open setting has a twofold advantage: getting the user to help preserve what they use, in turn taking a small step towards preserving the environment. This would be achieved by having regular tree plantation drives and encouraging people to bring suitable biodegradable wastes from their households to make the soil more fertile. Whatever they sow and grow, the participants would be allowed to take the produce with them. Various activities catering to people of different age groups can be held at the same venue but at different times. The day can start with a yoga/meditation session which can be converted to a classroom lent to NGOs that help underprivileged children with education. Such a natural setup would prove to be stimulating for effective learning. During the evening time, the place can be used by children during their playtime or as a reading and study space. To gather funds for the cause, some paid events such as silent movie screening, barbecue and camping can be organized. These funds could be utilized for the betterment of the venue or can be donated to the partner NGOs.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
One salient feature of this idea is that it can contribute to various sustainable development goals at once. Getting more green cover is associated with several health benefits, decreased stress levels and higher levels of physical activity. According to the world health organization, more than 7% of Indians are either depressed or have some anxiety disorder. Helping people spend time in such an environment would be beneficial for their health and help reduce healthcare costs. This space would have environmental advantages as well. The rooftops can also be used to harness various clean resources: rainwater can be harvested in cities which get ample rain, solar panels can be installed otherwise. Furthermore, tree plantation drives would help reduce pollution in big cities. The first stage of the idea was to evaluate if people connect with, and require what we aim to achieve. For this purpose, we conducted a survey. The results shed light on the discontentment that the population has with the current green cover and the amount of "nature time" they have. It is majorly the city population which agrees to this point and hence, that should be the apt target audience. This idea requires little investment to fulfill the aim of improved quality of life in cities. We would approach NGOs and big corporate houses, which can prove to be positive given the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) that they must undertake each year. The number of such agreements that we may sign in the future can be a parameter to test the success of our effort.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
This idea will let people spend time in natural surroundings, which they help build and preserve. Generally, the vacant rooftop of buildings will be used to create such an environment. This would mean better quality of life and lower healthcare costs. We conducted a survey which strengthens our belief about the need for such green spaces. According to the survey, majority of the people believe that there is a lack of green cover around them and are not able to spend ample time with nature. Hence, the target audience would be people of all ages residing in the cities and the average time spent on activities would differ according to the age. NGOs can come on board to help the underprivileged get quality education in a lively environment and create awareness among them about various environmental issues. Furthermore, these green space themed roofs will be made eco-friendly by installing solar panels and adopting rainwater harvesting techniques. Since this idea is self-sustainable, the costs involved would be minimal. The only initial requirement is the acquisition of rooftops. This could be achieved by having mutual agreements with the owners and letting them use the services for free. For any other expenses, we would be targeting NGOs and big corporates, which would probably turn in our favor as these corporates have a compulsory Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) which they must fulfill each year. Some paid events can be organized; a silent movie screening, barbecue, and camping etc. These funds could be utilized for the betterment of the venue or can be donated to the partner NGOs.
I am Ashrit Tandon, 24 years old and currently residing in Mumbai, India. From an early age, I gave academics high importance, which helped me get through to the premier engineering institute in India. This experience helped me gain exposure to various fields and opened doorways for further opportunities. I have also been involved with music since my childhood. The curiosity led me to earn a degree in Indian classical vocals and made me eager to learn various instruments. I have also been a part of International camps and conferences on sustainable development in Thailand and Indonesia. This is where I got to know about the issue of sustainability at a global level and which enthused me to do something in this direction. I am Loveleen Kaur, 24 yrs. old, working as a risk analyst in Mumbai, India. I have always excelled in academics and am an active participator of co-curricular activities such as quizzes, dancing competition etc. The biggest turning point of my life is getting selected for the analytics course of one of the premier institutions of India. The experience throughout the course gained by organizing events promoting sustainability helped me explore the potential to do something different. Hence, I decided to apply my knowledge of analytics to bring change to the society. Discussing the current state of affairs over a cup of coffee, we kept wondering about the time we used to spend with nature. We wanted to do something which would not cost much and can attract a large audience; an idea which is self-sustaining by involving the end users in its creation and preservation. Hence, this idea of Green Space struck us and we have been brainstorming ever since. Many things have been added or edited after questioning various people and their needs.
