INDOOR PYRAMID PLASTIC BOTTLE GARDEN
Explain your idea in details:
The main objective of this idea is to provide an all year-round provision of high quality vegetables to the local market to boost local food security. The idea is targeted towards ending hunger, achieve food security and promote sustainable agriculture (SDG2) and will serve as a means of empowering women and girls who wouldnt want to go through the stress of farming on land (SDG5). The idea involves planting in used plastic bottles within the house in a bid to control the water usage, light usage and pests. A plastic bottle shall be cut into half using a cutter while holes shall be created on the base of the bottle for easy drainage. However, before soil is poured into the bottle, small stones will be poured into the bottle to aid the drainage and ensure that water does not stay in the bottle and cause the soil to be soggy. In place of rays of Sunlight, fluorescent bulbs shall be used to lighten up the room where the plants are placed as they contain the essential light requirements of plants. Planting vegetables indoor will reduce the risk of too much rainfall disturbing the compatibility of the soil and will also protect the plants from pest that will eat off the leaves and make the product not to be attractive. Products from this indoor garden can be eaten by the producer for improved nutrition or be sold at a market for income generation. This idea will also allow for all year-round production of the vegetables.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The major targets of this project are youths (especially girls) and low-income families resident in rural and urban areas. However, the major focus shall be on the areas that lack access to land for sustainable farming. An empowerment program shall be organized for the target audience on how to have their farms close to them for efficient monitoring. The idea shall be explained to them in details and samples of existing projects shall be displayed for confirmation. The required plastic bottles, stones and soil needed for the project shall be provided by the people involved while the seeds shall be provided by the facilitator. An evaluation team shall be set up amongst the participants for the period of the project. Afterwards, the evaluation team shall conduct an interview with the participants on the impacts of the project and access whether the project has achieved its main goal or not.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
Judging by the fact that this idea is needed to meet the challenges of sustainable development, the implementation of the idea shall be within the social framework with a purpose of not just creating wealth but generating as much as possible. Expected financial source shall be mainly from funding and grants by government, individuals and NGOs that share in the vision of empowering people and making room for sustainable agriculture. The facilitators shall be collaborating with such sponsors to bring the ideas to grassroots and also ensure the widespread of the project so that there can be a sustained production across the nation as a whole.
