Farm on wheels
Explain your idea in details:
The major challenge faced by small holder farmers in rural communities is the high cost of transportation due to bad access road which increases cost and reduces profit, secondly is low yield due to wrong application of fertilizer and paying no attention to soil health. Farm On Wheels offers a distribution model that delivers proven poverty interventions such as microdosing technique, fertilizers and quality seeds directly to small holder farmers in their various rural communities . We create access and availability of these interventions, give the small holder farmers access to credit facility to enable them invest more on seeds and fertilizers to increase yield and profit. Ready market is also made available to them for their farm produce after harvest. All these FOW offer to small holder farmers that partners with us through their co-operatives . OBJECTIVES :- 1) Partner with small holders rural farmers and their co-operatives. 2) Sensitize the small holder farmers/co-operatives about the benefits of quality seeds, effective use of fertilizer and partnership with FOW , which includes a) Access and availability of quality seeds and effective use of fertilizer b) Credit facility to enable the farmer buy more seeds and fertilizers . c) training on microdosing technique by FOW team d) Free soil testing to determine soil health and improve effective use of fertilizer e) Market facilitation to maximize profit from harvest sale 3) Direct delivery with branded Farm On Wheels truck loaded with quality seeds and fertilizer which will be driven to community and village markets of the farmers. Innovative aproach:- Farm On Wheels bridges the gap between small holder rural farmers, access to finance, quality seeds and fertilizers, processing hubs, wholesalers/retailers and at the same time train them on modern farm practices which increases their farm yield and income.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
In Nigeria, each co-operative has a minimum of 15 people and each state has approximately 14,000 co-operative. Farm on wheels will partner with 250 small holder rural farmers co-operatives in the first year. This will directly impact 3750 small holder farmers to have access to fertilizers, quality seeds and microdosing training and indirectly impact 500,000 people in the first year. In 5 years, FOW will partner with 1500 co-operatives and have direct impact to 22,500 small holder farmers and indirectly impact upto 3,000,000 people. Monitoring and evaluation process:- Each farmer will be encouraged to use their previous method of agricultural practice and the seed from the previous harvest on a portion of their land, this way FOW and the farmers can measure ; 1) How well the crops are doing when compared with their previous farm practice. 2) The effectiveness of microdosing technique. 3) If there is increase in yield after increased fertilizer use and use of quality seeds when applied correctly. 4) Measure the yield increase percentage and find out if it was worth it. Farm On Wheels can also:- 1) Measure the effectiveness of our distribution model. 2) Find out where they are difficulties 3) measure farmers response to FOW services. 4) Measure the direct and indirect impact of our project . Data gathered will be used to identify areas with issues in the distribution model and ways to fix it for efficiency and maximum results. The data will also be used for future references during scaling up and replication in other locations.
