Eradicating Poverty & Unemployment via Teens Financial & Business Education
Explain your idea in details:
The idea is basically aimed at building a platform to give teenagers (Secondary school students) in Nigeria both academic and business knowledge before graduating. The major objective is to completely end unemployment and poverty in Nigeria, and contribute to sustainable development by empowering teenagers and promoting entrepreneurship and financial education. Other objectives include: 1)To exploit the sharpness of mind, enthusiasm, zeal and passion of teens for more creative and innovative solution to prevailing world challenges. 2)To build a generation of independent and highly productive youths for a better future for all. 3)To convert/transform the galloping ratio of dependency in Nigeria to an unrestricted force of goal-oriented and solution-driven entrepreneurs. 4)To redefine school and bring about a change in the mindsets of students about education; from the conventional "cram, write and pass" to a unique "learn, know and practice" system. 5)To discover and nurture young talents and abilities in students, mentor and give them unlimited opportunities to live out their dreams. 6)To promote peace and equity in the world by fostering a levelled playing ground for every teen to participate in both local and international business contests just like youths. I think it's time we shift our focus from empowering just youths to those who will eventually become youths - teenagers, not with money but KNOWLEDGE! Yes, Business and Financial Knowledge/Education! Having nurtured them in specific areas of relevance and expertise to bring about one-time solutions and put an end to the trauma unemployment and poverty have caused on youths, or else we will keep empowering a set of "somewhat frustrated youths" and may never escape the impracticable cycle of annual funds allotment to "youth empowerment" in bid to end the prevalent case of poverty in Nigeria and many other countries of the world.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
This initiative will create a country with so much confidence in the ability of its youths to salvage it from impending and current challenges (poverty and unemployment) faced. It promises to build a progressive array of competent and confident teenage entrepreneurs (especially girls) from Nigeria and other developing parts of the world. It also will create a world filled with professionals in different relevant areas of the economy with the necessary motivation to build nationally recognised communities for targeted conversation to solve national economic problems. It also promises to cause a shift in the mindsets and focus of parents and guardians from just following trends and forcing their children to study to earn a degree in "high earning careers," to allowing them focus on their "passion, purpose and ability" and transform the class room to a place of sharing knowledge and learning than of competition, so students can think less of just "being certified" to "being educated." I think my idea will have lasting impact on sustainable development as it is specifically geared towards empowering the future generation (teenagers) and to give them the necessary education, skill and resources to proffer targeted solutions to the present (ours) and future (their own) needs. This is in line with the Brundtland Commission 1987 definition of Sustainable development, stated as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." This idea can be said to be achieved when more teenagers from Nigeria begin to live out their dreams, passions and ambitions with enthusiasm, without restrictions as professionals in different careers of their choice, and when there is a rapid decline in unemployed youths(especially graduates), decrease in teenage hawkers, parents allow their children to follow their passion than just money.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The business model of a Non-for-Profit-Organisation will be adopted for this project and will have the following for sustainability: SHORT-TERM PLAN 1)Establish a vocational institute called "Talents_and_Gifts_Appreciation_and_Entrepreneurship_Development"(TAGAED) centre for training in different skills like ICT,Music,Film/photography,catering,drawing/painting,handicrafts,engineering etc and mentoring them to become professionals and build businesses therewith. This will be done by employing professionals in these different fields to teach students as "mentors" not "mere instructors" so as to "nurture them and watch them thrive over time" than "fill their heads with theories and watch them drown in confusion." 2) Open a bank account for the institution for donations from individuals, organisations and other partners. 3) Encourage parents (via awareness campaigns)to support their children's aspirations by giving them the necessary moral, financial and emotional support than impose their selfish desires on them. LONG-TERM PLAN 1) Establish a school to teach students academics alongside entrepreneurship so to create a blend of the both areas. 2) Introduce the study of financial intelligence/Motivational books as necessary literatures for all students and include entrepreneurial knowledge and practice as prerequisite subjects/courses for graduation in schools. 3) Students will pay tuition and we open a bank account tagged "Business Funds" for each student where a certain percentage(say 5% of the total tuition)will be deposited, accumulated and handed over to graduating students as start-up capital for their respective "trained fields of expertise". 4)We will establish a system to replace the conventional "Maths competitions" with "targeted brainstorming and idea sharing sessions" for students to build sharper minds for more innovations, creativity and inventions that could transform the modern times. 5)Launch a website for the institution to accommodate feedbacks and testimonies from alumni to encourage newbies. I'm looking forward to collaborating with likeminded individuals and investors, and organizations such as Commercial Banks in Nigeria, Ministries of Education, UNESCO and organizations that supports establishment of NGOs for sponsorships, partnerships &other financial assistance.
Thomas Seth Anohwonom holds an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and has an unpublished book to his name, You too can Excel, which is targetted towards raising inspired academic gaints. His long term goal is to lead and coordinate a social enterprise focusing on teens empowerment and mentoring for sustainable nation building and development. Through this he hopes to contribute to the socioeconomic growth of the African continent. Thomas Seth is 21 years old and from Nigeria. His idea was pulled out of his rather adventurous experience as a teen with so much passion for excellence and fulfilment, he felt so much restricted to live out his dreams and display his innate potentials, "school and its promised benefits" (good employment) was the order of the day and as a result, he couldn't achieve so much as a "skilful singer, dancer and footballer" that he was, thank God he found another path early enough. He seeks to meet the need of the thousand other youth out there with similar experiences and a million other teens who are currently restricted and so not giving their best in what they do. He hopes to make the world a happy and more dream-fulfilling place!
