School for Parents
Explain your idea in details:
A family is considered to be a small part of a society, and we can easily guess a future of any country by looking at to what extend families are physically and emotionally healthy. Among others, one of the most dramatic issues in Kazakhstan is a problem of suicide, particularly child suicide, where our country is in the list of first three. While working on my master thesis research I went deeper into this problem, more focusing on suicide prevention. According to the UNICEF Report on Suicide in Kazakhstan, one of the reasons of why kids decide to self-harm is a problem within a family. That is, too often parents and children lack proper communication and dialogue. Being Primary Years Program coordinator, I quite frequently come across evidence to that. We have organized School for Parents project at our school with an aim to introduce the educational program we run. After five sessions, we could see that there is a huge potential to develop it into something much more global, structural, and effective. Hence, I came up with an idea of launching School for Parent project, allowing for a specifically constructed curriculum taught in interactive and interesting way. Parent will have to attend the courses, complete internship, and defend their final project. At the internship phase, parents-participants will be working on real life issues of identified families at risk and share the knowledge with those who cannot afford attending course but would love to. At the final project phase, they will be suggesting their alternative plans to solve well-being problems locally and globally. At the end, they will be awarded a certificate of completion added to the community of parents indifferent to the actual problems, including child suicide.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Suicide is one of the biggest issues not only in Kazakhstan, but also in the world. According to the statistics, suicide becomes a reason of death more often than murder. Every 40 seconds one person in the world commits suicide. Unfortunately, there is no one exact solution to the problem. What they usually do is try to deal with consequences by working with people who has already attempted to commit suicide or has been observed self-harming. It does not work perfectly well since the problem should be considered from the root. One of the ways to do it, is to improve family well-being through quality education and creating a community of committed people joint by common goals. Since he problem of suicide is very sensitive and, in some way, restricted topic, and since there are lot of other issues in a family that worth working on, School for Parents is going further and aims to develop family institute as a whole, believing in that healthy houses are the basis for the bright future. Thus, we strive to improve the situation by providing qualitative education to parents and motivating them to take an action, be active and conscious thinkers and contributors to a better world. By developing courses curriculum, assignments, internship, and final project, graduators will be driven to make a positive change, and by creating positive climate at the school and appropriate management and communication with active students and alumni, we will make sure that the ideas and solutions from the final projects will be improved and implemented in a real life. Every entering student becomes a member of the school community forever, and will use this powerful recourse to create a platform where we will be discussing, planning, and taking actions to solve family well-being issues, including suicide.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The School for Parents unlike the project we implemented at our school will allow for tuition fee of 300 per parent. The course will last three months including a month of internship. There will also be additional fees for coffee breaks and team building activities. For the first time, we are planning to rent room within the school I work in for 160 in total for three months. Likewise, I have already made a list of the school teachers who have demonstrated high level of leadership and teaching skills during the trial period. The number of coaches will depend on number of parents registered for the course. Initially, I will be leading classes by myself, so we might need two more coaches. My wife will do all other technical and accounting support. Advertising we are going to do through social networks and the Ministry of Health and Wellbeing of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In future, we also plan to cooperate with non-government local and international organizations. We are planning to pay 50 per class having 24 classes for the whole course. So, if we have 10 students, we will receive 3 000 (-20% of taxes, so 2400). The expenditure will be as follows: Room rent 160; 2 coach salary 16 classes (I will take the rest 8 hours) X 30 = 480. Total: 640 Net profit: 2400 640 = 1760. With time, we are planning to involve more parents, teachers, and, eventually move to the separate office. We will start fundraising and might increase fees if there is a high demand among the school applicant. The core of our marketing will be a curriculum build as per the latest findings in parents education, and professional coaches able to lead classes in interactive and impressive way.
My name is Timur Boskin, I am 29, and I am Kazakh living in the capital of Kazakhstan Astana. I have graduated my bachelor in Education with honor in 2010 and completed Master Degree in 2014. My research interest include child wellbeing, student voice, and leadership. While working on my thesis I found a lot about child suicide and situation in Kazakhstan in this regard. Since then, was in ongoing search for the ways of fighting and preventing of high rate of child suicide in the country. I have been working teaching for seven years and the since 2016 I am Primary Years Program coordinator at International School of Astana. I am responsible for the implementation of international educational program. At the same time, I have experience in leading various charity and social projects locally and internationally. From the very beginning of my teaching career I have been in constant communication we parents, and become aware of the problems and challenges they come across. During one of the latest discussion after one of the seminars for parents, one mother was very pleased and at the same time very angry. She said why didnt we explain that information to a larger group of parents. What she meant is that those things shared at the seminar were so helpful, and that the information should be delivered to every parent in the country. It is that day, when I started to connect everything, and eventually came up with an idea of funding School for Parents. In the future, I am planning to devote my life or contribute to well-being through education.
