Explain your idea in details:
Education as we know is an enlightening and liberating experience for recipients; therefore, Edu-catalyst Initiative aims to be a source of impact on the educational system in Nigeria by offering vulnerable and indigent children between ages 5 and 17 the much decided opportunity to be educationally liberated and also become contributors to economic growth. Our objective is based on showing these young ones the possibility to make a better future for themselves and also actualize it. The activities of the organization will include selecting children who fall into the category we want to cater for and we will use a proposed center where the children will be taught beyond and encouraged to build an make things. Out of what they build and make, exhibitions will be made where the public can experience and also purchase. Education in Nigeria is mainly restricted to classroom learning but what we are offering will go beyond that. We will use innovative approach to learning through the use of ICT, Personalised learning, Project-based learning. This will help the children discover their potentials and gifts, develop new skills and also sharpen them. During holidays, those in their teenage years will be supported to intern in veritable organizations where they are able to enrich their experience.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
As I have mentioned, this initiative will target children between ages 5 and 17 who are vulnerable and indigent; children who are very poor and also emotionally, psychologically and physically challenged. However, in order to make sure the outcome is measurable, we will target 100 children a year across the required ages. The success of this venture will be evaluated by: How many children who enroll in the program yearly The success of exhibitions held in quality of wares on display by children and sales made The number of teenagers who get placements for internships and complete their time The quality and number of innovative products and ideas produced by beneficiaries The number of students who eventually proceed to college/university or pursue other quality endeavors.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
In order for the initiative to be effective, measurable and sustainable, the numbers of children to be admitted into the program per year will be restricted to 100 per year across ages 5 and 17. The kind of business model adopted: opportunity will be created for these children to have access to education, they will create and build things which will be exhibited where the public can see and also buy. Internship and work opportunity will also be created for them and they get paid. Our financing source will be through grants and donations, exhibition, career consulting, cafes. Our collaborators will be government, educational organizations, innovative tutors, Celebrities and Philanthropists, Non-governmental organizations etc.
My name is Oluwadamilola Balogun, the idea owner of Edu-Catalyst initiative. I am a female and 30 years of age. I was born into a family of seven children; six boys and I. After waiting 3 years to gain admission into the university, I was encouraged by my father to attend a College of Education to study an education based course to which I reluctantly agreed because I did not want to be a teacher but after completing my course 3 years later, my interest in Education as a course had soared and I went ahead to complete my degree in Education. Education for me is a passion, an opportunity to impart knowledge and impact lives positively, I see it as a chance to shape the future of young ones. Daily, I see children roaming the streets, they are hardly literate which is no fault of theirs; their Parents, Government and society has failed them and I promised myself that I will create an opportunity to do something about it and that is why I am here.
