Explain your idea in details:

Sierra Leone has lost 95% of the forest cover, since 1970. Deforestation is contributing to carbon emissions, degradation and loss of our rich bio-diversity, natural habitats and ecosystems. Deforestation is leading to increasing seasonal droughts, hot weather and loss of fresh water. Shifting rainfall patterns and torrential rains are causing flooding, erosion and humanitarian disasters. Forests are degrading to grasslands, farmlands are losing fertility. Energy poverty is the main driver of deforestation because 94% of the households use firewood charcoal for cooking. Rural youth and women farmers are the main agents of deforestation because they produce and sell the charcoal and firewood. They are also the most vulnerable to climate shocks because they entirely depend on rain fed agriculture and other natural resources for their livelihood. Assuming that 1 household burns an average tree (of about 10 years old), 94% of 1 million households in Sierra Leone burn 940 thousand trees per day, and about 343 million trees per year. Desert Water SL, a new company in renewable energy, has designed cassava-nol to help deal with deforestation together with the causes and consequences. Cassava-nol is bio-ethanol for clean cook stoves, produced from cassava cultivated on grasslands and other degraded lands by women farmers in climate vulnerable communities in Sierra Leone. DW will start-up in Sierra Leone and use organic growth to expand into the other energy poorest countries in West Africa. The rationale of the product is to build resilience and improve living standards by introducing a more efficient alternative source of energy for cooking that will compete well with charcoal and firewood. DW will support 2 thousand sustainable cassava plantations and one hundred community-based marketing agencies under contracts. The cassava plantations will be owned by rural women and youth, mainly wood cutters and charcoal burners.

Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development

The project will have important environmental, economic, social and health impact. The project will sequester 803,000 metric tons of carbon per year (and 1,606,000 metric tons in the first two years of processing,) by saving 200,000 trees that would otherwise be cut down and burnt as fuel for cooking. This carbon sequestration is calculated by multiplying the carbon sequestered by an average tropical tree per year (22 kg) by 200,000 trees (estimated that one tree as fuel, per day per household) by 730 days (or 2 years of shift from forest-based fuels to cassava-nol). Based on interviews and observations in Bo, on average, per day, a household fireplace burns 1 tree. 1,606 metric tons of carbon will be sequestered, in 2 years of the introduction of cassava-nol for cooking. This figure is expected to increase as more households will be subscribed, during growth. Consequently, the project will conserve forests, promote bio-diversity and eco-systems. The project will help climate vulnerable communities to have access to climate finance through grants, micro-finance and subsidies for the clean cook stoves. In terms of economic impact, the project will create one thousand cassava plantation businesses in the rural economy. The project will also bring health benefits by removing health-threatening pollution from kitchens and bring health benefits for women and children who spend time in the kitchens. It will also keep the pots and walls of the kitchens hygienic. This will include empowerment of one thousand female farmers and rural youth in climate vulnerable communities to build their adaptive capacity and resilience to droughts, floods and forest degradation in Sierra Leone, creating access to clean technology and energy security for one hundred thousand households, technology transfer to developing country communities, supporting sustainable economic development, reduction of poverty and the achievement of other sustainable development goals.

Your profile

Alhassan Sesay is a social worker, the founder of The Sierra Leone School Green Club (SLSGC) which is a Community Based Organization (CBO) which prioritizes, education, agriculture, protecting our environment, climate change, forest preservation and wildlife protection, he is also a farmer who works with youth in providing them job in crime prone communities. He is also a co-founder of Desert Water, a company set to produce cassava-nol as renewable energy for cooking. He was born on the 8th October 1988 to an extended family in Makeni, Northern Province. Has a Diploma in Computer Hardware Engineering, Procurement and Logistics Management, Human Resource Management, Certificate in Social Sector Leadership from the Institute for Business and Social Impact Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley, USA. He is pursuing a Degree in Public Sector Management. He was raised in a deprived and underprivileged society where poverty was visible everywhere. People in his community did not have access to basic education which brought about a vicious cycle of poverty on them. He thought about this kind of situation for a while and came out with tangible solutions in addressing the needs of such people. One thing that came up in his mind was that empowerment through skills training; education will transform lives of people in a sustainable way. His vision therefore is to see a society that can provide for its own needs in a sustainable way thus mitigating poverty and deprivation for all people irrespective of gender, age, color, religion, tradition. A Young Africa Leadership Initiative (YALI) fellowship in Civic Leadership gave him the opportunity to better understand frameworks in social enterprise development, leading him to appreciate the role markets play in driving social change and prompted him to find sustainable solution in empowerment, poverty alleviation, and environmental sustainability amongst others.

Hello fellow passenger,

You might have heard the famous song "What I've done" by Linkin park. The lyrics have been beautifully carved by the late singer Chester Bennington. The song covers the ways in which our so called development has helped only a handful of the upper society members, whereas people are still living in poverty.

We have a great platform here which is urging super brains from around the world to come together and collaborate with their ideas and help make this world a better place to live in. You have been a part of this community and I congratulate you on your effort that you have put in.

Thanks once again and all the best for the future

Comrades,
In this fight for a sustainable future, what we need is innovation; something which is not necessarily new, but which makes us look at things from a different angle.

I believe this is one of the major motives of this community which we are a part of. Taking one step together hand in hand towards our goal is the only way we can achieve it.

So I wish you the very best in this endeavour of yours and hope to see you together in the new tomorrow

Hello,
Being a part of India's well known Entrepreneurship Cell of the most prestigious engineering college in India, I have interacted with many startup enthusiasts, have got to know how they think and what are some qualities that set them apart from the ones who are not able to see their idea through. Reading through your idea, I have realised that your idea has that spark which can help it become a successful venture. Coupled with its aim to help the society achieve its goals sustainably, your idea can be something quite helpful for the same.

But before it's implementation, you need to do a "pre-mortem" check on how it can fail. This would prepare you for any uncalled-for circumstances and help you prepare for them accordingly.

Lastly, I would like you to have a look at our idea, GreenSpace, and share your views about the same.

Wishing you the best,
Team GreenSpace.

Dear Alhassan
Affordable energy and environmental conservation has to be balanced as we are finding alternative source of energy. Congulatulation as your idea is environmental friendly
This can help even lower class families have access to sustainable energy.
Some people don't prefer biogas because of its leaky gas smelling in food how can you comment on that.
Best of luck!

Hi Alhassan Sesay
Cassava-nol is bio-ethanol for clean cook stoves, produced from cassava cultivated on grasslands and other degraded lands by women farmers. This is a very impressive idea.A community with meaningful collaboration vision opens the doors for members to learn more. Your idea will also empower women to wards financial independence.
