Women to women - beauty salons invest in improving water and sanitation conditions for rural women
Explain your idea in details:
Wells are important drinking water sources in rural Moldova. At the same time water polluting pit latrines are the main form of sanitation. Pit latrines are located in the yard at a big distance from the house, causing difficulties to elderly women to use it during the night or during the winter. Poor water quality, inadequate sanitation and hygiene conditions threaten health of women. The current project addresses indirectly the issue of water quality through the promotion of urine diverting dry toilets, which being adequately managed could be odourless and can generate compost. Promoting of simple ecological solutions based on urine diversion, that could be used indoor both during the night and during the cold winters can considerably improve the situation. The project will provide improved menstrual hygienic conditions of girls in these toilets and protect the health of elderly women. No attention is currently paid to the need of a different gender approach in sanitation due to specific conditions required by girls during menstruation period. The current project aims at establishing a marketing and promotion platform for beauty salons, for which the generated income will be used to improve sanitation conditions for the girls and elderly women as well as provide job tailored training to girls from rural communities. The beneficiaries of the project will be women from the communities of the Centre and South of Moldova (Nisporeni and Cahul district), where water issues are becoming a big concern due to the dry weather conditions and high competition over water resources for drinking and agriculture as well as the pollution coming from the use of pit latrines. Additionally, there is a general trend to use more often flash toilets in spite of the lack of wastewater treatment technologies.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The project will improve the sanitation conditions of approximately 450 school girls (3 schools), by offering better conditions for menstrual hygiene. It will also improve the health and comfort of 10 elderly women, who find difficulties to use the outdoor pit latrines during the night and in the winter. These women chosen from 3 villages of the South of Moldova will be provided with portable urine diverting toilets that could be installed indoor. Promotion of these sustainable sanitation systems prevents pollution of the well water. Donating a small portion of their revenues to the project, beauty salons will help women from rural areas since rural areas women are disadvantaged in seeking a job, because they are considered to be just housewives and there are no jobs for them there. In rural areas women do not have any employment opportunities due to the lack of jobs diversity and special training. This makes young girls to migrate in the big cities or abroad. The project will give girls from rural areas the possibility to discover new job opportunities, like those from beauty industry. A lot of girls are interested in that. However, most of the times beauty trainings are very expensive and unaffordable for people from rural area. So, that’s why this project will help women to enlarge their knowledge by providing free trainings and master classes for them. The success of the project could be measured by a satisfaction survey before and after the project intervention and also interviewing the members of the BeautyWe platform and analyzing the clients' reviews from the online platform.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The main sources of income of the project will be the following: 1) subscription fees for online platform; 2) course fees that could be paid by urban participants; 2) donations given by the beauty salons; 3) fundraising activities during the public events (philanthropy concerts and master classes). The beauty salons will be interested in the idea since they can increase the number of customers owing to an easy way of finding the salon location, working hours, services offered, client´s reviews and level of professionalism and online booking. The main distribution channels of the information are online via social media (twitter, instagram, facebook, email, specialized advertisement websites like 999.md, makler, vind cumpar schimb, environmental and women networks. The interest of beauty salons for charity comes from the assumption that most of the beauty salon´s managers are women, who can feel compassion for other women (e.g. for providing better hygienic conditions during menstrual period or providing secure and healthier sanitation conditions for elderly women. For the success of the project partnership will be made with media (radio and TV) young artists who can take part in charity concerts, as well as with local public authorities and schools for the selection of beneficiaries. The main challenges expected are: limited implication of beauty salons, an appropriate awareness raise campaign is required and the interest of beauty salons to contribute will be high if they will see the results of their charity events or contribution. Another consideration shall be also given to the online platform if they see the increase of their income from the promotion activities via online platform.
My name is Alina Andreev, I'm from Republic of Moldova and I am finishing my studies in translation at West University of Timisoara, Romania. From an early age I have been interested in participation in various projects that provide a better life for people and help them understand the importance of a sustainable and clean environment. It was an amazing experience to raise awareness among people from my country. I started to learn how sustainable systems of water and sanitation were built and how they can substitute the old and inadequate for environment ones. Elderly women and young girls are vulnerable categories, since they require improved sanitation and hygienic conditions, they also need good water quality. I am also an arts person, fond of photography, beauty and make up and my dream is also to give those women an opportunity to follow their dreams, because we have a lot of undiscovered talents in villages. As a volunteer of WiSDOM NGO, I want to be involved in as many charity and sustainable environment projects as possible. I hope to help a lot of people in becoming more aware of the sustainable lifestyle and contribute to an improvement of the well being of women from rural areas. Currently the village in Moldova are suffering from emigration and depopulation and it is important that we make efforts to reduce emigration, among the possible solutions being the supply of jobs and improvement of living conditions. Water and sanitation are the priority issues to be addressed.
