My Reproductive Health (myRH)
Explain your project in details:
Young people especially those residing in rural communities lack access to credible sexual and reproductive health information/services. Despite recent advances in the availability of family planning and reproductive health (FPRH) services in Cameroon, many rural communities are affected by low uptake of these services, thus the high rates of contraceptive discontinuation, unplanned pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and persisting high infant and maternal mortality. Yantih is leveraging low-cost technologies (SMS/IVR/USSD/web/mobile app) to build products that make reproductive healthcare better and more accessible for the underserved. Yantih is personalizing reproductive healthcare to improve outcomes for people, providers and the entire system by using innovative technologies. We have integrated a micro fund component to our platform that is built by converting subscribers recyclable plastic waste to cash. Each subscriber owns an e-account that serves as a virtual account into which the micro fund is deposited. 50% of this micro fund is reserved for their health insurance, 25% is deposited into their mobile money accounts as income while the balance 25% is used to sustain and manage the activities of the platform. Goal: To establish a platform that better serves the unmet reproductive health needs of women, men and young people in Africa. Objectives We seek to create a platform that 1. Uses mobile technologies to increase the knowledge of young people on sexual and reproductive health and rights. 2. Provide secure reproductive health and family planning related e-counseling/e-consultation services to people of reproductive age. 3. Increase access to high quality reproductive health services/products including modern contraceptive methods. 4. Build a micro fund by converting recyclable plastic wastes into cash, part of which serves as a source of income to active subscribers.
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
We believe that improved access to family planning and reproductive health services(FPRH) is an essential component of sustainable development and poverty alleviation. When women, men and young people are empowered to decide on how to time and space their families, the economic wellbeing of the community is improved. Families that have access to family planning and reproductive health services experience health benefits in addition to larger incomes, greater accumulation of wealth, and higher levels of education. We have engaged more than 30 community health workers who sensitize, promote and register new subscribers to our platform. In addition, this initiative shall contribute to country level efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) particularly SDG 1: end poverty in all its forms everywhere, SDG 3: ensure healthy life and promote well-being for all at all ages and SDG 5: achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. A successful implementation of the project will Empower young girls to stay in school and get educated Strengthen families Create healthy and productive societies Save lives Decrease maternal and infant mortality Reduce unemployment. Local authorities were understanding and allowed us to work with local communities to provide information through youth-friendly methods, in a fun, interactive way. Within three months of piloting our initiative, we already had more than 3000 active subscribers and started receiving positive feedback from authorities and parents in the communities, which allowed us to expand our work to other neighboring communities in the health district. At the pilot phase we were recognized by FHI360 who provided us with award winning UN certified reproductive health content for our subscribers.
