Project Details
Explain your project in details:
This program has among its components, issues that address health, water and sanitation, environmental awareness, tree planting with particular emphasis to multi-purpose trees and species especially fruit trees for nutrition in schools. Under this program, Gadnaplus will manage to establish 10 orchards in 10 schools in Gomoa East district with at least 50 fruit trees of different types. Also over 8,000 trees (for shades, firewood and ornamental purposes) have been planted in 16 schools around Gomoa East and in 5 communities. Environmental Awareness too has been and is being carried out in communities and schools. As such, the Fruits for Nutrition in Schools (FSS) project shall be a component under the Green Schools Program. Fruits & Shades for Schools Project Content Fruit & Shade tree planting and Environmental education Location: Gomoa East, Central Region, Ghana Target: 20 schools with an average of 850 children Each school planting at least 100 fruit trees & 100 shade trees Overall goal: To provide generations of Children and teachers with healthy nutrition options and environmental education opportunities in green compounds. Objectives ¾ To enable children to enjoy healthy diets and to create a healthy eating culture within primary schools. ¾ To pass on environment education for protection of our environment. ¾ To provide good learning environments for children Program purpose & importance of undertaking it. There are many primary and secondary schools in Gomoa East district [day, boarding or both]. Many lack good compounds suitable for studying i.e. lack shade trees. Cooking and water heating in all these schools is done using firewood which is now scarce thus experience feeding problems. As a result, there has been massive deforestation and in many schools, expenditure on firewood accounts for 20-30% of the total schools kitchen/boarding budget.

Methodology of implementation There shall be partnership involving Gadnaplus Consult and the Schools communities. The contribution of each partner will be as follows: For GPC: Project design, planning & management Supply of high quality, fast growing fruit tree seedlings Technical support and oversight on tree planting and management Training of selected schools Monitor and evaluate Produce report and accountability to funder For Schools Communities A major advantage of working with schools in terms of tree planting is that they are permanent institutions with adequate land, labor (especially children), and management capacity from head teachers and teachers. I am a proud holder of IATA/UFTAA International Travel and Tourism Consultant Diploma. Hello Godfred, I really like your idea about planting fruit trees in schools for shade and nutrition. I like that the students can directly benefit from having a nutritious food source on campus, and the trees not only provide shade areas for studying and recreational uses, but will probably provide better living environment by cleaning up air quality, and providing shelter from harsher climate elements. It is also a great opportunity to teach the children about biology, botany, environmental and nutritional sciences. My concern is whether there might be difficulty in growing and maintaining healthy fruit trees in each campus' locale, but with the right planning and efforts, this should become a tremendous project!

I think that what you have done and what you want to do is completely great! There are a lot of poor children who drop out the school just because they can't even afford to buy a meal. With your initiative, these cases will be fewer and I wish you good luck for the future.

This is good project which every one has to support because it improve environment today and pass the habit and culture to the student who possibly Carry this to the coming Generation.I suggest that for commercial trees you use the hybrid species which grow fast but for ornamental tree you take some species in semidesert area because the need less water and can tolerate dry seasons.

With this kind of project in place,most school children won't go malnourished in Ghana.And in terms of sustainable living,the children will be encouraged to plant trees/fruits in their various homes.
You got that right with your targets; school children. I think if we can get them to be aware of the need to save our environment through activities as this, we would be nearly 50% sure of sustainability of the trend. Nice job.
