Explain your project in details:

As in many developing countries, the burden of non communicable diseases is increasing rapidly in Ghana. Cancer, one of the most significant diseases is estimated at 16,600 cases occurring annually in Ghana. Crude estimates suggests that cancers are expected to continue increasing. The Ministry of Health of Ghana has developed the National Strategy on Cancer control as part of the Health Sector Medium Term Development Plan (HSMTDP) under the Ghana Shared Growth and Development Agenda (GSDA) to accelerate development attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The strategy is aimed at Prevention, Early detection, Diagnosis and treatment, Palliative care, policy and advocacy in line with the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. Inspite of attempts at implementing the strategy and employing multidisciplinary approaches to treatment, the cost of treatment, frequent travels and accomodation has marred effective treatment for most patients. The Erith community based specialty oncology pharmacies is a private initiative to support Government's effort towards cancer control in all regions of Ghana. The objectives are to: 1. Give patients prompt access to cancer medicines (oral anti-cancers) and social services at retail pharmacies that will be based in communities throughout the ten regions of Ghana 2. Enable patients have access to community based oncology Pharmacists, Pharmacy technicians and social workers who will work in collaboration with Oncologists, Nurses, Radiotherapists, Dieticians etc at the cancer centers to continually offer a multidisciplinary approach to community based care. 3. To deliver home care services to patients who may be unable to visit the pharmacies or centers. 4. To offer decent work and training of pharmacy staff in specialty care. Being the first specialty pharmacy in Ghana, the project will seek to extend as far across Africa as reachable.

Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development

The project will ensure that anti-cancers are more available and accessible to people from all walks of life. Pharmacy staff will provide counselling, dispensing and interventions which will lead to improving patients' health. This will also ease the pressure and congestion at the cancer centers and bring affordable healthcare to the doorstep of patients. Patients will be able to receive bi-weekly or monthly monitoring and refills so that patients are not burdened with high stocks of drugs they no longer need when treatment switch or adverse events occurs. Success will be measured by number of patients treated, treatment outcomes and improved lives. The number of technicians and Pharmacists trained in basic cancer care, safe handling of chemotherapy and oral chemotherapy dispensing will also be measured.

Sustainability and future plans

The project will have retail outlets in all ten regions of Ghana. The business will initially be established in the Greater Accra and Northern regions of Ghana. The business will depend on grants, awards and equity investments for initial financing. The pharmacies will then grow and progress through profits generated from services provided. In the future, the project will expand to include specialty services for other non communicable diseases such as lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis.

Your profile as an entrepreneur

I am a 29 year old Pharmacist with experience in Oncology pharmacy practice. I am a registered member of the Pharmacy Council, Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana and the International Society of Oncology Pharmacy Practitioners. In my practice as an oncology Pharmacist in a hospital setting, I encountered the hardships and challenges of patients and was motivated to start this project. I have already successfully rolled out a project which provides personal protective equipment to the staff of the cancer centers in Ghana. This initiative which was the first in Ghana has reduced occupational exposure to hazardous drugs. I believe in improving the world around me and making an impact

Hello fellow passenger,

You might have heard the famous song "What I've done" by Linkin park. The lyrics have been beautifully carved by the late singer Chester Bennington. The song covers the ways in which our so called development has helped only a handful of the upper society members, whereas people are still living in poverty.

We have a great platform here which is urging super brains from around the world to come together and collaborate with their ideas and help make this world a better place to live in. You have been a part of this community and I congratulate you on your effort that you have put in.

Thanks once again and all the best for the future

Comrades,
In this fight for a sustainable future, what we need is innovation; something which is not necessarily new, but which makes us look at things from a different angle.

I believe this is one of the major motives of this community which we are a part of. Taking one step together hand in hand towards our goal is the only way we can achieve it.

So I wish you the very best in this endeavour of yours and hope to see you together in the new tomorrow

Dear Fellow participant,

You have done well thus far. Only few people will venture relentlessly into the things in which their instincts proposes because sometimes the goal appears too crazy to achieve, so they just retreat.

Actually, someone has said that "The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do."

You may have seen this before but I want to remind you that it's true, only those who are "crazy enough" eventually get results.

Congratulations for been "crazy enough" (seeing beyond normal and following your dreams despite the odds)...

Best wishes,
Seth

Hello,
Being a part of India's well-known Entrepreneurship Cell of the most prestigious engineering college in India, I have interacted with many startup enthusiasts, have got to know how they think and what are some qualities that set them apart from the ones who are not able to see their idea through. Reading through your idea, I have realised that your idea has that spark which can help it become a successful venture. Coupled with its aim to help the society achieve its goals sustainably, your idea can be something quite helpful for the same.

But before it's implementation, you need to do a "premortem" check on how it can fail. This would prepare you for any uncalled-for circumstances and help you prepare for them accordingly.

Lastly, I would like you to have a look at our idea, GreenSpace, and share your views about the same.

Regards,
Team GreenSpace.

Asomaniwa
Thank you for the response to my previous comment, what I suggest is the efforts and priority should be on education to the community on causes of cancer in particular, some of the causes are easy to avoid but people are not very much awere, as you have just said crude research predicts the problems being bigger I think as much we put efforts to treatment let's put the same also in early diagnosis and prevention by providing mass education about cancer.
Best of luck!

In my estimation your project is well thought out, strategy for delivery is comprehensive & detailed, meets a good number of the SDGs and the inclusion of well trained professionals for the effective and efficient roll out of the project cannot be overlooked.
Indeed, this is an excellent initiative from a very young promising lady like you which is sure to save lives, render a great number of the population economically viable, will reduce poverty considerably and put beaming smiles on the faces of individuals, families, communities and the world at large.

Hello Chloe,

Thank you Chloe for your support and encouragement. Rightly said, we must support governments' efforts to support and improve lives. A passive attitude that expect governments to play santa claus cannot bring us the development we expect in our local areas. We have started ours from our corner in Ghana! I hope a lot more people join us. I wish you the very best too

Kind Regards

Dear Asomaniwaa, I really like your project because from what you say, the Ghana government has an initiative that is not reaching everyone easily. Local efforts are great ways to supplement national efforts if expertise and infrastructure can be in place. With your expertise, I believe this will be a successful venture!

Hello Cornelius,
Thank you for your comment and questions. Please see answers below:

How you anticipate to successfully implement the project:

We will work collaboratively with every member of the cancer care team: Doctors, nurses, Dietitian, radiotherapists etc. this way we will ensure that all our patients will receive seamless care from home/community.

1. Will the project involve the setting up of new health facilities in the various rural communities for the purpose of prompt access by patients or the project intends to partner existing health centers in the respective communities? yes the project involves setting up new facilities. In Ghana, we are targeting all ten regions: one facility in each starting with Greater Accra and Northern.
We are, however, open to partnerships in Africa and the world.

2. You made mention of the high cost of treatment. Is the project structured to offer subsidized cost of treatment to economically underprivileged patients as against patients who can afford treatment?
Yes. Affordability is an embedded element of accessibility of medicines. We have a cost reduction strategy in this project because as we bring medicines closer to patients, they must be able to afford it.

best,

Asomaniwaa.

Hello Uledi,

thank you very much. You have served as a great source of motivation to me and for this project. When an idea pops up in one's mind (especially one that carries a purpose such as this one), the carrier of the idea may not initially fully appreciate the impact of it. Comments and support such as yours and others we have received on the Campus and here at home in Ghana has been overwhelming and we truly appreciate. We will work hard at it until it becomes global.

Hello, I consider your project a highly laudable one as it seeks to alleviate the plight of cancer patients all over Africa.
As you seek to bring cancer treatment closer to patients in a community based approach, I kindly want your response to the following questions on how you anticipate to successfully implement the project.

1. Will the project involve the setting up of new health facilities in the various rural communities for the purpose of prompt access by patients or the project intends to partner existing health centers in the respective communities?

2. You made mention of the high cost of treatment. Is the project structured to offer subsidised cost of treatment to economically underprivileged patients as against patients who can afford treatment?

Thanks.

Hello, that is a really good idea. Cancer try to take a large place in our continent ''Africa'' . With your project children, africans, will be save in the furture years. Your project is very high and executable please just follow it carefully and don't give up. Africans are naturals, but added chemical sustances cause lot of trouble to our body and then create cancer. I am very glad to see people who try to curb that desease.

The area of cancer in medicine is a delicate one to handle. It is a good project you have started. You will encourage young pharmacists to also take on important areas in medicine like you are doing.. All the best.

Asomaniwaa has a lot of expertise in oncology and this project is going to be a success. It will touch a lot of people living with cancer and their drugs will be readily available. Kudos

August 6, 2017 18:29

Hello,

As someone who is interested in studying medicine, I found your project very interesting. I am currently working on a research project of my own where we are analyzing misdiagnosed cases and trying to understand why such cases are misdiagnosed. I think that your project will benefit from this idea too - trying to find out how and why people were misdiagnosed so that you can change your treatment!

Good initiative. Great to know that you are establishing this great initiative within the Northern Regions and Accra. The North i n particular needs more attention and I strongly believe this initiative will answer most of their calls on non communicable diseases especially cancer.

August 1, 2017 00:15

Hi Katlego,

Very sorry to hear about your relative. It is important that we can hard to drastically reduce such unfortunate situations. Yes, a licence is required to open and operate pharmacies. As a Pharmacist, I am mandated to ensure that all of our pharmacies are duely licensed by regulatory agencies and that we operate under best practices.

There are, however, a wide variety of anti-cancers so I am unable to determine who one you are referring to. Patents usually protect manufacturers and prevent others from producing and marketing the same drugs for a period of time. We will not be engaged in manufacturing and so we should be able to carry out the project. We will be on the look out nonetheless.
There are indeed a lot of patented original drugs in cancer care and this has contributed to high costs. This is why we will be closely engaginyand involving manufacturers on measures to increase affordability.
Thank you so much for your feedback and I will absolutely support you

Hi asoma
Yes indeed your project is good.someone close to me died of cancer due to lack of medication.governments need assistance to supply these kinds of medications.I don't know if I'm correct, dont someone need a licence to supply those? And again please check because I saw it on the news once that the supplier of these medications patented it across so that no one else produce or sell if not through them and their prices are quite high that is why some governments cannot supply enough.above all good luck.please do check my idea and help however you can
