Erith Community based specialty oncology pharmacy
Explain your project in details:
As in many developing countries, the burden of non communicable diseases is increasing rapidly in Ghana. Cancer, one of the most significant diseases is estimated at 16,600 cases occurring annually in Ghana. Crude estimates suggests that cancers are expected to continue increasing. The Ministry of Health of Ghana has developed the National Strategy on Cancer control as part of the Health Sector Medium Term Development Plan (HSMTDP) under the Ghana Shared Growth and Development Agenda (GSDA) to accelerate development attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The strategy is aimed at Prevention, Early detection, Diagnosis and treatment, Palliative care, policy and advocacy in line with the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. Inspite of attempts at implementing the strategy and employing multidisciplinary approaches to treatment, the cost of treatment, frequent travels and accomodation has marred effective treatment for most patients. The Erith community based specialty oncology pharmacies is a private initiative to support Government's effort towards cancer control in all regions of Ghana. The objectives are to: 1. Give patients prompt access to cancer medicines (oral anti-cancers) and social services at retail pharmacies that will be based in communities throughout the ten regions of Ghana 2. Enable patients have access to community based oncology Pharmacists, Pharmacy technicians and social workers who will work in collaboration with Oncologists, Nurses, Radiotherapists, Dieticians etc at the cancer centers to continually offer a multidisciplinary approach to community based care. 3. To deliver home care services to patients who may be unable to visit the pharmacies or centers. 4. To offer decent work and training of pharmacy staff in specialty care. Being the first specialty pharmacy in Ghana, the project will seek to extend as far across Africa as reachable.
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
The project will ensure that anti-cancers are more available and accessible to people from all walks of life. Pharmacy staff will provide counselling, dispensing and interventions which will lead to improving patients' health. This will also ease the pressure and congestion at the cancer centers and bring affordable healthcare to the doorstep of patients. Patients will be able to receive bi-weekly or monthly monitoring and refills so that patients are not burdened with high stocks of drugs they no longer need when treatment switch or adverse events occurs. Success will be measured by number of patients treated, treatment outcomes and improved lives. The number of technicians and Pharmacists trained in basic cancer care, safe handling of chemotherapy and oral chemotherapy dispensing will also be measured.
Sustainability and future plans
The project will have retail outlets in all ten regions of Ghana. The business will initially be established in the Greater Accra and Northern regions of Ghana. The business will depend on grants, awards and equity investments for initial financing. The pharmacies will then grow and progress through profits generated from services provided. In the future, the project will expand to include specialty services for other non communicable diseases such as lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis.
Your profile as an entrepreneur
I am a 29 year old Pharmacist with experience in Oncology pharmacy practice. I am a registered member of the Pharmacy Council, Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana and the International Society of Oncology Pharmacy Practitioners. In my practice as an oncology Pharmacist in a hospital setting, I encountered the hardships and challenges of patients and was motivated to start this project. I have already successfully rolled out a project which provides personal protective equipment to the staff of the cancer centers in Ghana. This initiative which was the first in Ghana has reduced occupational exposure to hazardous drugs. I believe in improving the world around me and making an impact
