Mobile application for better management of water resources at household level (MangWater)

Since decades, Jordan suffers from extreme water scarcity and became one of the poorest countries in the world in water resources. This crisis becomes worse by increasing the population through the influx of refugees from neighbouring as results of Instability in the Arab region. This situation increases the pressure on the water resources, which requires developing integrated management of these limited resources at different levels to meet the needs. Behavioural change tool is used in managing resources at household level by fostering the adoption of best management practices. As this age, digital and innovation age; smartphone applications become a main tool in daily human activities such as buying and selling, financial transactions, etc. Here, this idea will utilize mobile application as behavioural change tool for water management at household level by fostering installation of rooftop rainwater harvesting and greywater treatment and reuse system, and encouraging adopting water conservation practices. The main activities will include preparing awareness materials for the application (rainwater harvesting, greywater, water conservation practices); developing user flow diagram for design the size of rainwater harvesting tank based on (rainfall data, geographical location, and roof type) and flow diagram for estimating the quantity of greywater that can be generated based on house water consumptions; programming and coding input and output data, education materials into mobile application; testing application by users for review before start marketing and submitting at google and iPhone App store, and finally disseminating within the local communities and agencies working in this field. The innovation will allow users to manage their resources themselves, thus fostering the good behaviours in water management and enhancing the sense of ownership amongst the users, which in turn would contribute to achieving the SDG6.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
This idea will contribute to achieving the sustainable development Goal 6 (SDG6) as the following: Improve and increase access to safe and affordable drinking water resources by fostering the installation of rooftop rainwater harvesting at household level, and hence increasing the available freshwater which is estimated 28.7 Million Cubic Meters yearly according to the recent Royal scientific society study (2018).. Improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing safely treated wastewater reuse by fostering the treatment and reuse of greywater at household level especially in un-sewered areas that will lead to reducing the environmental pollution related to wastewater disposal to cesspool. Based on the Royal Scientific Society study, installing greywater system at household level in un-sewered areas in Jordan will provide 54 Million Cubic Meter/year, which contributes to 7% of the irrigation requirement and 60% of water used in toilet flushing Moreover, best management practices of water at household level i.e. installing water saving devices and reducing leakage will reduce about 35% of water consumption. Accordingly, this innovative Mobile application will lead to improving water use efficiency and local communities participation in integrated water resources management (IWRM) that would contribute to reducing the water stress at the country level. The impact of using this proposed mobile application will be measured and tracked by gauging the number of users who have installed and used the application.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The sustainability of this idea will be achieved by disseminating this application among water community-based projects and water initiatives to improve integrated water resources management that implemented by the local NGOs and international and governmental agencies. Moreover, the application will create a platform for all suppliers for rainwater harvesting cisterns and greywater units so that the user will be able to access these technologies and compare between different prices and services. This will improve the market for water technologies in Jordan and make these technologies sustainable and scalable. Being part of RSS community (the largest research-based organization in Jordan), I will leverage the RSS current and previous water projects and its national and regional network to promote and encourage adopting this application at a wider level.

I have a Master degree in Civil Engineering/ Water and Environmental Engineering. I am deeply involved in implementing studies, consultations and research in the field of water quality monitoring and assessment, integrated water resources management, water and wastewater treatment and reuse, solid waste treatment and climate change.
