TranShip, optimising sustainability, cost and efficiency in the global consumer shipping industry
Explain your idea in details:
TranShip looks to increase the overall efficiency of the shipping industry and simultaneously provide cheaper international, consumer shipping to give everyone better access to everything global industry can provide. Consumer shipping costs act as one of the largest barriers to personal international commerce and restricts the available markets of both the purchaser and the seller/manufacture. Despite this much of the available space used for shipping doesn't maximise the efficiency of that shipment. Our objective is to provide an avenue through which to replace this available space with additional packages which would otherwise take up their own containers and to provide this as a shipping option available directly to consumers. To achieve this the TranShip brand incentivises the owners of these containers to log available spaces in shipments and, through our service, this space is provided to shoppers as an alternative method of shipping at a reduced cost. As this space would otherwise be filled with unnecessary, non-recyclable packaging, by utilising this inefficiently used space we reduce the costs of this packaging on the environment and shippers whilst providing an additional revenue source to shippers and reduced shipping costs to the emptor through our service.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
To impact upon sustainable development, we target expanding our business to be included in as many aspects of the shipping industry as possible to maximise business growth and profitability, consumer savings, benefits for shippers and the overall efficiency of international commerce while simultaneously reducing the environmental impact of the industry. Shipping containers fill unused space with cheap plastics, foams and palettes which provide structure within the shipment but are ultimately unusable for more than one consecutive shipment. Instead of this, our proposal maintains this structure, protecting the shipment, whilst nullifying the need for this excess packaging which is thrown out thus polluting the oceans. In conjunction to our growth as a business, this positive environmental impact is what we strive for. We initially target quantifying approximate consumer savings, additional revenue to shipping companies and waste reduction per shipment. This would allow us to measure our viability and success in all three areas and assist us to improve where we are falling behind. It would also provide us an insight as to how effectively we are completing our mission to reimagine the shipping industry. The traditional areas of revenue and business growth also serve as areas in which to evaluate our success purely from a business standpoint in terms of sustainability and profitability. As well as this, the very concept of our business (if successful), encourages international business to target similar areas of global inefficiency, to promote a world which runs smoother, cleaner and cheaper for everyone. Our small innovation could serve as the stepping stone for many more business to come through as the leaders of the new world. Determining other industries which have made movements toward efficiency as a consequence of TranShip's ideas, act as another evaluation of TranShip's impact toward sustainable development on a global level.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
To implement our business idea, we rely on partnership with three business types to provide our service. The first are the actual freight or shipping companies who have space for us to place packages in. They would be incentivised to provide this space as it would include a small payment for the use of their space which would increase profitability, reduce costs and help them gain market share. The second group are the advertisers of our service as a shipping option. They would be sites like amazon and eBay who would like for their customers to have access to faster and cheaper shipping as it would give them a competitive edge over their competitors. Finally, we would have to work with local postal services to move the packages to and from the listed space. To start the business, we will seek accelerator-program-based funding as we are new to the industry and could use funding and advice from professionals. This funding would have to cover our setup costs; the establishment of a way to distribute our service (via online retailers and our website), establishing the above-mentioned partnerships and creating an algorithm to log and allocate listed space. We will start the business on a small scale in collaboration with local postage providers and trucking companies across the major cities in Australia. Starting small allows us to establish a foothold in the courier market allowing us to gradually widen our services and collaborate with more postal companies, growing our business to eventually encompass both international and local services. Starting on a small level enables us to maximise the effectiveness of the business through experimentation in a way that doesn't financially threaten the long-term success of the business or the owners, before growing the optimised and now well-known business, to an international enterprise.
This business idea is a collaborative effort between Rylan Sanders-Wall and Marcus Von Rausch, two 15 year old friends from Brisbane, looking to find success and meaning in the world of business. We both study at the same school and have experience in running stall level businesses as well as investment and accounting. We are both looking to pursue careers in entrepreneurship and business and have great personal interest in the area. Factors which contribute to our success are our passion for business, ability to critically and analytically think and solve problems, our willingness to participate, learn and grow from every experience and our combined affinity for learning and working together. We strive for the greatest success in every area of our lives, are ambitious to a t and are constantly looking for areas in our own lives to optimise and grow.
