MORINGA OIL AND ANIMAL FEED PRODUCTION
Explain your idea in details:
Moringa tree offers multi dimensional products that can be harvested such as oil, seed cake ,stem and leaves which can be used in various manners ie soap, feed .Our main objectives are to reduce poverty and unemployment among youth in Botswana which stood at 35.67% in 2017, to improve our local livestock productivity as regular supply of adequate and nutritious feed is vital for livestock sector growth and raise awareness on health benefits of moringa oil.We will do this by growing moringa trees and harvesting its seeds to produce high quality moringa seed oil and process the leaves to make high quality animal feed products such as moringa feed pellets and moringa leaf meal. Firstly fresh moringa seeds are harvested or brought from local suppliers and taken to our processing plant where they are sifted to remove stones, debris etc. They are sun dried to reduce the water content of the seeds by 5%. The seeds are then fed into an automatic oil press machine to produce moringa oil using cold press method. Moringa oil has yellowish colour and is used in cosmetics, perfume manufacturers as it has great power of absorbing and retaining the most fugitive odours and pharmacist industries for medical purposes. It has health benefits as it is rich in vitamin A and C,curbs the activity of free radicals, used in infant massage oil for bedtime relaxation, used in creams, lotions, balms and body lotions. During this process seed cake is produced and is taken and processed into animal feed and as it has high crude protein it has to be mixed with other energy foods like molasses. It will be processed into high quality feed pellets and compressed into animal protein lick blocks which will be sold to farmers at an affordable price.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
1.Sustainable job creation through our shared value business model, which creates employment opportunities as will involve everyone from primary producers, seedlings suppliers and distributors.2.For livestock farmers this means the chemical components of moringa plant is an excellent option as feed for cattle and small ruminants because of its high nutritional value.3. Moringa will help our environment by releasing a lot of oxygen into the atmosphere, thus reducing effects of climate change as it does not have environment hazards.Reduced feed costs for farmers compared to current convectional feeds as feed accounts to 70% of farming operational costs. Our measures of success will be measured on the following: (a) number of people employed in our processing factory, and number youths engaged in seed supplying, seedlings.(b) Number of moringa volume of oil produced from each he and bottles sold, to our respective target market including revenue generated .(c) number of packaged feed pellets produced from seed cake and moringa leaf feed meal produced and sold. percentage of weight gain by farmers livestock and number of livestock sold, and profit revenue made after introducing moringa feed to their animals. Income saved while buying moringa feeds compared to conventional feeds.Reduction in poverty, hunger and unemployment in local communities through our agricultural sustainable business model.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
As for a profit social enterprise we want to create a shared value business model which includes local members of community.Construction of low cost buildings and facilities to process raw materials .We intend to purchase seeds and leaves from local suppliers at a fair to be transported and processed at our plant. We will source and grow the MOMAX3 seeds type which produces high volume of oil. Seeds will be purchased from small holder farmers in Botswana while we wait for harvesting from our plantation. This will be done to fill in the supply gap so that production continues.Packaging moringa oil in 2ltr 5l and 1ltr which will be sold to our respective target market, ie cosmetics companies, perfume companies and pharmaceutical industries. Get organic export certificate to allow us to sell bulk of moringa oil to the export market. The residue of the seed oil will be processed as animal feed and sold to farmers. Grow moringa using the space tree method as it is best for leaves and seed harvesting. Seeds are seasonal we will target farmers who grow moringa seeds during peak season and buy in bulk to store. This will ensure we run our moringa oil and feed business in a sustainable manner ensuring that production is not disrupted. Ask for small sample of seeds from different suppliers and local farmers before buying in bulk to ensure that we process good quality seeds and leaves. Buy thoroughly clean seeds to avoid having too much debris which could add weight and increase costs. Our business model is based on farmers supplying seeds and we buy them at fair price providing them with income and we process raw material. Partner with organisations such as africrops, earth oil, ministry of agriculture. Financing source will come from local Citizen Entrepreneur Development Agency (CEDA) and impact investors.
