Enabling Rural Women Add Value To Their Agricultural Produce (Maize)
Explain your idea in details:
The major objective of my idea is to enable rural women whose only source of livelihood is small-scale farming add value to their produce (maize) so as to attract a fair price and also diversify their economy. Most of the women in the rural areas of Masaka are house wives with minimal education and dont produce maize on a large scale due to limited land and the need to stay home to look after their children. All this presents a barrier while trying to access good markets and they end up diverting all their raw produce into feeding their families. My organization Women With Income (WOWI) for the start is going to consist of 20 economically struggling women who are doing maize production on a small scale and have no access to markets. With the funds provided I will be able to purchase and install a maize milling machine since I already have space in my existing ware house. The women through the organization (WOWI) will receive better farming skills with a chance to have hands on experience on the best agricultural practices at my familys commercial fields. From that they will be expected to produce at least 100kgs of maize in a given season and this maize will be brought to the installed Maize milling machine and processed. The maize flour will be packaged under the brand name WOWI Maize Flour and then after sold to different clients including, schools and at an opened WOWI retail outlet.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
With improved income from selling packed maize flour, the production of each member will increase by twofold as there will be improved farming skills from the model farms, better access to fertilizers and pesticides from the profits generated. The percentage of the income that is retained in the common pool of the organization will also help members to access quick money to help improve on their productivity. There will be diversification into poultry farming, as members will have access to poultry feeds from my already existing Animal Feeds Business that is boosted by the supply of maize bran as a byproduct of maize processing from the organization maize milling machine. With proper documentation and statistical skills the production rate of each member will be monitored to ensure that there is an upward trend and for constant or downward trends in production better performing members will share ideas to help struggling members. With registered success the organisation will add more members to make the total 40.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The maize milling machine is going to be located in my warehouse and organization members will bring in their produce which will be weighed upon receipt and recorded in books. The maize will be processed collectively and then packaged under the brand name WOWI Maize Flour. The flour will be sold majorly to schools through the WOWI outlet that will be opened to enable easy access by customers. Profits generated will be distributed among members depending on the kilograms of raw maize that were brought in. A 10% cut from the net profit of each member will be retained so as to create a pool that will provide money for easy access to membership loans and daily operation of the maize milling plant. The maize bran from the milling machine will help boost my already existing Animal Feeds Business. Members who have shown stability in their production can always diversify into Poultry Keeping as there will be easy access to feeds from my Animal Feeds business at subsidized prices. Members will additionally be able to acquire farming skills from some of the best farmers in the area who are already my customers.
