Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Solid waste management (SWM) is a key utility service that generally goes by unnoticed. If it does not function well, SWM keeps drawing public, political, and media attention in the country. 12 SDGs and their pertinent targets have a direct link to SWM. Solid waste collection is one of the basic services, which, together with sanitation, would make a considerable difference to the lives of billions of people worldwide, probably those who need development the most. In the rural areas of Zimbabwe uncollected waste is usually dumped in watercourses or vacant land or burned in the open air near the residences. Such practices pose health risks to the residents. Open burning of solid waste in the rural areas is a major contributing factor to Global Warming and Climate Change. Establishment of a rural community based waste management organisation will be one of the lasting solutions to the problem of poor solid waste management. Considering the current existing waste management programmes in Zimbabwe, the rural community is a bi neglected as more focus is directed to the urban community. This project will make a difference as it aims at shifting the focus and include the rural community and create employment. This project will be guided by the Environmental Management Act (CHAPTER 20:27) 2007 of Zimbabwe, the SDGs and any other existing compliance obligations. 1. Expected Accomplishments EA1: Improved Solid Waste Collection Services in Rural areas of Zimbabwe EA2: Creation of employment through Solid Waste Management in the rural areas of Zimbabwe 2. Indicators of achievement IA1: Increased number of solid waste collection centres in rural areas of Zimbabwe IA2: Increased number of manufacturing industries partnering the rural solid waste management committees IA3: Increased number members of the rural community benefitting from solid waste management practices in the rural areas
