An Eco- friendly fuel as an alternative to charcoal energy used as fuel for cooking
Explain your idea in details:
The idea is to convert biodegradables like plant waste, wood, paper, food waste, leaves, and grass clippings into an eco-friendly fuel that can be used as charcoal for cooking. The main objectives of this idea is to eliminate if not eradicate our streets and landfills of these wastes that are causing pollution of our environment, and secondly to stop or minimize deforestation. Charcoal is the primary fuel that are used by domestic homes and well established businesses for cooking. Everyday, our trees are cut down on daily basis to produce charcoal to be used by these homes and businesses. We want to produce this product that will replace the traditional charcoal because this traditional product is affecting our environment negatively, and causing more health risks. We will firstly educate people on the importance of this, and why we all must collaborate to save our planet. With this, we will now have site or a designated area where these wastes will be converted into our final product called BRIQUETTES,which is the eco-friendly fuel, used as an alternative to the traditional charcoal used in homes for cooking. The steps in achieving this is pretty simple and can be explained as follow: You firstly carry on the process called Carbonization, the biodegradables are now crushed, sieved, mixed with binder made from shredded papers obtained from schools and offices, etc. The addition of water and finally the final product after extruding. The final product is now used for cooking.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
We are expecting huge impact in that, people will now know the importance of these wastes, and how they affect our environment negatively, and why it is important that we recycle and use the products for our general benefit. This will also have positive impact on the lives of millions of Liberians especially those in the rural areas that do not have access to energy like electricity. They will no longer have to spend longer time in the forest or bushes to collect fuels for cooking. Their environments will be cleaner as well, and sicknesses like Cholera, malaria and diarrhea will be minimized. Definitely, our success will be evaluated by the cleaniness of our streets in the major towns and cities, the number of homes using our product, the level of employment opportunities created, and of course the revenues or income generated. Profitaring is not our primary objective, we want a cleaner and safer environment for all of us, and the generations to come.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
For the implementation and sustainability of this idea, we will begin with the manual mean or from a small skill and after gaining relevance, we will purchase advance modernized machines to increase productivity. The manual mean is embodied with a series of processes that can be broken down as carbonizing, crushing, mixing and extruding. To finance this start up, I have explained my idea to like-minded young men and women, who have agreed and expressed interest and wished to collaborate with me in achieving this goal. So each and everyone of us that are part of this project will contribute finances and /or materials in realizing our goal. Until this is profitable and start bringing in income , which it will in the soonest possible time,we will not do distribution or sharing of what so ever of finances. This is why we all are working as volunteers for now to grow the business to a certain extent that we want it to be. Presently, we are made of a team of four individuals including myself. Three males whose qualifications are in administration and management, marketing and engineering and the female is an environmental engineer.
I was born in an extended family in Harbel, Margibi County, Liberia on April 9,1989. I am the first of six children from my mother, who was my father's third wife. I am also the first of my father's twenty children to have completed high(secondary)school and went to college. I am motivated by the fact that, I came from such a complex home and environment, and can still have a positive impact in my country and the world at large.I am also motivated by the fact that I do not want to fail. Because I do not want to fail, I put in a 100 and 1 percent in every thing that I do. I wished to be a social entrepreneur one day not for profit making, but for the positive contributions I will be making to my community, country and the world at large. With the success of this idea and award, I believe strongly, I can kick-start my career of being a changemaker and a social entrepreneur.
