Online Secondary School for everyone, everywhere (Naijasec)
Explain your idea in details:
Education can only be termed quality, when students interest is merge with school learning to provide the needed knowledge for students to further express their talent in innovations. Providing access to quality education is therefore a necessity to promoting overall education. As attention is being given to basic education as well as post-secondary education, attention should also center on secondary education for proper economic development. For this reason, I came up with an idea to create an online school for students in Nigeria and diaspora particularly in their secondary school level, as a means to bridge the inequality educational/learning gap between students from high background families and students from low background families by reason of social or economic status, giving everyone equal opportunity to make a difference. The goal of this is to: 1. Leverage on the online advantage in making education fun, by creating an academic website with uploaded materials both in texts and video format to enhance learning in all major topics and subjects of the secondary school. The website will also involve an interactive forum for students to get together and also discuss how school works can be applied to real life issues. 2. Considering the learning pace of some students and the financial inability of some parents to send their children to standard schools, a website as this will get all this done all in one. 3. This idea also extend to interior villages without any proper school or internet access. We intend sensitizing them on Education and packaging the whole tutorials of secondary school subjects into smart phones for the teachers to use as guide in teaching the community children. This is really a work we want to give ourselves to, till Youths and teenagers who are - Future hopes, are enlightened to basic knowledge for relevance.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
With the leverage of the internet in this information age where "Nigeria with an estimated 193 million population, has 162 million mobile subscriptions, which amount to 84 per cent of the population (guardain news)", online classes in accordance with the teaching curriculum of the federal republic of Nigeria to all levels of secondary school students in subjects being offered in classes will be given, as a way to contribute to the fulfilment of the sustainable development goal on quality education and reducing inequalities. Secondly, this initiative creates a network that will further enhance students interest in learning as well as create an interactive user forum for students to get engage with one another socially and likewise discuss school assignments. The platform will thereby challenge them to applying learning skill in solving societal challenges. It should be noted under vocational studies in the secondary school curriculum that hands on video practicals on several vocations like bead, hat, soap, cakes, shoes, clothes makings and many more will be uploaded for students to work on, as a means to bring out the entrepreneurship strength in them. Students will be encouraged to upload their practical works on the website for others to get motivated as they get financially independent. This Idea will also be of help to students in higher institution with deficiency in secondary subjects and as well be a guide to secondary school teachers while teaching. As an online school which will involve professionalism. Professionals in Teaching, ICT, Mass communication, Project management and Instructional designs will also be grafted into the idea thereby creating employment opportunity for several people.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
To implement this: 1. I am creating a website -together with fellow web developers-which has the similitude of a school in classes, assignments, test, promotional exams, scores, Student team work, discussion and get together arena. 2. I will upload topical notes -gotten from a network of volunteered team members (who are Academicians) - on each subjects inline with Nigeria's Ministry of Education teaching curriculum and allow students unrestricted access to them. 3. I will collaborate with distinguished schools -where learning is made practical- to provide video materials of their classes, which will uploaded online for students access. 4. Give away gifts to students when they answer a tough question on the site as a means to encourage learning. 5. Organize sectional competition across schools, challenging students initiative. 6. Make a public show of talented students towards sponsorship academically. As a means to sustain the idea: 1. A management framework is set up that comprises of Board members (in aspect of ICT, Finance, Partnership and Academics.), Advisors (which is a 5-member team from areas in Education, Government, Advocacy and Law) and Operational Officers (comprising of teachers who will monitor each online class and give help to users as necessary) 2. At the early stage of the project, crowdfunding will be adopted to cater basic financial needs 3. With the website having a strong SEO (search engine optimization) which will imply high traffic on the website, advertising Educational organizations and materials on the platform will be encouraged as a means to financially sustain the idea overtime. 3. Collaboration and partnership with public sectors, private sectors, NGO, Government organization will also be a means towards sustainability as this idea has also been proposed to government officials in Nigeria.
I am Oyedele Temitope James, a Nigerian citizen born 13th May, 1991. I graduated from Physics department at the Federal University of Technology, Akure. As a lifelong learner, after my graduation, I learnt motion graphics and animations as a means to explain difficult educational concept to the required. I major now in ICT, Motion graphics, instructional designs, Web development and teaching. I developed passion for the idea when I served my country last year as a teacher in a remote part of Country. As a teacher, I had no access to teaching guide and likewise teaching curriculum and I later discovered that this is the state of many schools in developing countries like mine in which students from low background families have restricted access to quality education. I suffered similar challenge as it took me 4years after my secondary school to gain admission for higher studies in the university. I see this as a major problem that needs to be solved. Since secondary school students uses smart phones and engage their spare time on social media doing almost nothing that contributes to their future; it will be a good idea to stir their interest in learning using the internet and in so doing, provide unrestricted access to quality education to everyone, everywhere irrespective of social or economic status. I hope, I get this done.
