Explain your idea in details:
The main objective is to promote the use of mechanization and quality inputs through education so as to increase smallholders family's food security, increase household income and improve quality of life. This can be achieved through a farmer to farmer extension model thus reducing the extension officer to farmer ratio of 1:5000 to Food and Agriculture Organization rate of one extension officer to 400 farmers The following activities will me in implementing this idea. An array of public-private partnerships both locally and internationally that help the farmers get the right skills and more farming loans. These will be Government Agencies, Learning institutions, NGOs, Religious Institutions and other parties. Training farmers on agronomic practices, post harvest handling and entrepreneurship programs that will be offered in remote areas as well as online that is social media, thus allowing farmers in remote locations save on travelling costs and participate from far more easily. Linking farmers to a reliable markets and financiers for farming loans. Supply of quality agricultural inputs to the farmers on time. Continuous M&E for Trainer of trainers and farming projects to enhance project sustainability.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
My target is the youth, school ,colleges and smallholder farmers. The benefits will be farmers linked to reliable markets, timely supply of quality agricultural inputs, tens of thousands employment opportunities created annually.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
Typical farmer to farmer extension model programs will carry out 25 demonstrations plots each targeting 100 farmers after every three months 2500 farmers *4 annually is 10,000 farmers reached. At least 75% of the farmers trained will be linked to funding for agricultural projects that will employ 3 or 4 other youth in the community thus 30000 employment opportunities created through the businesses model. Source of finance will be from selling agricultural inputs, exporting agricultural commodities, selling index based crop insurance, loans and grants. The collaborators will be Government Agencies, Learning institutions, NGOs, Religious Institutions,Research institutes, banks and other parties.
I am 28 years old with a bachelor degree in commerce finance, four years work experience in sales and marketing of agricultural inputs and one year experience as an accountant with an Non Governmental Organisation. As a marketing manager i have linked many farmers groups and individual farmers to reliable agronomists for agronomic assistance, affordable quality agricultural inputs directly from importers to farmers thus eliminating the additional costs associated with middlemen and fake agricultural inputs. While working with Soteni Kenya an Non Governmental Organization i worked with 20 farmers groups each with 100 farmers. While at the university i served as the organizing secretary for two years for both Christian Union and Kenyatta University HIV/AIDS Control Unit.As a result over 200 students were lead to christ, over 2000 students checked their HIV/AIDS status and counselled on how to live a responsible life.In addition i served as the chairman of environmental club while at high school where we planted a school orchard with 200 grafted mango trees and 3,000 pine trees around the school. I have done too an online course on small business management from Luminary Small business Academy. Constantly i do check websites for organisations like Oxfam,Africa Harvest,FAO,AGRA and so many others for updates. What motivates in this is having realized that farmers buy agricultural inputs at high prices but lack inadequate knowledge like which seed variety is for which region and other agronomic services hence incurring huge losses as well as lack of market for their produces. My idea is to produce rich farmers who will be role models in the society for generations to come.
