community empowerment centers
Explain your idea in details:
Community Empowerment Centers (CEC): the CEC will provide a platform for pre-primary education and adult literacy programs. Permaculture will be an integral part of the centers as a way of providing for the community and a means of self-sufficiency and sustainability. In conjunction, the centers provide a hands-on training for mothers in crafts and other forms of marketable skills, and then link them to a potential market and better employment opportunities. Thus, enable them to better support themselves and their families. The CEC - in principle - will follow a subversive approach to education, whereby it seeks to primarily enable children and parents to acquire a diverse set of skills along with academia.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Having taken literacy and skill trainings parents/guardians will be better grounded to provide care and support for themselves and their families. Thus,mothers/guardians will develop entrepreneurial skills and become economically independent. Children with a 11 pre-primary education will be well prepared to join government primary schools, and advance in their path. Nonacademic programs will capacitate the youth; boost their self-esteem and confidence to make them an integral part of the society. These centers will serve as an opportunity platform for the underserved where private enterprises will easily locate skilled workers in diverse areas of economic activities. In addition they will be designed to function flexibly and accommodate varied activities in season and time serving as a vibrant community center and support cooperative living. The permaculture - in addition to providing food security and establishing cyclical economy and sustainability of the centers - will help to scale up and expand the centers. In due time, when centers are better developed and equipped, children will be able to follow through their education well into high school level.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
I envision the idea being realized through a highly collaborative process. The community i work with will be involved from the very beginning of the project in drafting ideas up to building and operating the centers. Seed funding, fund raising, in kind contribution and expert time are inputs i intend to employ to realize the project. Eventually the centers will be equipped with income generating activities to support and sustain on their own. Universities, professional associations, government institutions, corporate partnerships along with emerging architects will be key collaborators in this venture.
I, Biniam Hailub born in 1987, am an aspiring architect from Ethiopia. I have studied architecture at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development (EiABC) and graduated in BSc in 2012. As part of my five and a half years of undergraduate degree studies, I was extensively trained in different design competences and other relevant skills. Upon completion of my studies, I started practicing architecture in a local firm where I did my internship as well. There I was able to work on major national and regional projects. In doing so, I was able to collaborate and coordinate a team of professionals on diverse projects from inception to a successful completion. In 2015, I joined the university where I studied as an assistant lecturer and I work there to date. A personal exploration of architecture and designs potential as an instrument to bring about change and equity, has led me to leave my office in June 2017 where I was involved in mainstream conventional design. Since then I have dedicated my time to socially motivated engagements and academia. So far I am able to; 16 Initiate a design teaching studio Social Studio with a focus on underserved majorities, promoting social, economic and environmental sustainability Initiate and cooperate on arts project with Goethe-Institute, Addis Ababa, Collaborated and conducted an artivisim project with special need children at Local special need education center Held an first of its kind architectural event at public park showcasing works of the social studio along with other activities Started a monthly open talk for idea sharing on diverse areas at EiABC and, working on scaling up the social studio into a design-build studio, upcoming workshops, publication and exhibition founded a design initiative called addis design initiative /ADI/
