Cultural reforms through sports
Explain your idea in details:
The organization will also design and implement an inclusive and integrative after school learning and sports programs for both the primary age children with and without disabilities that will help them to interact with each other while promoting mutual understanding and social inclusion. Furthermore the business will teach life skills and crafts to the women with disabilities in order to give them a kick start in life and empower them to do something that will help them earn a living and lead independent lives as well as develop a transitional school and work improvement programs. The program will form partnerships and provide services to local schools and rehabilitation centers while working with the international community that offer similar programs. Our goal is to foster a commitment in people with impairments that will promote pro-social friendships; interpersonal skills and re- assert a sense of hope in the future. Only through personal relationships can a sense of individual responsibility be re-established that will give the youth the commitment to follow through on a path to adulthood with a sense of pride and accomplishment. People with impairment already face a wide range of personal challenges and the idea is to try and present an environment that eradicates or at least minimizes as many of the barriers as possible to participate in sports and learning and foster inclusion in society. The aim is to involve management with different skills ranging from Information technology, accountants, Sign language specialists, weavers and potters, chefs and Para-Sport academics with qualifications. It is the intention of the business to have 13 employees
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
In the 2011 Botswana population and housing census, there were 59 103 people with disability in Botswana within the total population of 2 024 904 with more than fifty percent comprising of the youths who are the main target for our programs who need such a center to reconstruct their capabilities, discover the potential and to ensure that they implement what they would have learned. Through different volunteer roles, with disabled person organization, I realized that women with disabilities are hard hit by poverty as they have a double burden of being a woman and being disabled and they are not easily absorbed in the mainstream working environment as compared to their male counterparts and end up being victims of sexual abuse where they eventually contract diseases such as HIV/AIDS. i wish to also have program that target disabled women and will help restore their dignity and give them a sense of belonging and hope for the future. They will be literacy, sewing and craft classes for them that will give them a foundation that will help them to further pursue these programs on their own at a higher level once they have completed our classes and to start their own craft business at their homes. Also some will be retained to operate these classes and teach them to others. They will also be offered Numeracy and computer classes that will empower them to be able to deal with and solve everyday challenges and for them to keep up with the ever changing techno environment. Overtime the programs will create a learning environment that will be an invaluable resource center to the people with disability and the community at large, igniting hope that everyone can enjoy a quality life with dream and hope.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
This idea is a direct responses to the growing number of concerns raised by people with disabilities. The formal education system does not fully cater for them. The physical education curriculum at the schools is not yet adapted for persons with disabilities. There is no yet an organ that deals with disability sport in the country, linking Botswana to international organizations such as the role that Botswana Olympic committee plays for the able bodied athletes. There are currently no inclusive adapted sporting facilities that caters for persons with disabilities hence Botswana is still failing to send the physically disabled athletes to international competitions resorting only to focus on the visually impaired as they do not require specialized training facilities and can be trained anywhere. Partnership will be made with education institution that offers special education for teachers in order to teach them about adapted physical education programs that they can teach the learners at schools. An adapted indoor sporting complex will be built which will cater for different impairments where children and youth with disabilities will be trained and promoted into main stream competitive sporting clubs in order to address the current situation of segregation and exclusion. The sports programs will be designed in a way that children without disabilities can also participate in order to foster inclusion and competitions will be accompanied with education themes such as kicking substance abuse or HIV/AIDS with lectures on such preceding the games. The goal of the program is to provide Para-sport education to children with disabilities and allow them to choose from the available sporting programs available according to their preferences while collaborating with main stream national sports clubs so that they can absorb those who will be graduating from this program.
I live in Botswana, Africa. I am a female, aged 32 years. I am currently pursuing masters in Olympic studies, Olympic education, organization and management of Olympic events with specialization in para-sport. i have interest in designing adapted physical education programs for persons with disabilities and will be responsible for rolling out the program that deal with sports as a tool for social inclusion and rehabilitation. There is more to sports than just fun and games; there are certain intrinsic values that are embedded in it such as courage, determination, team spirit, cooperation, inspiration, equality which has the power to transform an outlook towards life when grasped by children with disabilities. The courage to try something new that is outside their comfort zone, the determination to succeed, the spirit of cooperation that is cultivated in team sport and challenging stereotypes. These values can be transferred to everyday life where children will grow to become adults who are not intimidated and fearful but have the self- confidence to follow any career of their choice. I am convinced that Para-sport makes a huge difference to the perception of ability and once the parents realize what their children are able to do their attitude towards them will change as well as a change in the children perceptions of the direction of their lives with an overall change in the mindset of the community. People with disabilities have lost faith in the responsibilities that awaits them if they are successful in putting their life together. To accomplish this goal people with disabilities especially children and youth should be in a caring, inclusive learning environment that promotes their best effort and reinforces personal respect. I have Financial Management Sciences degree which will be an assets towards managing the finances of the business.
