Explain your idea in details:
This idea's main objective is: 1) to transform a non-white roofed neighborhood into a one-colored white-roofed neighborhood. 2) Become an alternative to glaciers where white roofs will reflect the heat all the way to space. 3) To make the neighborhood cooler because white is the coolest in all colors. 4) To save more energy. White roofs alleviate the devastating effects of global warming by reflecting it. Why white in all the colors available out there? Because the color white is a reflector. It appears "white" because it reflects all the colors in the visible light spectrum namely: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Because light is an energy, any color in the visible light spectrum can accumulate heat - except white because it reflects all the colors. On the contrary, black absorbs all light, since light is an energy, a black object when struck by sunlight will accumulate heat faster than any color. The effective ways for this idea to succeed is to encourage and raise awareness to the household owners the importance of a white-colored roof. Either through a door-to-door approach, or through neighborhood-wide advertisement, household owners will be informed about its benefits, and its tremendous help to the planet. Glaciers are calving at an astounding rate. If the current trend continues, coastal areas: Miami, New Orleans, Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam), and Mumbai (India), will be vulnerable to flooding and other catastrophes. Hence, a white roof can be one of the best alternatives to replace the glaciers that are rapidly melting. Imagine if there are white-roofed cities or neighborhood, the entire area will not be vulnerable to heatwaves because it reflects heat coming from the light. All in all, the idea is good not only for the environment, but also to the community at large.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
If all goes according to plan, the neighborhood will experience cooler temperatures, save more energy, and reflect the Sun's heat all the way to space instead of trapping the heat, and hereby lessening the effects of global warming. The neighborhood approximately has 40-50 houses that will be involved in this neighborhood-wide project. Which a budget for each house reaching $400 more or less with paintings and necessary tools. Since white-roofed households will be cooler (literally),any household appliances, like the air conditioner for instance, will be used less frequently and therefore save at least 25% of energy cost. Thus, this solves SDG number 7. A white-roofed neighborhood also prevents heatwaves - especially during summer. According to research, a white-painted area is 5.55 degrees cooler; this significant drop in temperature is highly beneficial to both the owner and to the planet. As above-mentioned, the household owners will be eligible for loans once they acquiesced to the idea to change their roofs color. The targeted neighborhood area is located in a private subdivision in Manila where numerous well-to-do household owners and established households are residing. Judging from the neighborhood's financial capacity, many can afford to repaint their houses if informed even without sponsorship. The primary measures to evaluate the success of the project is knowing how many of the household owners decided to repaint their houses. In the first year, OPERATION: S.N.O.W. W.H.I.T.E's target will be 40-50 houses since because that is the estimated number of houses all in all, not to mention, it is a well-to-do neighborhood. Household owners, if given a persuasive and informative presentation about the effectiveness of white roofs, then it is possible that the majority of the household owners will be convinced to repaint. Second year, 40-50 houses - the operation will be conducted until all roofs are white.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
Some houses in the neighborhood are exceedingly high to check its roofs color, so apps like Google Earth, or Google Maps will be instrumental in pinpointing non-white roofed houses. To execute this grand idea into fruition, it has three phases. Phase 1: All non-white roofed household owners in the neighborhood will be informed about the benefits of a white-painted roof. A two-story house has a normal roof size of 1,500 square feet. Painting costs $400. As mentioned, homeowners who cannot afford the paint and necessary materials will be given the materials through a loan to be sponsored by the street's local government. I have already come in contact with with a local government official who can assist me in executing the idea in our neighborhood. Phase two: owners who cannot afford will be offered through loans sponsored by the local government. Phase three: Owners will be given at least 6 months to 8 months repaint their roof. Lastly, if the owners managed to paint within the required time frame, they are going to be commended and reimburse 10% of what they have spent painting their roofs.
My name is Paul. I am currently an undergraduate pursuing a Journalism course in the Philippines. I am a straight A student starting high school. In my senior year I was one of the students with the highest average in the graduating class. Now in college, I remained a consistent i academic achiever in the class. For the past three years, I was included in the Dean's List for two straight years. One year left, and I will be graduating from college, and from there I am still undecided if I will work or will I pursue a master's degree to further improve my career in life. I came up with a white roof neighborhood because I have read in a magazine that the world's glaciers are melting at unprecedented rates. So I began thinking how can we provide an alternative to the loss of those glaciers. Then I realized that white roofs might become the alternative to reflecting the sun's heat that glaciers similarly do because they are white. I wanted this idea to be implemented in my neighborhood because most of the roofs here are multicolored. There is nothing wrong with multicolored roofs, but it is still absorbing the other colors in the spectrum, so it will not be as efficient in cooling the house unlike white. I have desired this idea into reality that I have forged networks with officials that may aid me in turning this idea into fruition. I named this Operation Snow White to sound like a legitimate operation conducted by the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency). As a child who grew up watching James Bond films, I wanted to be creative so I decided to name my idea CIA style!
