Explain your idea in details:
The whole bag renting machine's goal is to make recycling bags as easily accessible as the plastic ones so that people will come to the bag machine rather than purchasing the plastic bags. The machine will be like a vending machine. You pay deposit according to the bags you are going to rent and simply give it back when you remember before the renting deadline. You can also choose different types of bags according to your need such as sizes and functions (heavy lifting, or help maintain the temperature for cold food, to separate raw food from cooked ones etc.). This bag renting machine would therefore solve people's problem of overusing plastic bags (price, to use this machine is free; convenience, it allows you to rent as many bags as you want and whatever types of bags you may need) The core reason for using this bag renting machine is to make recycling bags the trend of peoples daily life. The innovation behind this idea is share economy. To make this machine economically sustainable, all the recycling bags coming out of the machine will become a marketplace for advertiser, for example, it can be film promotion for the new film, print some upcoming film posters onto the bags, giving offers like getting free popcorn when showing the bag when purchasing film tickets. So that, people will start carrying the bags everywhere like WOM marketing for advertisers and recycling bags themselves. Whats more is it would be a bigger trend if big brands like LV, Chanel, Gucci could join by creating their iconic bags in a very limited number, like 1 in 1000. Then using this bag machine also become a gamble, you have the chance to even win a limited edition bags by paying for a normal recycling bag.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The expected impact for this idea would be banning of plastic bags as its biggest reason for existence has been replaced by this bag renting machine when it is more environmental friendly, sustainable, trendy and multi-functional. The target for this idea would be the entire society once it is successfully implemented. The measure to evaluate the success would be the number of bags that has been rented per month versus the number of plastic bags have been purchased per store. This number would be the most straightforward figure that tells the result of this idea in terms of shaping peoples purchase habbit.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
Plan for implementation: All the bags will have a scanning code to record its renting and return. Put a bag renting machine inside every super market right before the cashier or self-check out point (could be more than one if it is a bigger market). All of the machine would be workable between each other, so you can easily return your bag anywhere convenient to you and get your deposit back. If failed to do so, your deposit will be charged, and you will technically end up buying the bag. The returned bags will be either properly sanitized or being recycled when it has reached its usage limitation according to governmental law. I'm 23 years old, I'm study towards a master degree in marketing strategy and innovation in Cass business school. I'm from China and have been studying in UK for around 4 years. I came up with this idea because of a innovation module I was having in the class regarding solving one of UN's sustainable development goals. I'm good at learning new things and enjoy creativity. My country China is a very creative country and it is also one of the countries that practices sharing economy in every corner of life from car pooling (even before Uber started) to online group purchase together to rent a monthly closet. I got inspired by ofo bike sharing over the world and I think this model could work as it is a win-win-win for the consumer, the multi companies (as long as they need advertisement) and the environment.
