EMPOWER WITH BIOGAS

Summary of your idea

This idea is meant to help introduce biogas to people's homes. I come from an area where people rely heavily on fire wood for fuel. There are also very few households that have access to electricity. The project is meant to reduce the reliance on firewood for fuel to protect the vegetation and also adoption of biogas as a source of energy including for lighting. Biogas does not have harmful emissions and so would help in environmental sustainability as we protect the air around us and also trees. The project requires training of several people who would assist in biogas installation in the area and also to get equipment to use in installation of the plants. Cooking is traditionally the role of the women. Installing biogas plants will help make the work easier for them. Use of firewood is quite a daunting task as it is tiring. People have to make sure they cut the trees and also ensure that they have sizeable pieces which can be used in fire. Some of the women also have to walk long distances to get the firewood or even buy it. Getting firewood is also not easy. Most households have at least one cow which they can use to get the manure for the firewood. This will mean that most of them can manage to sustain biogas plants which is more cost efficient and energy efficient. The manure from the plants can go back to be used in the gardens as they are doing it currently. The youth in the area can be trained to do the work and this can be a source of employment to them. To do this work I would need funds to subsidise the cost of equipment and also to train the youth to start the project.

Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development

The project will help in protection of the environment by reduction on reliance on firewood. Use of biogas in households will help protect the population of trees. Most households have cows that produce manure and so they will regularly have manure to feed their plants. They can also still use the manure in the Shamba after using it for biogas production and so it does not really interfere with what they are used to doing as most of them are farmers. The biogas plants can help to release people from cooking and be able to perform other duties of development as cooking will now take a shorter time. They also help women to bond more with their families rather than being handled in the kitchen struggling to use firewood. The project is also meant to give seedlings for planting to help people replace the trees that have been cut and also help encourage a culture of planting trees as people often cut them even for money. I am hoping to start with 100 households divided into two phases of 50-50 households.

Plans for implementation and sustainability

The project is to be financed partly by the beneficiaries, donors and partners and other collaborators: Beneficiaries:15% Partners:75% The beneficiaries contribution will be in form of labour and land. Ten youths will be trained to spear head the project and then with time more youths can be added to help in implementing the project. The beneficiaries will be selected using various social gatherings such as churches and also peer group meetings. The seedlings for tree planting will be provided through various agencies that deal with environmental conservation and also through my personal funds.

Your profile

I am 29 years old. I have a soft spot for the environment. I grew up with a backdrop of lush green vegetation in my home area. With time I have witnessed it dwindling which breaks my heart.I would like to protect the vegetation for future generations. I am also interested in alternative energy sources especially those that reduce pollution and a readily available.
