Summary of your idea

There are two core objectives to approaching my idea, Moringa tea. Firstly, improvement of our Healthcare delivery system. Moringa is an acclaimed plant with numerous health benefits, the Moringa drink (Tea) is one of the Chief sources of vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), and also increases the proper functioning of intercellular materials, prevent Scurvy and build corrective tissue fibres. Secondly, it is aligned with the on-going Economic reform of the Nigerian Government which is to reduce excessive dependency on oil and to promote diversification of the economy and encourage farming especially amongst the youth. Some of my activities are the Value Chain development of Moringa Oliefera, which focuses on Cultivation, Processing and Packaging of Moringa Oliefera Tea in permeable tea bags with different flavours such as vanilla, strawberry, ginger and exotic fruits. I have conducted a comprehensive feasibility study which shows that it will be easier for Moringa consumers in the south-eastern part of my country to have access to my products; reasons are that my competitors are all based in the south-western and northern part of the country. Secondly, there is no Moringa tea facility in the south-eastern part of Nigeria where I am domiciled. I have the option to be adopting an innovative model where the leaves will be sterilized and blanched during processing in order to reduce temperature build up and possible detoriation. I will be using solar drying equipment with Ultra Violet (UV)treated polyethylene so that the temperature does not go above 55oc thereby ensuring that the final product is brittle hence its nutritional and medicinal values are guaranteed. Moringa is a useful tropical tree, the relative ease with which it propagates both sexual and asexual means its low demand for soil nutrients and water after being planted makes its production and management easy.

Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development

Moringa tea will help my countrys maternal health development program achieve the Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5 of reducing child mortality and improved nutrition for children and mothers thereby improving maternal health before 2015. My target is in phases, the children, pregnant women and the Government. One in five children in Nigeria dies before his/her fifth birthday due to factors related to malnutrition which makes them vulnerable to killer diseases. Moringa tea has the capacity to improve the health of children between the age bracket 1-3 by reducing malnutrition and anemia. Pregnant Women can consume my products to improve their health in order to give birth to healthy babies. My products will also help nursing mothers produce more milk during lactation thereby increasing appetite. Moringa is a strong antioxidant against prostate and skin cancers. It is an anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-viral agent. I will propose to the Government to adopt my products as part of the national and public school feeding programs and maternal health initiatives respectively. My Moringa Tea production for export market will contribute positively to our value-added exports, as against the promotion of non-oil exports, and the dependence on crude oil export as a major source of our foreign exchange earnings. This project will encourage diversification of the economy and promote non-oil export which would assist the Country in solving some of our fundamental Economic problem which includes chronic shortage of foreign exchange, fiscal balance of payments deficits, balance of trade equilibrium, mounting external indebtedness, debt service burden, and will also create employment, especially for the youth whom 20.3 million are unemployed growing at the rate of 16% per year. I will measure my success with the use of Questionnaires, and through Government Health agencies like State Ministry of Health, Maternal and Child health department.

Plans for implementation and sustainability

Since I have knowledge of the product Moringa, I will be the Chief Executive Officer saddled with the day to day running of the business. I will hire a food nutritionist to cater for the processing of the Moringa tea and will hire a business development officer whom will see to the marketing of the Moringa tea. I will employ the direct marketing approach were we will market our products directly to the public. We will organize consumer awareness workshops, community outreach programs, sensitization tours and advertising through the print, electronic and social media respectively. As this will all help to promote sales and aid in the area of sustaining the business. This business idea will be financed through cash gifts from family members, 10% equity from me (initiator) and grant from Government agencies, financial institution and funding gotten from competition as this. I will acquire a sizeable land at least of a 100 x 200 ft to enable a large cultivation of the product. Raw Materials will be gotten from the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) and Moringa Development Association, Enugu State Chapter. Whom I already have a cordial working relationship with. Currently, strategic partnerships and collaborations are being put in place with the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), and Moringa Development Association, Enugu State Chapter from whom my raw materials, seedlings and in-depth expertise for Moringa will be sourced.. University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) were the research on the numerous health benefits of Moringa were carried out. The State and Federal Government Ministry of Agriculture, Enugu State Ministry of Youth Development are all collaborators as they will help in organizing awareness workshops, community outreach programs, sensitization tours on the numerous health benefits of Moringa Oliefra.

Your profile

I am OKORO SAMUEL IKEMBA, a NIGERIAN. I am the last of four children born to Prof. and Mrs. Chris Okoro. I obtained my Bachelor of Science degree (B.sc) from Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) in 2008. I am a youth activist and I am the PRESIDENT, UMU-MAZI YOUTH CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY. My journey started after graduating from the University, it was an uphill task landing a job and so was it for 20.3 million unemployed Nigerian youths growing at 16% per year. With the prevailing economic situation, there was an increment in crime rate perpetuated by youth especially cyber fraud, armed robbery, cult violence and clashes, political and religious crisis. So because of the aforementioned prevalent situations I decided its time I ask what can I to do for my nation and not what will my nation do for me. I enrolled in a six month long intensive entrepreneurial program by the Center for Entrepreneurial Development Research (CEDR). And on completion I dedicated my time and resources and Founded Umu-Mazi Youth Cooperative Society, were we bring together youths between the ages of 12 to 35 for Entrepreneurship, Civic education, Mentoring and Leadership training, Community Development Services and Tribal integration. So far we have taught hundreds and have given out modules on Entrepreneurship to youths and youth based organization. We have aided and continue to be a platform on which members through the art of being able to write a business plan to secure grants, aid, soft loans to prosecute their business ideas. We have taught and handed out modules on civic and leadership education to our members and general public to enlighten them.
