Summary of your idea

Tororo youth fish farming is a business idea where cut fish, Mirror cup and Tilapia fish species will be raised in a fish ponds for a period of six month and the fish will be harvested and sold to the people . The objective of the enterprise is to dig up three fish ponds with a capacity of holding 5000 fish each in a period of two months and then raise 15,000 fish in six month and sell the fish to the people. The activities include : digging up of three fish ponds, fencing the ponds, fertilizing the ponds so that natural food for fish is available in the ponds, stock the ponds with young fish, feed the fish using fish meal which will be bought for six months and then harvest the fish and sell it. After harvesting the fish, the ponds will be cleaned and then restock it with young fish. The business is innovative in that it has both environmental and economic benefits. The fish ponds will help conserve fish and other microscopic aquatic plants and animals and the fish raised will generate income to the youth group. The initial cost of digging up the ponds is high but after the ponds have been dug, the operation costs become very small and the profits are high. The ponds can be used for many years. The natural resource for fish farming is a permanent water source which we have and the fish consumed in our area is got from Lake Victoria which is a distance of 200km a way and this makes fish in our area to be very expense and in addition to that, the number of fish in lakes in Uganda is reducing. The demand for fish is very high.

Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development

The business targets to raise 30,000 fish in a year that is 15,000 fish in six months. Each fish will weigh a minimum of 2kg and maximum of 4kg. The enterprise expects to raise a minimum of 60,000 kg of fish. If each kg of fish is sold at the cost of US$ 2, a total income of US$ 120,000 will be raised in one year minimum. The income raised will help reduce poverty to the youth in the group. There are 12 members in the group. All the youths in the group will be employed in the enterprise. The health status of the people in our community will improve greatly because many people will be able to consume fresh fish very rich in proteins which are body building food. Right now many people are not able to eat fresh fish sold in the markets of Tororo due to very high cost. A kilogram of fresh fish cost US$ 4. This only leaves the rich people who can afford the cost to eat fresh fish. Majority of the people are not able. So many people will be able to consume fresh fish because of this enterprise

Plans for implementation and sustainability

Fish farming business is a very profitable business in an area where there is no big fishing grounds nearby. The demand for fish becomes very high and the cost also becomes high due to transportation costs. One of our group members has got a permanent water source with enough land where the ponds are to be constructed. The business will hire an excavator to help dig the ponds. Three big ponds will be dug and each pond will be used to keep 5000 fish. The type of fish species that will be kept in the pond include: mirror cup, cut fish and Tilapia. These are very delicious fish consumed by many people and the demand for this type of fresh fish is very high and the market is very wide locally, nationally and internationally we are near the border of Uganda and Kenya. The ponds will be fertilized and fenced with chain link and barbed wires to prevent predators and thieves. The enterprise will purchase fish meal and young fish and stock them in the ponds and start feeding the fish for a period of six months and the fish will be harvested and sold in the market. After harvesting the fish, the ponds will be cleaned and the young fish re- stocked in the ponds . From the income got, 40% of it will be re- invested and 60% kept until two years when it has accumulated and then it will be divided equally among the group members. The financing sources for this enterprise include grants, loan and equity. The total funds needed to undertake this enterprise is US$ 15,500. The main collaborators in this business will be department of agriculture animal industries and fisheries Tororo district who will be consulted to provide technical assistance in fish farming.
