Summary of your idea
This is an initiative for the improvement of youth opportunities in leadership, business and self-expression. Zimbabwe has impressive literacy figures and a fairly academically focused society, however this tends to be a very narrow and grades oriented system with lots of pressure to stay and think within the box, extracurricular Literati Clubs within schools to counter this. This is a platform for people from different schools and backgrounds to meet and be involved in activities, in an inclusive, literary, entrepreneurial, intellectual, fun and charitable environment. The organization creates an official channel to aid in accessing finance for youth projects devised by members. Members will also be involved in charitable projects, especially in conjunction with other organizations, with a focus on providing motivated and young manpower. The program is designed to foster leadership though its semi-independent school cells and to create a positive environment for ideas and all forms of creativity. Students will also choose their student leadership and come up with unified agendas at conventions. Writing and entrepreneurship lessons will also be offered by qualified professionals for a fee to everyone with interest. True to the name Literati, the masterstroke is an interschool and national publication seeking to create an outlet for all this activity. An online publication (website) will also be published to expand the readership to worldwide standards. This will be open for all genres of writing with the goal being an entertaining and educating read. Writing competitions will also be held in partnership with local newspapers and sponsors open to non-members. There will be awards at the end of each year with various awards for different categories of excellence. The goal would be to establish a system of positive reinforcement for the youth and form a well-respected organization which will produce leaders and true citizens of the world.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
This initiative creates a much needed outlet for the creative energies of the youth. It also aims to create an environment and culture fostering original in-depth thought, good writing, entrepreneurship and companionship. The online part of the project will expose the young writers and entrepreneurs to the whole world out there. They will learn from global trends with the hope that they adapt and compete. The mentorship provided to the youth will see them achieving to the optimum levels of their potential; producing nation builders and world leaders. The philanthropic activity to be carried out will also make a great difference to the needy public while also providing youth with life lessons and creditable service time.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The Literati Club will be setup in the form of a social enterprise. This streamlines it to succeed in its set purposes. First, because the business besides sponsorship and non-governmental support, will seek self-sufficiency like any other profit making entity; secondly, it will also allow for motivation to the employees and members to see the effects of their work in the form of profit and to decide what new initiatives to use it on. Crowdfunding and personal contribution will be used for initial capital. Later, revenue can be generated from the subscriptions of the Literati Magazine by school libraries or sales to individuals for a nominal fee, an alternative would be via youth targeted advertising to make it free. Successful member founded projects, as well as well-wisher donations will also contribute to the finances of the business. Management of the organization will be divided between the founders, trustees and elected student leaders to ensure maximum social and corporate responsibility. The education part of the project (writing and entrepreneurship) will likely grow into a major revenue stream as these are very popular services. As such efforts will be made to expand this, even to the online world and beyond.
I am a blogger, writer, passionate amateur poet, dreamer, innovator, free thinker and wide-reading senior high school student from Zimbabwe, keen to make a difference. I find that the youth, like me (being one myself), are really energetic and willing to explore. Often the limitation is lack of opportunity; I intend to make this history. I also believe that opportunity should not be limited to what school one goes to, Literati ensures this. It also embodies much of who I am and what I believe in.
