Summary of your idea
There are many kinds of Arts back in the village i.e. pottery, tailoring (fashion), furniture making and mat weaving. The Impoverished state that people in my village live in while they are surrounded with all the resources that should enable them get out of this state of poverty is devastating.I just concluded my three year course in fashion and design at Evelyn College of Design in Nairobi. My plan is to invest my fashion and Design skills in all forms of these Arts in my village and translate them into creative designs that will sell and bring income to the people. I realized that we have untapped talent in the village and we leave it to waste. My project will involve working in collaboration with artisans, carpenters, potters and people involved in all forms of art in my rural home; these groups of people to help equip them with the right tools and new ideas that will make them successful in their businesses.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Sustainable development is generally thought to have three components i.e environment, society, and economy. The well-being of these three areas is intertwined, not separate. For example, a healthy, prosperous society relies on a healthy environment to provide food and resources, safe drinking water, and clean air for its citizens. Sustainability is a practice of thinking about a future in which environmental, societal, and economic considerations are balanced in the pursuit of development and improved quality of life. The project aims to tackle poverty and development issues and also equip the youth with knowledge on how to start up a business that will inspire them to be responsible in effecting change in their communities and from which they can earn a living. This will curb the issues of the youth idling around and involving themselves in criminal activities for this will engage them in an activity that they will earn a living from. Objectives To share knowledge and innovative technologies to achieve the goal of sustainability. To inspire the youth to be pro-active in nation building and development To promote unity amongst people through working in groups. To promote Peace and development. To address development and environmental needs of the society of present and future generations. Create employment opportunities To recruit more members to the field of Fashion and Arts
Plans for implementation and sustainability
I plan to do the designing and drafting of patterns of clothing, cut them then have people with a tailoring background do the stitching, also, I plan on working with Carpenters, potters and weavers where I will be creating the designs and provide the resources required e.g. wood and clay. This is going to be a great thing because people are going to earn money and benefit and cub this problem of poverty; its going to be the beginning of development in my village as well. This is going to take rigorous training sessions, where well be learning and getting knowledge from each other on what needs to be done for example; fashion and design involves sketching and drafting of the designs while in tailoring all that is required is the measurements of the client. The later will need to understand things about drafting and fashion and design so that it is easier to work together. This in the end will bring about resourceful manpower and business will pick up hence poverty reduction, it will also promote unity through working together.
I just concluded my three year course in fashion and design at Evelyn College of Design in Nairobi, I have worked as an intern with World Youth Alliance whose mission is to Work on trainings in the ideas and work of the Alliance in advocacy, culture and capacity building of young people, Identifying and training young leaders to communicate articulately on behalf of the intrinsic dignity of the human person. World Youth Alliance believes that arts and culture provide vital avenues for the expression of individual personalities, while revealing the universality of the human condition that transcends cultural values and heritage. As an intern at World Youth Alliance, I spearheaded a youth training project dubbed Kicking Out Poverty through entrepreneurship The project involved working with a youth group in Nairobi training them on how to make jewellery from beads and earn a living out of it through business. The project aimed to tackle development and poverty issues and equip the youth with knowledge on how to start up a business that would inspire them to be responsible in effecting change in their communities and from which they could earn a living and help their families. This would curb the issues of the youth idling around and involving themselves in criminal activities for it would engage them in an activity. I have also attended several fashion shows and fashion and arts related activities including; FAFA(Festival For African Fashion and Arts) events t, Nairobi Fashion Market, Kitenge Festival and now I have been selected to showcase my designs in the Kikoy Fashion Week an International event which will take place in August, from these events I get new ideas to add on what I already have.
