Summary of your idea
TEDU is a website which supplies a full study course about sex education knowledge for students at different ages. With 2 packages of service: Personal package and Education package for school, TEDU aims to replace real teachers at school in this sensitive subject in Vietnam. Each TEDU user can access the learning course designed specifically for their age, with video lesson, article, and interactive game. Each lesson is followed by a quiz that students must complete, and each course is concluded with an online test. The quiz and test result will be sent directly to the teacher in charge in each class or each school. So the teachers role is only to track students performance and assure that all students in class participate in the online course. TEDU user also can access to online advisor to talk, ask and get advice about their problem at puberty age. With this highly feasible idea, TEDU won the 3rd prize in the Mekong Business Challenge 2013/2014 after defeating hundreds of business models from teams of 6 countries in Mekong region. - Target market TEDU has 2 main target customer groups: The middle and high school in big city in Vietnam, and the parents whose children are in puberty age. - Special feature competitive advantage TEDU uses internet to save cost and the saving benefits is transfer to target customers. Furthermore, the online content is more effective in delivery the sensitive knowledge. Human cost is also low because the business model requires only few specialists to solve problem and gives advice for huge amount of users through online channel. In addition, TEDU has the first mover advantage, the online content, relationship with schools and brand recognition usually take a long time to build. This criterion makes the business become hard to copy by competitors.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Vietnam is a typical Asian country with the culture that forbids and avoids talking about sex related topic, even for education purpose. However, many researches from Ministry of Population and Family planning have shown that the lack of sex education is the main cause for the increasing number of teenagers abortion and the high rate of HIV (8% of all HIV patients are teenagers from 12 19 years old). In addition, the average age at first sex reduces very fast from 19 to 18 in the short period of 2008-2010. Thanks to the strengths of TEDU (a trusted, private and low cost online sex education platform), teenagers at least have sufficient fundamental knowledge about sex education after using TEDU learning method, which can help in decreasing 120.000 cases of abortion (about 40%) and the 3% of HIV at the age of puberty in first 5 years plan. Moreover, in Vietnam - a developing country, TEDU is expected to meet the demand of sex education at a low cost, yet show respect for Vietnamese culture, which traditionally avoids the topics on sex. In the long term, TEDUs products and its slogan with TEDU, awareness then action then change will stop all social issues related to the lack of sex education and make a contribution to Vietnam young generations sustainable development.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
1. Action plans Our TEDU is now at the end of positioning phase which involves activities of choosing target region and customer group, and at the beginning of the phase develop product after thorough analysis in market research. After constructing TEDU online sex education courses, we expect to launch our product to the market by focusing on highly-effective marketing activities such as utilising social media and offline events during our first year of development. We expect that our net profit will be even after 2 years of development. After this point, we will plan to expanding our products to other cities and region such as HCM and Danang which is our final phase of our business model. 2. Finance source During the start-up period, we will looking for sponsor from consultant entrepreneurs and non-profit organisations such as UNESCO, WHO, Action Aid, Save the Children etc. Our business idea has been awarded the 3rd prize at the Mekong Business Challenge Competition. The sponsor of the competition which is McKinsey Company felt interested in our business and commit for financing support. After launching, our business will receive revenue stream from usage fee, advertising fee and product-using fee. Through our financial analysis, we expect the total initial investment is approximately $1000 USD. The total expense of the first year will be equalised to $19,000 USD. The payback period is 2 year and 3 month with ROI of 1.19. 3. Collaborators Our collaborators will be most importantly experts and doctors from health-care centres and medical educational institutions, who provide trusted source of information. The second most important partners are online business experts, who assist us to introduce and advertise our products. Inside supporters of our business are IT & Website manager, student volunteers for project offline events and financial experts for financial consulting.
My name is Hoang Ngoc Anh. I am 22 years old and I am currently a senior year student in Foreign Trade University, Vietnam. During my Bachelors in Foreign Trade University, with strong interest in the business field, I focus on learning the business subjects like Marketing and Entrepreneurship and have enriched my experience by participating in many students entrepreneurial activities. As a member of Tomorrow Entrepreneur Club in my college, for example, I organized Kawai competitions yearly (one of the biggest business competition for students in North Vietnam) and several business workshops to promote entrepreneurship among students. To challenge myself, I have also participated in several business and marketing competitions; among which the most mentionable is my bronze prize in Mekong Business Challenge, a business challenge with more than 1000 participants from 6 countries in Mekong region. Currently, the lack of sex education has caused many problems in my country Vietnam. Many researchs from the Ministry of Population and Family planning have shown that the lack of sex education is the main cause for the increasing number of abortion of teenagers and the high rate of HIV of teenagers. Willing to solve the problem, I have united the students who have the same interest and willingness to use social business to improve life then together we started the TEDU project to provide online sex education to all Vietnamese teenagers who have internet access. I strongly believe in the success of the business model of TEDU as by using the online education platform TEDU require a low cost to set up while this platform can easily reach 31 million target customers through internet. And lastly, I have with me a strong team of talent and passionate teammates who share the goal to make this business idea a reality.
