Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development

Most tourism is self-serving in the sense that what it creates in host communities is really to benefit the tourist rather the community. Volunteer tourism however seeks to provide resources that are directed towards the community and the needs they have identified as important for their development. But, volunteer tourism is not just about the ideas, values, and aspirations for a better world in a broad sense. In many circumstances it concerns itself with how tourism with an added value of wanting to contribute back in destination areas can be used to support and enhance the local community. Voluntourism will not only help with the development of impoverished communities but also serve as a source of income for local communities, increase awareness and educate about conservation. More than that, we strongly believe through Travolteer.com we can help many Ngo(s) and their causes be known internationally. It is through Travolteer.com we want to provide Ngo(s) around the world explore self-sustainable practices by embracing voluntourism into part of its organizational activities.

Plans for implementation and sustainability

Travolteer.coms value proposition lies in their offerings of authentic, one of a kind travel destinations posted by NGOs who in contrast, paint a clearer picture of what is in offer compared to commercially driven tour operators. Interactive forums also provide a platform for travelers, to interact with one another in a global scale, share their volunteering travel experiences hence creating a sense of community at the same time giving constructive feedback to the Ngos on how they can improve their operations. All this while, it also creates and offers itself as a massive library of resource for travel, where consumers can find almost anything they are looking for. Travolteer.com includes affiliate links to accommodations and flight booking sites such as Expedia. Com, Booking.com, Zuji.com, Hotel Club and Hotels.com for travelers to compare rates offered across popular hotel booking sites as well as availability. This provides users the convenience of gathering information about their volunteering destinations and ease of planning their travels via a database of user-generated reviews and forums online. This is an experience that cannot be replicated by brick and mortar travel agencies. Revenue model: Travolteer.com does not charge users in general who visits the site. Instead we generate our revenue from hosting organization and businesses such as hotels, flight and rental affiliates through the following: 1. Escrow system (80%) 2. Affiliate model (15%) 3. Advertising revenue model (5%) We are seeking for seed funding of USD$50,000 which will provide users with the necessary web app to host voluntourism activities and data.

Hi Mr Saleem,

First of all thank you for your keen interest in this project of ours. As you might or might not know Travolteer is an online guide that helps people find volunteering recommended destinations based on the informed opinions and reviews of a community of avid volunteers.

Yes, you are right when you say one of the biggest challenges is market penetration. In fact im sure many community-based review website would have went through the same issue. Our strategy in tackling this is by segmenting our target market into smaller segments. By targeting into networks where we have a stronger link such as the Asean University Network where it will allow us to target students around the ASEAN and promote the idea of voluntourism with them. Thats pretty much the first phase of penetrating strategies we are looking forward to implementing.

However up to this point we have tried and tested the idea in offline mode and the experience is good enough to proceed towards online. Hence through competitions like ysec it provides us valuable validation of the idea with other users and help us build network with potential investors like yourself. We look forward to sharing more of Travolteer to you. Thank you for your interest.

Hi Syazwani,

This is a very interesting concept, a lot of people have attempted this type of a project before, but few have succeeded. The biggest challenge has always been a an effective market penetration strategy: how to get users on board.

I would be interested in learning more about your operations and logistics. If the opportunity presents itself, my company would be keen on supporting your project by investing in your technology needs and help you create a market place.
