NATURAL FIBER AND LOW ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT SHOES AND ACCESSORIES FROM COLOMBIA
Published on July 3, 2014 um 13:11
Summary of your idea
The idea is to create fine low environmental shoes by using natural fiber materials and reducing the usage of complex polymers and dyed leather. By using this natural fibers as pineapple , yute and cañaflecha fiber, the shoe manufacturing environmental impact could be reduced taking into account that the dying process for leathers is one of the most contaminating industrial processes. Complex polymers used for soles, linings and other parts of the shoes have a long degradation time, affecting natural environments. These natural fiber are traditionally used by native and farmer communities. These communities will be included in the project as suppliers helping them to reduce poverty. In order to make these shoes wearable and successful , a new design and manufacturing process must be created. Natural fibers must be also tested and new natural materials will be add to the process. The industrial design process based on users needs will let these shoes reach the fashion, luxury and design customers.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Targets: To create a sustainable business the help communities and the environment To Reduce the environmental impact of the shoe manufacturing industry by avoiding the usage of dyed leathers and complex polymers To Create new fine and luxury designs , including at least 50% of natural fibers To help Native and Farmer communities that use natural fibers as a mean of subsistence by giving them the opportunity to create and manufacture the fibers that are going to be used in the products. Measures Success of the design process and materials will be determined by specialized tests (users tests and lab tests) Success of the design concept will be evaluated by the amount of orders placed by customers after showing the samples. Our goal is to receive at least a 100 pairs order Success of the environmental impact will be determine by specialized tests which will determine the real environmental impact of a finished shoe. These results will be compared with the regular leather shoes Success of the social element will be evaluated through the creation of production clusters in native and farmer communities. The creation of at least 50 new jobs in these communities is our goal.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The business has been though as a regular manufacturing company. the design will be provided by me and a design team. The manufacturing process will be made by the company but the natural fiber process will be made by the native and farmer communities. For this purposed, outsourcing contracts will be signed. In order to make this business sustainable, A marketing strategy will be design including national and international leather shows and investment requests to local governments. This is a personal idea. no collaborators are included in this stage. (planning and star up stage) The financing source until this point has been personal and family savings.
My name is Andrés Robiel González. I´m a final semester student at the UNIVERSIDAD INDUSTRIAL DE SANTANDER in Bucaramanga, Colombia, South America. I´m also and English teacher. i´m 30 years old. I worked for a shoe company for 2 years as an Industrial Designer and Interpreter. I had the opportunity to learn a lot about these industry and all its strengths and weaknesses. I realized that the environmental impact is one of the most important aspects that must be changed in order to reduce contamination. I started thinking about a way to reduce the environmental impact in shoes by using new materials and processes. I have sent many projects to many contests in design but unfortunately I have not received any prize or awards until now ( My projects have been selected but never won the main award). Nevertheless, there are two projects that are now in contests and two are being tested in order to be produced. I studied design because I wanted to help my community and my country by designing global positive impact products. i really believe that designing accurate products could make a world better. Design is not only about profit, is about helping humanity to live better, respecting the environment and helping those that have limitations.
