App Fish: Know-choose-consume
Published on July 3, 2014 um 15:34
Summary of your idea
Is necessary develop actions to protect endangered biodiversity and ensure its use in a sustainable and responsible way; in the specific case of ornamental fish and fish consumption, in Colombia, there is a considerable number of species in danger of extinction because of overexploitation, deterioration of ecosystems and consumer misinformation that do not let them choose the best option. In turn there is inequity in this market chain, since economic benefits received by first actors of the chain (fishers) do not compensate their effort. Considering this situation, arose the idea of the app, which pretends, mainly, offer info that let consumers analyze more criterias and choose better fish that do not produce negative impacts over ecosystems, let them know the conditions of several fish species , social aspects around ornamental fish and fish consumption, even offer them ways to prepare fish to eat (recipes- nutrition). Objectives - Reduce the consumption of fish species endangered - Increase trade (fair and sustainable) along the market chain of ornamentals fish and consumption, promoting fishers associations of vulnerable populations who have exploit sustainably the fishery resource - Give info about available fish species in different regions, their conditions (informed consumer) Activities 1) Compilation of info to the app (biological data, geographic, social, culinary) 2) Design 3) Graphical and visual edition 4) Association with operators (Android, Blackberry, etc) Innovation: 4 informative approaches ( environment- Nutrition - fishing communities market) - Inventory of species by region (condition, size, calendar) - Substitute species because of endangered - Recipes with fish - Fish (ornamental and consumption) come from vulnerable fisher communities - List of companies and restaurants recommended for buy fish. Finally this is the first app about ornamental fish in Colombia, important aspect since the country is the second exporter of this kind of fish in Latinamerica.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
This idea has positive impact in different aspects that involve and are necessary to achieve a sustainable development of ornamental fishing and consumer one. About social, the idea takes into account fishing communities, in Colombia generally are vulnerable population (afro and indigenous), located in isolated areas, who develop the fishing activity, app promotes the marketing of fish that come from this communities and economically benefit them, but they have to do the activity in a sustainable way. With the app we consider both fishing in natural environment and bred in captivity, promotes them only if those are sustainable, therefore one of the impact of the idea is protect fish suppliers ecosystems, do not get endanger the biodiversity and the main livelihood of many vulnerable population in the country. A way to track the impacts of the app is measure the number of users of the app, the percentage of fish species (ornamental and consumption) endangered and increase in fish consumption in Colombian homes.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The financing will be done through application of payments between different advertising agencies interested in having their ads appear in the application and are recommended by us as places where the responsible consumption of fish is practiced; eg restaurants where seafood and great fishing chains generally, so that will improve their good name and so we pay for being recommended and sold publicized. Similarly we can work hand in hand with FAO and other fishing entities of Colombia, in order to make the application more contained in the country and is taken as the main reference for consulting threatened species. On the other hand you should also evaluate the possibility that for every person who downloads the application will donate a small percentage to indigenous communities engaged artisanal fisheries consumption and ornamental.
This idea is designed by Lina Maria Ricaurte Torres (22 years old) and Julieth Paola Cubillos Tovar (23 years old), we have a bachelor's degree in environmental management at Distrital University in Bogota- Colombia; and we are members of the research group PECSA, in the same University, working the research lines of sustainable fishing and environmental policy. I, Julieth Cubillos, was the student leader of PECSA between April 2012 until November 2013 and I got my bachelors degree with the research project: Guidelines for sustainable management of ornamental fishing in Inirida, Guainia (Colombia). Also I was research unit's monitor of Faculty of environment and natural resource for 2 years (2012 and 2013). I had the opportunity to participate in the events: - United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio + 20) In Brasil, making the presentation Green economy, sustainable development from a perspective of youth, - VI Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia (April, 2012), I was linked in the group of Natural Disaster, where we built the youth's proposal about this issue and we presented it to governments of countries in America. - III Latin American Forum on Sustainable Development in Argentina, making the presentation of my research project about sustainable fishing. Those were important experiences that helped me to design this idea, learn new knowledge and projects, meet interesting people and also joined me to networks like Colombian Network of research groups (REDCOLSI) and World Youth Alliance Latin America (WYA), currently I am member of both. I am very excited with the participation in the Youth Citizen Entrepreneurship Competition, because is a great opportunity to share our idea, see the people reaction about the app, meet young from different countries in the world committed with the environment, learn and teach about fishing conditions in Colombia.
