Biogas for Sustainable Energy in Desa Ciporeat

Summary of your idea

Our idea is about to bulid sustainable energy through biogas technology in Ciporeat village, West Java, Indonesia. Ciporeat village is a one dairy village inhabited by more than 1000 cows. 1 cow could produce up to 25 kg of cow dung, therefore 1000 cows could produce up to 25.000 L of biogas that is equivalent with 3750 3kg LPG storages in daily production. Unfortunately, they have no idea on how to manage those cow dung, so these cow dung will leads into environmental problem, disrupts the sanitation, irigation system, and so on. The next problem came from energy side, Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) is the most common cooking fuel that used in Ciporeat, but the availability of LPG is very limited because LPG is one of non-renewable energy and the amount is limited. Because the lack of LPG availability, it leads to increasing the price of LPG. This will be big problem to low class villagers to fulfill their cooking fuel necessary. The third problem is there are lot of young generation in Ciporeat who have not got the job yet, so they are still unemployed, and this is the big problem because as youth, they have to be productive and give financial support for their family. So our solution is to utilize waste which is cow dungs into some thing more valuable which is biogas. We will build and refunctionate the broken biogas reactor, and we will make partnership with cow owner, and unempolyed youth to run this social business. Those unemployed youth will bo coached by us about how to process cow waste into biogas, how to maintanance the reactor, and how to run sociall business. Biogas will become new cooking fuel resource which its price is more cheaper and high avalibality.

Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development

1. Economical Impact LPG cost that is sold in Ciporeat is now in the range of price of 19.000-20.000 IDR for 2 weeks usage. With the same length of usage, our biogas will be charged only for 12.000 IDR. For 1 month, 1 family will spend about Rp 40.000 to buy LPG. Meanwhile when family using biogas, they only have to spend about Rp 20.000 to fulfill cooking fuel for 1 month. Therefore by using biogas, family can save about Rp 20.000, and this number is considered as big number for low class people. 2. Health Environment Impact Biogas technology is a process to utilize waste, cow dung, to become fuel through fermentation in reactor. Establishing biogas technology will be solution to waste management problem in Ciporeat. Dairy farmer will realize that they should utilize cow dung instead of throwing it to anyewhere unappropriate which will leads into health environmental problem. Therefore bad things like contaminating sanitation system, contaminating irigation system will not happens anymore as long as dairy farmer utilize the cow dung into something worth. 3. Social Impact Using biogas also build new mindset to always utilizing waste into someting worth. We will show the way we can add the no value thing, like cow dung, into something useful as cooking fuel biogas. So, they wont throw the wastes into anywhere which makes some problem. Beside of those social impact that can be given by through this project, the another impact is building villagers mindset to make new job through becoming entrepreneur and independent people. As we know that availability of jobs is not same with the number of job seekers. So there is a lot of people who get no job. Becoming entrepreneur can make new job and make the unemployed youth earn job.

Plans for implementation and sustainability

For planning and executing this social-business project, we will collaborate with several parties that will help us achieving the goals of the project. 1. Youth Group Youth group in Ciporeat village will play role to run this social business 2. Land owner An individual who rent their land to be our biogas reactor plant location. The benefit that they would get is free biogas as long as the rent their land for our production plant. 3. Cow owner An individual who become our cow dung supplier. The benefit that they would get is free biogas as long as the supply their cow dung waste to us. 4. HIMATEK ITB A non-for-profit chemical engineering of ITB student run organization that is willing to do voluntary guiding the Youth Group to convert cow dung waste to biogas that has more economical value So this project will be funded by resolution project and ITB Student union Distribution policy: a. Door distribution Our team would distribute and transport the products until their very front door. This type of transportation benefit is only available for those who are becoming our resident and loyal buyers. We define resident buyer as those who ordered our product for minimum 4 periods of using. We would deliver the product as agreement that is conducted in the begining of order. b. Take away This type of distribution is conducted for those who did not order or 4 period package. Therefore, the transaction is done in our official store and the buyer should bring the biogas reactor home by him or herself. We will also establish a grand launching in the village and introduce promotion ambassadors that later on would help us educate and encourage people to shift their cooking fuels from LPG to biogas

Bangkit, Dzaky, Firra, Nadia, and Nursyifa are a team and consists of of five ITB chemical engineerings students who attracts to social entrepreneurships stuff. We realize that social enterpreneurs play the role as the agent of change and engage in the process of continuous innovation, adaptation, and learning. We believe that we can make a change to give a positive impact for society. We could be interpreted as a group that consist of five youths with strong broad-minded and forward-looking character. We also have the perseverance to accomplish a goal, regardless of insurmountable obstacles. We make timely and appropriate changes in our thinking and plans of new better ideas and solutions to problems by being innovative on social and business development. Our vision is how to giving positive influence for people around by being an enterpreneur and implementing valuable knowledge that we have got as chemical engineering students. So, Why we are a strong candidate to win? Our project is biogas business and as we know that this project is related with our major field, chemical engineering. Since the all of member team came from chemical engineering major, so we are the most suitable person to do this project. We know that our project makes a great impact and possitive influence for our community targets. We believe that our knowledge in chemical process can be implemented properly in this project. Winning this event is one of our biggest dream that will make a big change for us and our project targets. The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dream. And our dream is bringing Ciporeat forward to increase their welfare and decrease their economy, enviromental, and financial problems.
