Summary of your idea

Tamarisk is an invasive shrub/tree that has decimated riparian habitats in the Western United States. My idea is to put this resource to use and restore the natural habitat. There are many different opportunities that could be explored to utilize the hectares upon hectares of tamarisk that grow in this part of the US. These could range from construction to industrial to many other uses. By harvesting this resource, the chance exists to heal ecosystems that have been completely destroyed by this unwelcome invader. Furthermore, finding a commercial use for tamarisk means the creation of job opportunities in rural areas that tend to be more economically depressed.

Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development

The overall goal of this idea is to eliminate tamarisk from the Western United States and restore these areas to their natural habitat. Thus, when this goal has been achieved, the project will be complete. Understanding if ecosystem restoration has worked could be measured through the level of biodiversity in these areas or through similar indicators. Furthermore, the human element of this project seeks to employ people from local communities close to the tamarisk impacted areas that are economically depressed. The idea is to create a new type of industry in these areas throughout the Western United States.

Plans for implementation and sustainability

The idea will be based on a limited term, for-profit business. Financing would be sought from a range of potential investment sources, including private investors and the federal, state, and local governments of the United States. The various levels of government in the United States could be potential collaborators as well as universities and research institutes looking into this issue.

Your profile

Having grown up in the Western United States, I've seen firsthand the havoc the invasion of this plant has wreaked on fragile riparian ecosystems throughout this part of the United States. Therefore, my commitment to seeing this idea through is strong because this fight is personal for me. After 29 years on this planet, I am ready to tackle a problem that is much bigger than me, but one where I see I could really have an impact. I believe my business education and experience, but most importantly my sheer determination, will allow me to see this idea through to completion.
