Summary of your idea
The disposable plastic bottle usages for drinking water making the number of plastic bottle trashes keep increasing everyday. While a lot of students and daily workers need everyday supply of drinking water, They are forced to bought bottled water because in Indonesia, tap water cannot be used for drinking water. I saw they are still a large number of people willing to bring their own tumbler or reusable bottle, but they were not facilitated well to fill their bottle when it is running out of drinking water to drink in public places. Our idea is to provide self-service public automatic water dispenser, that will be provide drinking water in cheap price to refill the tumbler or reusable bottles in public space like campuses and offices. With cooperation with trusted local drinking water companies, the vending machine will sell the water in volume-based refill. Each 600 ml of refill will be cost about Rp500 or US$0.05. It is a lot cheaper that buying the same bottle of water which cost Rp2500. The main objective is to reduce the plastic bottle usage. The operational will be run by professional staff in cleaning and changing the water gallons to the pump. The development now is on financial calculation and expected this system will be installed in 10 spots in strategic public places e.g. canteens and restaurants. The net profit for the 10 units are expected to be US$ 350 per month, and break even points (BEP) duration is 7 years.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
My market targets are the regular office workers, students and employee who everyday feel they actually do not need to buy bottled water. It is polluting and high cost. With out system, I expect to significantly reduce the amount of use of disposable bottled water in campuses and offices area. This is good for environment protection and also reduce the cost that happening before when the employee need to fill their bottle with drinking water. this project will be a massive success if the campuses, offices is able to see this innovative ideas as their alternative and start to reduce the plastic bottle usage. Support from government by letting me in the goverment offices and promoting my system is greatly appreciated.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
I planned to implement 10 stations of this system throughout entire Surabaya, Indonesia. It will be located in campuses, offices and public spot. To ensure its hygiene level, proper maintenance has to be done every half hour, to check the pump and replace the water gallon that runs out of water. The biggest problems here in Indonesia that people tend to use famous brand of water bottling. Although Board of Water Supply had installed some system of self-service drinking water system, but when knowing the water is came from public water supply, that they think is not hygiene and make them sick. So in early stage, we will cooperate with local supplier of water to bought their water gallons in mass number and install it to our pump system. By doing this, we hope to gather positive response from customers and in the future, we will install it on every public spaces in entire city and to lower the cost, we also expect to produce our own brand of water, specifically designed to be cheap and reusable bottle purpose. I will lower down the cost significantly and expand the market.

I am very determined person who always work hard to achieve my goals. I always look for new opportunities to improve myself in technical, management and interpersonal skills. This desire led me to start practicing application in green energy field by doing researches for science competitions and leading a project team who created wind-powered cooling box to help fisherman store the fish and designed a solar heater-powered absorption air conditioner to help reduce energy usage on buildings. Other than technical skills, I also take active participation in student organization and technological conferences, which gave me experience to practice public speaking and improves my decision making, communication and responsibility. On the international stage, I represented Indonesia for U.S. Government Scholarship, Study of the U.S. Institute for Student Leaders on Global Environmental Issues (SUSI) that held by U.S. Department of State as one of Indonesias future environmental leader. This experience I got in U.S. motivated me to contribute in environmental movement and renewable energy.
