Alternative Energy a solution to many.

Summary of your idea
Poverty reduction and preservation of the environment are two major issues crippling Africa as a whole. Mostly these two issues are handled separately by most, but this project acts as a solution to both problems combined. My proposed project is the production of briquettes. A Briquette (or briquet) is a block of flammable matter used as fuel to start and maintain a fire. They are an environmentally friendly alternative to the commonly/widely used charcoal. Common types of briquettes are charcoal briquettes (sawdust, wax, chaff etc.) and biomass briquettes. This project would target woman in their productive age that are likely to be exploited because of their economic vulnerability. By producing these briquettes, we create a source of livelihood for these women, empowering them while saving the environment in the process.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Zambia is a farming nation with over 60% of the population depending on it for revenue. With the shortage in land and scare income for capital there is need to find other sources of livelihood in rural communities other than farming. This project would act as a source of employment and income to these women. As the program grows more would be employed reducing the level of poverty in these communities. The recipients would have access to an environmentally friendly source of energy which due to its nature of production, is more cost efficient. This would leave them with some disposable income to invest or utilize for other necessities.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
Select strategic women of the targeted community and have them trained on the production of briquettes. A sub-branch of government called the TDAU carries out free training on the production of briquettes if a group of five or more are interested. After training, start production on the farm to be used as production base. During training, these women would be sensitized on the efficiency (money wise) and the overall impact on the environment. With their clear understanding, they would in turn advocate for the cause to their colleagues. The spread in usage would mean constant need for production and expansion of the venture. It is estimated that we should start expecting sustainable returns within 8 months. Please keep in mind, this community would be used as a trial period with the hope of expansion to similar communities.
I am a 24 year old Zambian female currently holding a Bachelor of Arts degree in Development Studies and sociology. I am currently working for VSO-Voluntary Services Overseas ( a British International NGO) as a Program Support Officer. When I was 12 I visited the UK for the first time. I was amazed and impressed by what I saw. I however, was missing home after a week of getting there. That was the moment that I realized I want to be fully involved in development work. I want the development I saw there to come to my country, only after I went to university did I realize there are a lot of aspects to development. I decided to focus my attention on issues concerning women and the environment. These are the two areas I am truly passionate about and this project will help me start fulfilling my destiny and goal of being a leader for change.
