Summary of your idea
My idea is to sponsor teenage mothers who were not able to complete school; due to early pregnancy, through technical skills training according to their interests and later support them in business start ups so that they can be sustainable. The support to start businesses is in terms of a loan with an interest that will bring in a return to the project. The loan is repaid within a one year period. The teenage mothers are also taken through counselling sessions and trained as teenage pregnancy prevention advocates to help reduce the high rates of teenage pregnancies. My main objective is to enhance financial independence among the young women to be able to provide basic needs to their children and reverse the vicious cycle of poverty.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
My target is to sponsor 10 girls per year to complete a technical skills training and start their own businesses. The impact of the project will be measured in terms of the number of girls who complete the technical training, number of girls who start their own successful businesses, number of girls who find employment elsewhere, and the change in living standards for the girls and their families after the training and increase in income. This impact is scalable because the project will focus on one province at a time. The ten teenage mothers who will be supported per year will be recruited from one province and in the next year, we shall focus on a different province and maybe increase the number of girls supported, depending on the availability of funding. Since Kenya has eight provinces, we hope that by the end of eight years, we shall have impacted over 80 girls in being financially independent.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The project will be started through a small amount of finance that will be sourced from various areas such as personal savings, donations from friends and other fundraising strategies such as selling of items at a profit, and online fundraising. The girls will then be supported with small loans that they will repay at a profit to get returns from the loan amounts.
I am a social entrepreneur with a great passion for education especially for the girl child. I was brought up single-handedly by my mother after losing my father at the age of nine months. My mother, who earned a small income struggled to bring me and my brother up and when it got tough, she asked for assistance from the community and so we were generally brought up by our community. This led me to be an education ambassador for the children in my community. I have two and a half years experience in program management and thus this led me to the idea of supporting the teenage girls in my community who have dropped out of school due to early pregnancy, and have not been able to go back to school due to poverty. I am currently undertaking two courses;Impact analysis and Adaptive leadership, through +Acumen. I am hopeful that this will help improve my work with the Inua Dada Project to make it more impactful, and scalable sustainable.
