Summary of your idea
The main objective would be to set up a two-pronged medium to large sized import/export enterprise based in Lagos, Nigeria that on the one hand acts as a trading platform directly involved in the importation of high demand goods mostly agricultural produce and other critical commodities from other African countries into the Nigerian market as well as exporting highly produced Nigerian goods to the most demanding African markets. On the other hand, the enterprise shall serve as a middle man agency for other smaller sized African merchants (both organisations and individuals) who either have a commodity to export and need help identifying the most lucrative markets and buyers in other parts of the continent, or are local traders, wholesalers and retailers seeking the most suitable markets and sellers in other parts of the continent to import certain commodities from. The enterprise shall also provide other necessary market intelligence data and analysis to clients such as prices, market dynamics and shipping information. In this regard, the enterprise shall serve as both a transnational logistics organisation and a trade consulting firm for other merchants in the African continent with a long term vision of fostering sustainable trade relationships between the various African countries as well as curtailing intercontinental trade in Africa which impacts the continent economy negatively.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
It is widely believed and supported by numerous research analysis that intercontinental trade negatively impacts the trade relationships between the various African countries in particular and the African economy in general. As each African country looks to the west and other world regions for importation of its required goods and commodities most of which can be sourced within the continent, this leads to a lack of efficient working relationships between the respective African countries, a loss of revenue from the continent as money is sent to merchants in other continents to pay for these goods usually at a substantially higher rate than if bought from neighbouring African countries as well as infrastructural decay on the continent especially in its transportation, storage and logistics systems as if goods are not frequently moved between African countries, these sectors would be the hardest hit by the consequences. The long term vision of AMTS Ltd is to improve Africa by promotion sustainable regional trade between the various African countries. The enterprise would gauge its success based on volume of trade as well as number of registered clients throughout the continent in its first year of operations.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The business would rely on a steady expansion business model starting with small scale importation and exportation between Nigeria and a selected few African countries. The start-up shall be financed by a combination funds raised from a few microfinance institutions, angel investors as well as the owners own cash and personal contributions, donations, grants and loans from family. As turnover is generated, the company shall invest heavily in its human resources and business development in order to increase its presence in more African countries, increase its volume and range of commodities handled as well as launch its consultancy services by the end of its maiden year of operations. To further support this growth and expansion, additional funds shall be sought from venture capitalist/private equity firms and other high-end financial institutions operating within Africa. These institutions would be able to seek repayment either through a long-term payment plan with an agreed reasonable interest rate or through an agreed percentage of equity stake in the company. An elaborate and comprehensive business plan shall be designed for this purpose detailing all the components of the business, its strategy for growth and expansion, how this growth would be rolled out and financed as well as means of returns for investors.
