Summary of your idea
Is an Interior design code for people with visual disabilities, this one is the largest disability population in Latin America. Farther than designing accessible spaces, the intention is to manipulate the interior environment to get a positive response from people who cant see, stimulating other senses. This desing code combines smells, sounds, temperature and scale of spaces to recreate the same feeling, for which designers use the colors. Imagine that when you enter a room, you could smell it, hear it and feel it through body temperature and echos. We want to translate the meaning of colors in design to be read by the other senses. This code is not a substitute for any design recommendations for people with visual disabilities, is rather a complement to increase the sensorial experience. The main Objective is: Planning and designing interior spaces that can be perceived, for any person, whether or not they have reduced chances of receiving visual communication"
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
We understand that is everyone,in our architects labor to offer this kind of inclusive and friendly solutions for underprivileged members of our society. It is necessary to explore new solutions that go farther than technical requirements, which can enrich the sensorial experience of these people. As designers we can recreate a specified sensation in people without sight, is more than allowing transit through space, it is allowed to live them. It is a way of raising human dignity and sense of personal fulfillment of blind people and for other users is a more exciting experience where the other senses are involved.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
We performed several practical exercises with visually impaired, and we realize that it is possible to cause certain sensations through the interior spaces, if we stimulate the other senses. We managed to mitigate the sense of desolation that is normally felt by people with visual disabilities to reach new areas and increase the sensory experience of other users. The cost of implementation is very economical, it only takes one music player, one smell dispenser and adjust the air conditioning temp. We propose to use the design code on public services buildings, especially those who work directly with people with visual disabilities.
We are two architects from Dominican Republic, Adis Ozuna and Nathalia Garcia. We started this exciting project as a requirement to complete our master's degree in architectural design. We didnt expect that would be so exciting and rewarding to contribute for the inclusion of people who are not treated equally, especially in our country. We are two sensitive women who wants to share this amazing approach, that is a little thing to many people; but will change the whole world of some people.
