Indigenious Organic Rugs

Summary of your idea

I plan to preserve, safeguard and promote the indigenous art of Farasi or organic rugs making through women entrepreneurship, skills training and market linkages. Farasi making is as synonymous with the Maheri community as camel herding. These people have been marginalized and secluded from the mainstream society. The women of Maheri community have been practicing the art of Farasi for centuries and traditionally. At present there are only few elderly women left in the target village Bijari Sharif that are expert in this art whereas the younger lot have stopped practicing it.

Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development

300 well training women and girls will be available in the village which will be working on Farasi development keeping in view the market demands and will be supporting to their families. A group of women master trainers would be available that would be busy in the training of new learners. A Well equipped Skills Development Center will be available in the village which will be continually used for the capacity building of the women. A training manual in Sindhi language with pictorial format will be available which could be replicated in the other villages also.

Plans for implementation and sustainability

Selection of the area, objectives, activities and implementation strategy of the project have been conceptualized in such a way that the project could be effectively implemented to enable the target artisan keep continue the work and find other funding for the scale up of the concept. The CCB of the artisan will start working on resource generation for further continuation of the work. A proposal will be submitted to District Government by this CCB. Along with this the related government departments/ programs will be contacted also.
