Summary of your idea

Recyward aims to increase the rate of recycling of plastic, glass, aluminium, and paper. Based on the idea of gamification, recyward will reward recycling through the introduction of points, which could be exchanged with various offers, tree plantation, donations etc. Rewards will be provided by companies affiliated with recyward. In this way: a) companies will 'advertise' themselves at a lower cost, and reduce their carbon footprint; b) individuals will be more motivated to recycle. Recyward will forge an environmental consciousness to individuals, especially youngsters, and assist the environment. It will be a win-win situation for the society as a whole.

Plans for implementation and sustainability

These points will be exchangeable with offers, services, donations, tree plantation etc. Collection methods of the recycled material will vary, depending on the existing recycling methods in every region. After the collection, the material will be sent to process. Financing Sources and Collaborations: European Union funding Programmes and collaborative partnerships. Initially the idea can be implemented in the University of Cyprus, where students who recycle paper can be rewarded with free paper for printing.

Your profile

We are three friends aged 23, all undergrads at the University of Cyprus studying Business Administration, Philosophy, and Accounting respectively. Despite the 'gloomy' situation that surrounds us due to the economic recession, we strongly believe that we can still make this world a better place, if only we are proactive and optimistic, and do not procrastinate. Given that we are all avid gamers, we think that if we 'gamify' the recycling process and apply to it some of the principles that underpin videogames, individuals will be motivated to actively contribute to recycling and feel more 'engaged' with this activity.
